Really good to see you using threadlocker on those bolts. I use it on a lot of fasteners because I’ve seen so many back out on their own - usually due to heat/cold cycling like rocker studs, magneto screws, those bottom two or three head bolts on B&S engines, etc. Especially on those bolts under chainsaw clutch flywheels that back out and destroy the flywheels like this flywheel almost bought it. Phew!
I have torqued very few bolts on lawn mowers in 40 years. Never had a comeback or a problem. Just use lock tite and small hand tools. I do have torque wrenches too.
I never thought about spraying brake cleaner down into bolt holes like that or even on bolt threads, but it makes perfect sense. I always head to the wire wheel with bolts, but I may try that to see how I like it. As for blowing out any blind holes, I trust Bernoulli and blow perpendicular to the hole across the top. Less chance of getting smacked in the face with schmutz! 😉
Hester, I found your channel a week or so ago, subscribed after watching two videos, and then binge watched the rest of your content. Love the channel! Don't change a thing!
thanks for your videos , nice work i bet someone hit a low branch with the blade engage lever trying to get close under trees, you should see what happens to me on my zero turn when i get a steering arm caught😀😀😀 again thanks and God bless
I had a super 029 Stihl chain saw. The bar bolts were all the time coming loose. Or not holding the bar right. I finally last year tightened them very firmly stopping bar movement. This spring when I loosened them they both striped out. I have yet to heli-coil them.
The torque specs for the cover are 18 ft lbs or 216 in lbs. The idler pulleys can be removed, bearing dust cover taken off, bearing cleaned and greased. Remember to insert the dust covers before reinstalling.😊
I found at least four different torque specs for the valve cover bolts on this thing lol the Internet can't make up its mind sometimes. I have had hit and miss luck greasing pulleys in the past. Once the bearings/races get pitted with rust there's no option to replace them. Fortunately these ones were 10 bucks apiece
The cover I was referring to was the upper engine cover. The gasket has been discontinued by Kohler, only been able to find aftermarket. Down here on Mississippi the flat pulley are $17 and the grooved are $15 each. I agree once there to far gone just replace.
It does make a difference if the coil is mounted upside down . The coil could burn out when mounted upside down. It is designed to be mounted only one way.
The only additional thing I might do is remove that oil plug and replace it with a standard bolt type oil plug. I've probably worked on two of these and I feel like the oil plug is plastic and not as good quality as a standard bolt.
Yeah, 18 ftlbs. I was guessing something like 20-25, so not too far off. If worse comes to worst you can always just get up a chart for fastener torques and go by the spec for that particular size and grade of bolt. Right? 😉 I know - who ever does THAT?!! Actually, in this case I probably would, since that block cover is pretty large and looks kind of fragile. I’d also probably do at least two sets of torques, sneaking up on the final one gradually.
I didn't bother adding one on this machine, never a bad idea to add one however the last batch I bought almost all of them leaked so I figured why chance fate lol
So the joke I made was " I don't know what HD is but my doctor says I have 80 of them!" Which is supposed to mean the doctor said I have AD-HD and I misinterpreted it....it's a bad joke lol but I appreciate your concern 👍🏻
That blade engagement lever is the worst design of anything in human history. As I got older, it was harder & harder to work it, so I put a piece of brass drain pipe over it to make it longer, so as to get more leverage. Eventually, I got tired of fighting the stupid thing, and I just put a zip tie on the seat safety switch, so I could engage the blade while off the seat. Problem solved, at least until the Briggs compression release fails and maybe blows up the engine. The Craftsman tractors with the plastic General transmissions have 4 idler pulleys for the drive belt. The one closest to the General Transmission is only 2 inches in diameter. Just from feeling under there, it seems to last the longest. I just put a few drops of motor oil on the top of my pulleys and spun them around by hand until the oil worked its way down into the ball bearings. That will have to do for now. It looks like another hurricane might form next week in the Gulf. Just what I don't need. I'm 20 feet above sea level, north of Interstate - 12. So if I flood again, be on the look out for Noah.
I love how you are making 1 hour movies instead of 20 minute videos this is a graet way to solve boredom keep up at it i love the mower content!
Thank you! It's hard to get a feel for what people enjoy but it sounds like the consensus is longer videos are better! 👍🏻 I appreciate the feedback
Yep
It was amazing how much gunk was in the fuel. I do enjoy watching you repair the small engines. Excellent show! 👍
Thank you!👍🏻

You are too kind! Thank you! 👍🏻
Wow- You covered so much info on this video. The work you performed on this YS4500 was incredible. This just might be your best video ever. 😃👍
Thanks Scout! I put a lot of work into this one and admittedly lost motivation a few times but I think it came out great 👍🏻
You do excellent work. Thank you for sharing. I always love learning from fellow small engine mechanics.
Thank you brother! The feeling is mutual 👍🏻
We're not so different you and I! Lol just two guys trying to make a buck out of there work sheds! 😂👍🏻
@@hester781 absolutely. Just doing what we can in the shop to keep things rolling along and help friends 😎
Not to mention that both of you are on my Top Ten List! 🔧🔧🔧👍
You guys are my favorite small engine guys not only that but you are pushing out content that hasn't been really posted which im interested in
Well done Hester!!
Thanks Ray! 👍🏻
I'm disCouraged with the Kohler Courage engine, lol. Great video Hester. Really enjoy watching you work. Thanks!
I see what you did there 😂👍🏻 thank you

Just a dab'l do ya 👍🏻

Could not agree more 👍🏻
Only thing I torque is rod and head bolts, if if handy after 58 years of it and still mechanic work full time

You rock! Great video.

