That's the same part of the knee that Chris Weidman used to check Anderson Silva's roundhouse kick. He wound up breaking Anderson's shin in half. I've never seen that part of the knee used offensively, though.
Cool detail, thanks. I was wondering why he was so effective without needing to hit hard. I'll have to keep this technique in mind for future reference.
@@Tom-qz8xw The reverse punch is different from the cross, it's much more powerful. The reverse punch isn't used by boxers because it requires your arm to be lower, thus leaving your face vulnerable.
I learned that low kick in Muy Thai. The force of the leg keeps going forward after the impact so the part of the leg closer to the fulcrum of the knee really digs in to the leg.
A bunch of humble warriors. I thought Japanese martial art master is like in enime. They try to test and destroy each other. But in reality is no. They very humble and respect each other. Instead of showing who’s better, they try to educate each other by sharing knowledge and philosophy.
Bill Niu what it looks like is that the kicker is striking more towards the front of the thigh with the top of the shin bone and pushing down and through. It's a heavier portion of bone being pressed into a portion of the muscle that doesn't have stability to help block it.
it's more like knee kick on your thigh. The movement is not swinging, but pushing your hip forward like Mae Geri or Hiza Geri. FYI, the pain in the video is real ;)
"below the knee" is actually still the shin. It's the top part of the shin, the biggest part. Drive it in with your body weight and it doesn't need too much force to be powerful. But BEWARE because a low kick at such close range opens you up to TAKEDOWNS which is probably the first counter the opponent would try in an MMA-style or free sparring session
In Muay Thai, that is the part you aim to block with as it is the biggest and most solid part of the shin bone. The best Muay Thai Clinch fighter, (1980's era) Dieselnoi, used that part of his leg with his forward knees, instead of bending the knee and stabbing, he would raise it and push it forward. Cool to see it used as a close ranged leg kick too, awesome stuff
In my opinion this technique has one flaw: It kind of takes away the range of the low kick. I can see that to use it you must be in the other guy's punching range, whereas with a 'classic low kick' you're at a bigger distance. So you may get caught with a counter punch on the button while on one leg...not the best situation to be in. Cheers!
Another good kick to look into is the muay thai leg kick. Instead of bouncing off with your lower shin you kick with a straighted leg. It feels like a baseball bat.

Can someone explain how he does that lead punch? It seems he's pushing off with the back leg, slides the fist forward with a lot of power cause the back leg then follows forward. But how are the shoulders positioned? Does the front foot slide forward at all? His hips do drop just slightly as he begins. And also the low kick, is it you hit with the high shin into the thigh?
I learned it in Muy Thai so I would expect everyone to know it but I don't see it used at all... The idea is that the lower part of the leg keeps going past the point of impact so that the point of impact really digs into the thigh. Very effective.
I learned it in Muy Thai. Knee up to height of impact. Kick force should be straight forward, twisting hips at the end. Impact hits with upper shin but the lower part of the leg keep moving forward so the point of impact really digs into the thigh. Very close range. Even little impact and like a push will hurt. If you hit with the end of a stick it makes a slap, hit with the middle of a stick and it digs in.

Lift your knee to at least height of impact. Throw the kick forwards. The impact hits using the top of the shin but the rest of the leg keeps going forward and that force helps the point of impact dig in further into the thigh. great for closer range than other leg kicks and very effective. Even if it ends up like a push because you are close it will still dig in and hurt.
