For a metro of about 700,000, Des Moines has a surprisingly large skyline. New high rises are going up including a new cinema complex. The city keeps growing... people obviously want to move here; surprising for a cold weather city. Catch an I Cub AAA game you’lllove it!

A s a native of Des Moines, I would like to correct the origin of the name of the river and city. The French explorers along the upper Mississippi River discovered a tributary along which lived a small tribe called the Moyens. The river was named Riviere des Moyens which later became Moines. The latter means monks in French, hence the confusion.

    rural interstates, 75/night: 70.
    divided US highways 70/night: 65.
    2-lane US roads 65/night: 60
    2-lane state roads 60/night: 55 I propose those limits for 2021.

There is definitely the potential of becoming a great city and I hope for the best, however strong leadership, cooperation, the courage to do the right things, and a new vision and goal would be required. Much to my chagrin, I do not see any pedestrians, city dwellers, shops, cinemas, theatres, cafés, buses, trams, or restaurants which make a city centre come alive. I see only wide roads, cars, parking structures, car parks, and empty lots. Is there anything left of the old Des Moines? From this video, I gather that the city has very little soul. I hope that architects, city planners, and new urbanists can come together to recreate this city.

I live downtown and it’s never this empty usually during the day. But at night all the bars and colored nights turn on and crowds of people are walking in the street with cops everywhere and music playing and it’s very crowded with stop and go traffic past 10 pm on Friday through Saturday. I dident expect it when I moved here i thought it would be a quiet place much shown in this video but when the sun went down my first night I was surprised on how many people actually lived here and how crazy it can get at night.

Marcel Moulin, I agree wholeheartedly with your comments, and I as a resident have found the city center to having been redesigned to accommodate 1.) the increasing multitude of large insurance company offices workers, and others, who commute in and out from the outlying neighborhoods and suburbs by car, thus the traffic patterns and one-way streets that funnel the traffic in and out, even though some of the wide avenues that once had trolly cars running up and down the center of them, and not to mention the $$ parking meters 2.) the night-lifer's that come to drink and eat and party in the entertainment districts. 3.) The Saturday Morning Farmers Market which is huge. 4.) The large fairs, festivals and exhibitions that occasionally take place in various districts, such and PapaJohn Park, East Village, Civic Center, Convention Center & Arena). The lack of warm ambiance and convenient amenities and the banishment of major retail, and in addition the lack of easy mobility by car around downtown for the growing residents and visitors. Thus as you stated there is a lack of soul and I will add to that - heart. Please read the more detailed (and lengthy) comments that I have posted recently.

At least make it 60 for daytime, and on the interstates, at least make it 75 for daytime and keep the current 70 limit for night time driving. Try it!
    My proposal.

JCPenny is now a Courtnouse annex. The downtown mall is a shell if its old self, but that was located in a newer building, not old. Most of the downtown retail is located further east now....other side of the river closer to the Capitol Building. It is called the East Village.

They're called sky walks, and they have nothing to do with laziness. Do you think it takes less energy to walk from one building to the next in a sky walk than it does on a sidewalk? The winters are very cold in Iowa. Sky walks allow you to walk several blocks without opening or closing doors. You don't have to stand shivering, waiting for a traffic signal to let you cross the street. You don't even need to put on a coat.

As a resident I must say that this video is a stark, dry and sterile view of the downtown, it seems to me to be just a rambling unedited drive around (and around and around) downtown, yes often diving in circles over the same streets and missing some interesting ones entirely. The video is pointless and too long. Narration and background music needed badly. It is a dreadful rendering of downtown that must have been filmed on a Sunday morning, where midwest tranquility and the church-going public render downtown a very quiet, vacant place. Usually, there is heavy traffic on the streets and lots of pedestrians on the sidewalks and overhead skywalks. By using only the stationary dash camera pointing straight ahead the camera operator missed a lot of what was just off to the left and right and above. Some of the side streets are the best. I want to stop here to note that there are also negative things that would be unseen to any camera such as; the old city retail district which has been gutted, including its grand department store that burned down just a few years ago. Only one supermarket is currently present and in operation even though lots and lots of residential dwellings have been recently, and are continuing to being, added to downtown. All of the great old theater palaces, and there was a row of them, have been demolished to make way for more office towers and parking lots and the like. Additional negative elements that may not be noticed, there are very inconvenient one-way streets and prolific numbers of money-sucking 24/7 parking meters ever throughout the city downtown. The trolley car system was shut down and ripped out many years ago and even though there was a feasibility study conducted a little over 10 years ago that was very favorable to building a new system especially with the great increase of density in center city and the expansion westward, eastward and northward of the urban sprawl with ever-increasing automobile traffic, yet there has been no visible action taken - (take note of the many parking buildings all over downtown). On the busy summer nights when the many outdoor activities and events all around downtown such as festivals, concerts, baseball games, block parties take place it is very difficult to find available parking spaces, and the parking lot prices skyrocket. Okay, now some Positive things to note: at the 18:05 minute point in the video, Court Street District, with the quaint side streets (unseen), where there is booming nightlife at the many restaurants and bars especially in the evenings and on weekends. Then starting at minute 20:00 and again at 30:00 you will see just a glimpse of the historic and recently restored and ever-expanding "East Village" on the east side of the Des Moines River, with many quaint shops, restaurants, night clubs, hotels, chic and desirable urban residential housing, where many enjoy walking the inviting neighborhood, and the nightlife is bustling. Missing entirely from the video are scenes of the Des Moines River which flows through downtown with many beautiful bridges, the River Walk, Skating Rink, the Riverside Amphitheater, the Botanical Gardens, and the very serene and beautiful Japanese Garden. Also absent from the video are the Baseball Stadium, the Historic Sherman Hill District with the beautiful 19th century Victorian Mansions, classic old-world style apartment buildings, and the historic and lovely Hoyt Sherman Theater a premier entertainment and cultural venue. So, after viewing this disappointing and vapid video I am motivated to make a video that will capture the truth and essence of this growing downtown in a living and dynamic way... watch for it.

The bulk of downtown is filled with Insurance and financial businesses. This was filmed on a Sunday, so the downtown area is very slow.
There are areas immediately south and east of Downtown that have more places to eat and shop, and those places are much busier on a Sunday.
