    Calling it super simple is a little bit of a disservice, the badges do give it a high degree of flexibility and there's quite a few different enemy types that force you to use more than one attack. A lot of RPGs have the problem of "just use the same attack over and over" which this game doesn't since there's spiky, flying, no-touch, high-defense and ceiling enemies to make sure that you have to use all of mario's moves, different partners and sometimes items and yet thanks to the badge system there's plenty of room for different strategies. The only thing that's simplified is the actual damage numbers and honestly, that's genius too since super huge numbers can get confusing easily and this game shows that they're not necessary to have satisfying progression, I'd even argue it makes it more satisfying when your attack goes from 2 to 4 than from 32427 to 37782 or something.

      The badges allow for so much too. Superguarding is a great mechanic because it can make challenge runs that would be impossible using PM64's mechanics possible, and stylish moves on top of it is a great way to reward experienced players as well in a way that still makes the game fun to begin with (providing additional action commands). It is simple as its core, but really a joy for experienced players as well. The Pit of 100 Trials add so much to the game when it comes to fully experiencing the combat system's strengths, imo.

    Also a last comment:
    While TTYD is excellent for beginners it has some things for advanced players too.

    "The battle mechanics aren't complex in the slightest"
    -Basic Attack/Defense style damage
    -Flower Points for more powerful moves
    -Unique action command timings for EVERY attack
    -Unique and often multiple stylish timings for EVERY attack
    -Immensely deep badge system allowing for multiple builds
    -Star Power moves that rely on the audience to recharge
    -Audience size increases as you level
    -Partners all have unique attacks
    -Enemies are able to be in 3 areas, ceiling, air, ground which only certain attacks can hit
    -Stage hazards
    -19 different status effects
    -Guards/Superguards for choosing between less damage and not risky vs. no damage and more risky
    -Multitudes of items available to be used by both the player and enemies
    -Rotating whether Mario attacks first or second
    -Audience can throw items which can be helpful or hinder you
    I'm gonna go out on a limb and say TTYD's battle mechanics are a TAD more complex than lining some guys up

    Late to the video, but I find it kind of hilarious and also ridiculous just how the stage plays a noticeable role in the fight. The random fire blasters, shy guy coming up stage to pull a rope to drop a statue or rolling stone, and Mario even going into the audience to kick someone out just completely baffled me. Oh, and I cannot forget the seemingly random bucket that just falls onto the enemy. Is there a reason/mechanic behind that(I’ve never played The Thousand Year Door)?

    • @patrickshaw411
      @patrickshaw411 5 месяцев назад +2

      They never really address it in the game’s lore. Just sort of one of those unexplainable things in Mario I guess. The audience is also the main way you receive star power, which is for your special moves. There are certainly mechanics for the stage, but I’ve never felt like it was a necessary part of the combat. Its more supplemental than anything. Hard core RPG fans might be put off by it, but Mario RPGs were never very hardcore, even in the early days.

    • @devonm042690
      @devonm042690 5 месяцев назад

      Actions that shake the stage have a chance of causing a prop to fall. If a prop falls, the game pops a random integer and then references a table to determine what prop falls. There are some _really_ out there ones too. Not sure if any of them are specific to certain areas/stage backgrounds, but I know it's possible to have a meteor fall on someone.
      The audience members you can kick out can be either hecklers or fans. Hecklers will hold up objects to throw at Mario that deal damage and they each have triggers (for example if there's a Hammer Bro in the audience, it will heckle Mario with a hammer if Mario flubs the action command of a Hammer action). Fans will hold up items to throw at Mario that he will add to his inventory when thrown. Kick out the hecklers, but don't be too trigger happy with that X button, or else you might kick out a fan. Other audience members leave as well if you do that, and I wouldn't be surprised if there's a rare heckler trigger like that.