Thank you very much! That really means a lot to me! I'll do my best to keep up the good work 👍🏻
Long but nice work Hester and I heard what you said at 40:48 🤣🤣
Just for you 😂👍🏻
🤣👍🏼🤣
Great video!!
Thank you! 👍🏻
You can't hurt my feelings. I used to hold a flashlight for my father. Lol
😂😂
thanks for your videos , nice work
i bet someone hit a low branch with the blade engage lever trying to get close under trees, you should see what happens to me on my zero turn when i get a steering arm caught😀😀😀
again thanks and God bless
That's a good guess! I can only imagine the trouble a Zero Turn can get into lol
As always, entertaining and informative! Thanks!
Thank you!👍🏻
Excellent video, very instructive.
Thank you! 👍🏻
I had to run to a window to make sure Winter didn’t sneak up on me all of a sudden. 😂
It's been a thorn in my side all season 😂
I've had them with every problem. Carbs leak valve bolts losses inside and out sump bolts... LoL
They definitely keep us busy 😂

Ugh, that's frustrating
Another Craftsman bangerr 🎉
Yes sir!! 👍🏻

Ahh now I see what you were saying 👍🏻. Yeah I found it interesting that the gasket was discontinued, probably because it was so problematic
I put red lock tight on the sump cover bolts and tighten them 😊
Perfect 👍🏻
It does make a difference if the coil is mounted upside down . The coil could burn out when mounted upside down. It is designed to be mounted only one way.
Correct 👍🏻

Agreed 👍🏻
Let me tell you I got a Toro 17 years old with that motor never one hiccup just do the maintenance it will last forever. PS has 920 hours.
That is an impressive amount of hours my friend! Good on ya! 👍🏻
I had a cub cadet 27 or 28 horse courage ran great no problems. 750 hours.
I have an 18hp courage on a Gravley zero turn it has 980 hrs on it, every year tighten the pan bolts, care for it they last.
Definitely a good idea 👍🏻
Did this mower work on top of a plate compactor? Never seen so many loose bolts… good job!
Right?! 😂 thank you 👍🏻
Got a 4000 to start on next week and they left it taken apart and it’s a mess 😢😢😢, but maybe it’s going to be parts 😊
Here's hoping 🤞
If 1 is good, 7 is perfect !!!😂 36:38
😂😂😂😂👍🏻
One thing I do on every one is replace deck spindle bearing and new head gasket, seems to pay off 😮😊😊😊
Definitely a good practice 👍🏻
Did you save the old headlight lense and polish it up so you have a spare?
I did tuck it away to be cleaned up later 👍🏻
I put a manual fuel cut off valve on every rider and zero turn 😢
If there is a fire you can cut the fuel off and possibly save the engine
Great point 👍🏻
Yeah, 18 ftlbs. I was guessing something like 20-25, so not too far off. If worse comes to worst you can always just get up a chart for fastener torques and go by the spec for that particular size and grade of bolt. Right? 😉

Definitely better to be safe than sorry 👍🏻
Is that snow on the ground ???😢
I actually shot the beginning of this video last March/April lol no snow yet!
Ever use liquid tape ? 😮 35:52
Yes! Especially when heat shrink isn't an option 👍🏻
I’m 73 and I write what I do down or I get mixed up working on so many different ones at the same time 😮😮 yep I’m starting to age 😢
I do that too, otherwise I'm lost 😂
At 77 my brain works just as good as it always has. Of course it’s 77 years old, so do I really trust it to make that evaluation?
😁
no fuel shut off?
I didn't bother adding one on this machine, never a bad idea to add one however the last batch I bought almost all of them leaked so I figured why chance fate lol
HP is high pretension. I think it’s got something to do with your heart, but I’m not a doctor.
So the joke I made was " I don't know what HD is but my doctor says I have 80 of them!" Which is supposed to mean the doctor said I have AD-HD and I misinterpreted it....it's a bad joke lol but I appreciate your concern 👍🏻

You're in my thoughts and prayers 👍🏻
No ethanol fuel would stop a lot of problems!
Agreed 100% 👍🏻
I don’t like the kohler engines and for sure the single cylinder 😢😢😢
They are junk 😮
Agreed 👍🏻
