I agree. Bases are very helpful to beginners. I use bases, only because I'm terrible at drawing regularly on ms paint, but I know that I'll stop using bases one day...
This is a great speedpaint, but you do have room for improvement. I think you should clean up the line art for the main and tail a lot, especially when you sketch. I suggest you do all of the sketches first, copy that, use the line tool over it, and use that as the final product. The way you do it now makes it look sloppy and glitchy.
