You will start your walk at Race Street Pier, a public park that offers stunning views of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, the first major bridge built across the Delaware River. The bridge connects Philadelphia with Camden, New Jersey, and was opened in 1926. It is a National Historic Landmark and a symbol of the city's engineering prowess.
As you walk south along the Delaware River Waterfront, you will see the Pier 3 Marina, where you can admire the boats and yachts docked there. The waterfront is a popular destination for recreational, cultural, and leisure activities for the residents and visitors of Philadelphia. It has undergone several transformations over the years, from a bustling port in the colonial era, to a neglected industrial area in the mid-twentieth century, to a revitalized urban space in the twenty-first century.
You will continue walking past the Independence Seaport Museum, which preserves and interprets the maritime history of Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley. The museum features exhibits, artifacts, and interactive displays that tell the stories of the people, events, and innovations that shaped the region's waterways. You will also see two historic ships that are part of the museum: the USS Olympia, a cruiser that served in the Spanish-American War and World War I, and the USS Becuna, a submarine that served in World War II and the Cold War.
You will finish your walk by returning north through Penn's Landing, a 35-acre redevelopment site that was named after William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania. Penn's Landing is home to many attractions, events, and festivals throughout the year, such as concerts, fireworks, ice skating, and more. You will cross to walk into Philly along Market Street, one of the main thoroughfares of the city. Market Street is lined with bars, restaurants, shops, and landmarks, such as Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were signed.
