    To a claim made by Jeff O'Neill (from the 6:38 mark) about Tavares, there IS a precedent for stripping an NHL team captainship: that of winger Blake Wheeler, from whom in mid-September 2022 then-Winnipeg Jets' head coach Rick Bowness (still for now the Manitoba team's HC) stripped the captaincy. It IS about results, and late-summer 2022 had been near the end of an offseason that'd started with the Jets' having not qualified for postseason play.

    • @02smithm1
      @02smithm1 20 дней назад +7

      JT needs to have the captaincy stripped. The league's most boring captain on the team which needs a strong leader the most. Leafs need more then just 'leading by example' on the ice. They need passion, screaming at the underperforming players in the intermission, dragging them back on the ice when they aren't putting in enough of a shift.
      JT is NOT the man to lead this team (his playoff record has been poor going right back to his time with the Islanders).

    A coach's speeches have little to nothing to do with winning. The players aren't going to think: "oh crap, we have to try harder because the game is really important; why didn't I think of that?!" You need a good system based on the talent you have. Marner and Matthews don't have the compete level in them to pay a physical price like Bergeron. Domi has the drive but not the talent or the smarts, again, like Bergeron. Their system is built around their elite scorers yet they had more success with below average scoring games without the best scorer in the league and the stars were a backup goalie, and just one of their core, Nylander. They thought Tavares was going to put them over the top when actually it likely led to years of failure. They already had prime scoring. They needed a stud defense that they could have got moving up in the draft or overpaying a declining team with what they resourced to JT. Instead, they overpaid JT and Marner by a lot.

  • @goodflop255

    4 overpaid forwards with no trade deals. What could go wrong. They only show up sporadically in the playoffs, well 3 of them, Marner doesn't show up at all and should have been traded last year if he wasn't given such an asinine contract. Who would you rather have on your team Marner or Zack Hyman? 8 years wasted with this bunch and I would be surprised if even one of them cares. Too much money for too little effort and too little return. Why should they play hard?

    why did they not load up the top line when needed? I only saw Matthews Marner and Nylander together once.

  • @angiebee532
    @angiebee532 19 дней назад +2

    It starts in the regular season. The focus has to stop being on Matthews personal achievements. The team has talent. Other players can play. But they have no clue how to play together as a team because they are conditioned to play strictly for Matthews to get a goal. If that mentality and coaching style continues, you will continue to suppress the rest of the players abilities. They are throwing their own players under the bus every year heading into the playoffs. You never trained them to work as a team in the regular season and didn't give anyone else enough ice time to give them confidence to play. Then, in the playoffs every year, Matthews is one of the most unreliable players and you need the rest of the team to play and they don't know how because Matthew's one timers are not an option in the playoffs. So fix that. The proof that this is 100% a problem is that nylander wasn't there for the first 3 games and we barely made it. As soon as matthews was out the team played. Matthews came back for game 7 and that mentality instantly defaulted back to Matthews has to score. So the rest of the team said screw it. And we lost.

    Matthews wanted more ice time. Lou and Babcock would not change their style to fit any player even if it is their highest scorer. Enter Dubas and Keefe. Keefe had to eat his own words to sooth Matthews et all.
    No one wants to talk about the elephant in the room because he scores 69 goals. Remember when Matthews was ragged dolled and the entire Leaf bench looked on with zero interest. Zero response. Anyone how has played hockey, has followed hockey knows why.

    In Keefes defense he would had played Woll but he was injured. Leafs goalie could had attempted a polk check on that Pasta game winner but that was a 50-50 gamble also. Lindholms shot pass to the corner boards was definitely a play they had practiced. The defense should had at least tried to stop Pasta even if they took a tripping penalty in that situation.

    Their primary focus down the stretch was to get Matthews 70 goals; however, it should have been to prep for round 1 and figure out how to play playoff hockey starting at Game 1 instead of Game 5. Blame Marner all you want, but Keefe (and probably the higher ups) chose to focus on Matthews' personal stats over team success.

Entire coaching staff needs to go ! I don't know what kind of injuries our top paid players were working through but they were mostly invisible. Tavares is no leader of this team. Captaincy needs to change. Samsonov is a great back up goalie but not a starter in important games. We've got some homework to do on the off season.

    Stop talking about stripping the C from Tavares or trading him. He barely touches the puck unless he's advancing it while the team barely sets him up for 3 straight years. How can everyone not see what is obvious?..the guy routinely finds open ice in the o-zone...and play after play after play since Sheldon Keefe has been the coach Tavares doesn't get set up! Look at how much a player like Sam Reinhart gets the puck or Patrice Bergeron when he played. It seems that all Top 6 centre in the NHL get lots of setups except for John because he plays with such diva Core 3 players. HIS ONLY GOAL OF THE PLAYOFFS CAME FROM A SILLY LOOSE PUCK IN THE SLOT - AND THEN HE BURIES IT WITH AN ELITE AND ELUSIVE SLAP SHOT - IF THAT LOOSE PUCK DOESN'T HAPPEN, JOHNNY DOESN'T SCORE AT ALL BECAUSE THIS TEAM CAN'T PASS FOR GOALS. Other than that he was battling his ass off, winning draws, puck battles and nobody was passing back to him...This forward group hasn't set him up routinely since Babcock was the coach. Tavares sacrificed his legacy by joining the Maple Leafs and should be thanked immensely for puting up with this bull. IMHO, an excellent captain. This current iteration of the Maple Leafs is what has held Tavares back. Get rid of the coach and get somebody old school again so that John can finally be set up again. Marner and Reilly should waive, sign everybody else. TAVARES cannot be replaced until about 36. There's no other C in the league that can do what he does. Be honest. His skating is his weakest point, but he is way above average in every other area. If he gets the puck then his 5v5 numbers will increase along with his plus/minus.