    This game is probably one of my top 10 video games of all time. The combat is so fun, and some of the situations and set pieces you will come across are actually incredible. Seeing how you are so early in the game, I have to say that the best is yet to come. With each new chapter and new companion, and new abilities, the world opens up and there is just so much to find and discover.
    Something of note I guess in relation to the writing is the incredible pacing of the game and how fresh each new location is. Every chapter feels like a different genre almost with one being a classic rpg tale of castles and dragons, and another being a wrestling tournament arc. One chapter takes you on a swashbuckling adventure with pirates, while the next has you being a detective in a murder mystery of sorts. There's something for everyone and I know that if you've enjoyed it thus far, you will love what comes next.
    Despite its simplicity, there are some advanced techniques and mechanics that make the game feel more complex. In your footage I noticed you didn't really make use of stylish moves, which adds another layer of complexity and "risk and reward" to the combat, especially when the reward is more star power for your special moves.
    Even though I played this game so much when I was a kid, it is still so hard for me to put the controller down, telling myself things like, "just one more level up," or "just get to the next chapter." I really hope Nintendo and Intelligent Systems bring the Paper Mario series back to these rpg roots and we get a proper follow up to TTYD. The quality of this remake is incredible, especially in the music department. They made such amazing arrangements to the themes, and even let you experience the classic songs in their original style if you so wish. Though not perfect, I can say it has been one of the best remakes in recent years.

    Yeah, I had a similar experience with the game. I grew up with Super Paper Mario, and I never fully understood the old fans’ complaints about the game until I played this one. I’m a bit over halfway through the game, and TTYD really is as good as everyone says it is. I can really feel everything that the series lost when it stopped being an RPG with wonderful characters- this writing and production team is wasted on modern paper Mario, with all of its arbitrary limitations.
    Old Paper Mario was ‘storybook’ themed. The plot revolved around epic adventures with original characters. Modern paper Mario is ‘Papercraft’ themed, and the plot revolves entirely around that gimmick.

      Glad you love it! You can see why the game is absolute masterpiece among us diehard fans. The reasons that Sticker Star and Color Splash aren't as beloved because to us, their gameplays and stories are such a downgrade from any of Mario RPG classics that we wouldn't dare touch anything like them again. Nintendo may have some neat ideas here and there, but the executions have been sorely lacking. At least Origami King is a step up in right direction with some decent silly fun, it just still not as great though.
      With original Mario RPG and TTYD released again for Switch, hopefully Nintendo would finally make new full-fledged Mario RPG again, at least for the new next gen console.

    Everything you said about the world and partners just gets even better the further you get into the game. Chapters 3 and 6 are some of the most unique I've ever seen in a video game, and the chapter 4 partner is one of my favorite of all time.
    As somebody who's been playing the game for almost 20 years, it's exciting to see new people experiencing and reviewing the game for the first time.
    Final note: despite being a "purist," I disagree that the increase in paper aesthetics to various designs is a bad thing. The complaint with the paper visuals in the later games in the series was that it was immersion-breaking because it wasn't about a story that had a particular art direction; it was now a paper world unto itself. The games are at their best when they flirt with the paper aspects but don't lean on them as a crutch.

Being able to re-spec your character so easily that you could pretty much bring a different strategy to every major fight just to try out new stuff was practically unheard of back then, and it influenced everything from spiritual successors like Bug Fables and Born of Bread to games with completely different genres like the charm system in Hollow Knight.

And I can run 60 with a mod (many games can unlock 60 without a mod if FPS locker succeeds in unlocking) but I just do 30 for battery life. It feels super smooth as is. Being turn based its just not a game where its worth sacrificing battery life to increase from 30 to 60. Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak, Wolfenstein 2, etc... these games greatly benefit from 60. Even Persona 5, despite being turn based, has much faster movement outside battle and can benefit.

    Which of the xenoblade games is your favourite?

    • @Dylonic
      @Dylonic  5 месяцев назад +1

      All three are my favorite games of all time and have changed my life in significant ways but 3 is definitely my favorite. In my opinion it takes all of the best elements from 1 and 2 and just smashes it into one amazing game. Although I think 2 has the best soundtrack, 3 just hits everything on the nail and rarely if ever misses. Only negative about the game is how it’s held back by the Switch’s lack of power. Definitely needs an upgrade on the next console

      @@Dylonic I do love them all too, although I'm more a fan of the second one, the stunning areas and great vast lands really captured my attention and made me fall in love with the franchise, and I do feel like 3 had that a little less then the first two, the areas there really felt magical and mystical and in 3 I didn't have that feeling quite as much. But gameplay wise yeah I also feel like it's the best of both games put together, they still are all three very great games though
