it's tough for people to learn stick these days since like 95% of americans have autos. so growing up you kind of only see one type of car. its pretty understandable that phil never learned.
Phil!! I remember when I was learning it, it was no where near easy. I love driving standard but it took forever learning. I can see your frustration and I'm smiling at the similar feeling of long ago. I loved this video, where I can totally totally relate. Thanks for the uploads, whoever edits and does camera angles, great job!
I think Ted and Wes were a little harsh considering everytime he stalled they would keep telling him how bad he was. That's a lot of pressure to get it right, especially since he was focused on not burning the clutch of someone else's car.
phil just reminds me of my 1st time driving stick! learning process is always hard, even tho i stalled the car numerous times but im all good now, still love my manual car after 6yrs
The forester is a great car with great handling, fuel economy, interior. It also has great support and great features for the money. I recommend it 100%. If you want to drive stick, you can get it on the forester 2.5i and 2.5i premium (unfortuantelly not any of the turbo models, but thats okay). Also, on higher models, you can get eyesight too.
felt bad for Phil, i thought he was doing good, just had a low of confidence and pressure. but yeah it's not really a hard car to drive, but not that easy too. but good try Phil. Plus nice shirt Ted, where'd you get it :O
Manual transmission cars are damn hard! I have a hard time now learning it too. Bt the countings on the stalling was just so funny. And the helmet! Lol
I am also just learning how to drive a stick and I was just as nervous as Phil but this video made me feel so much better about feeling like the only bad driver in a manual car.
CLUTCHES ARE SO DAMN EXPENSIVE. I only bought an Exedy OEM replacement to change my clutch and not the Stage 1 kit. But even the Exedy OEM one was like $128 with shipping and tax and with a big discount. The only thing is that my Exedy is like a freaking lightswitch. When it grabs, it GRABS. Not as forgiving, but I like the bite when I'm in the mood.
Woo hoo!!!!!! Can't wait until Oct!!! luv Phil's voice and I hope you guys don't change it. Ted is so funny. I like the expressions on his face. I hope you guys are having fun in NYC.. I'm a Bronx Bomber like JLo! Luv u all. And as always Luv u Phil!!! You know Phil you gotta little bit gangstea swag in you. Ted too. Wes I haven't really heard your gangsta swag. Luv u.
I've never been taught how to drive stick either... but for real Phil, you're a trooper! I remember being taught by my mom how to drive in general and it was a nightmare - my whole family criticizing me. Ugh. Hated it. WAY TO GO FOR HANGING IN THERE!
I remember first learning how to drive standard. It took me less than a month to learn. Everyday I went out and practiced out on an empty road but once I got out onto the streets I kept stalling at stop lights. Haha, so I could relate to this video.
Brand new clutch?! Wow..... Phil is lucky! I think an WRX is maybe not the best idea for the first car to learn on. But, everyone has to learn somewhere! I learned on a 2000 Honda Civic EX coupe, and I still drive it. I have heard that Subarus have really good clutches (Stage 2?) so that's a plus!
lol phil actually did a really good job. i remember when i first learned i had a TRUCK to practice with and omg i stalled like 20 times each day...but eventually you get used to it and that car looks way easier to use
I first learned how to drive a manual stick shift with only subaru transmissions. First it was a subaru forester (which had a tricky engagement point), then a subaru wrx, then my own first car, a 00 Subaru impreza 2.5rs GC6. Subarus are definitely a little more challenging to first learn how to drive a manual transmission on, it is not as forgiving and soft as a honda or a toyota. Toyota and honda stock clutches are very soft. Subarus clutch gives you a lot more feeling and feedback.
i totally understand what phil means when ppl say ease off the clutch! I totally thought the same thing as him!! it took me awhile to understand that haha!!
completely sympathetic with phil. Went through exactly same issues. Letting the clutch off slowly while pressing the gas pedal at medium speed is a lot more difficult than it sounds.
having experience in automatic doesn't hurt your transition to clutch, it only helps. Considering the fact that you already know automatic, Learning stick is really just practicing muscle memory, and practicing until it becomes like second nature.
wow. most people learn to drive stick on a beater. I had to pay for lessons to learn on a instructor's old accord. The only way to really learn to drive manual is to own a manual car and drive it so much it becomes muscle memory like riding a bike. I enjoyed watching this video. Phil is hilarious when he's all riled up. hahah
When Wes said "Be cool." I thought of Spongbob Squarepants... that one episode with that race car driver's soon teaching Spongebob how to drive lol. X)
@Qweklain sure it does. WRX clutches are fine. the torque helps because not much (if any) throttle is required. you can just slipthe clutch tto get it going. They should have taught him that first. fyi, a C5 Corvette wasn't that bad either.
This is exactly me last summer when my dad was teaching me how to drive clutch! Luckily, my dad's a Ted-personality when he's teaching (and just in general), so it wasn't so bad. Phil, I feel your pain.
i agree phil! its a harder car. wen i learned on a plymoth neon(weak sauce car), i stalled maybe like once. my sister in laws mustang i stalled... maybe 3 times starting and 2 times driving around..... but still wasnt over 10 stalls :P
phil: i was really impressed when you got it on the first try. after that....lol, i did the same thing when i first learned. you handled the frustration really well =] & yea, wes & ted are right.....it's way different when you try to start from a standing stop at an intersection, & even worse when you're on an up-hill slope. good job though!! you figured it out pretty fast
Erm.... The hood scoop doesn't "bring more power to the engine". It does bring in more cold air, however. That cold air goes to the intercooler on top of the engine to keep the engine from overheating. It's a supporting mod for turbo cars. So.... I guess it makes more power possible....
that car ted drives is one of the best off-roading rally car in the word, and has a high bhp, its going to be rough on the clutch and harder at the starts
when you're in gear 1, you just have to push the clutch to brake but when u start changing to gear 2 or so, you don't have to push on clutch and then brake unless you're doing a complete stop, you have to push on clutch first then brake.. and yes, you can be in random gear, push in the clutch and brake to do a complete stop and then change to neutral.. u must change to neutral once u do a complete stop.. and then start with gear 1 again.. you push both clutch and brake for emergency brake..
Phil was exactly me learning for the first time. "EVERYBODY STOP!" When no one was talking and over thinking things lol!
"What I wanna know is why he started driving when I said 'red'," I totally lost it xD
back here watching this again
it's tough for people to learn stick these days since like 95% of americans have autos. so growing up you kind of only see one type of car. its pretty understandable that phil never learned.
Wes is such a back seat driver lol
i still come back to
watch this episode. its my favorite
i love philip so much. his personality is just so...incredible
This is like my favourite episode.
Who's here after watching the first Wong Fu Whenevers?
Wes looks so cool after the wheel !!
Phil!! I remember when I was learning it, it was no where near easy. I love driving standard but it took forever learning. I can see your frustration and I'm smiling at the similar feeling of long ago. I loved this video, where I can totally totally relate. I think Ted and Wes were a little harsh considering everytime he stalled they would keep telling him how bad he was. That's a lot of pressure to get it right, especially since he was focused on not burning the clutch of someone else's car.
i wanna stay stupid so i can get smarter
Ted's expressions whenever Phil stalled the car~ PRICELESS!
Hahhahahhaahaa...... I laughed so hard.... Wes is a good teacher.... xD
Ted's a good teacher
phil just reminds me of my 1st time driving stick! learning process is always hard, even tho i stalled the car numerous times but im all good now, still love my manual car after 6yrs
My dad loves driving his manual . He's been using his Subaru Forester for 14 years (even if he's a little aggressive when he drives)
+HashtagRIP great to hear that! In fact, im considering getting a Forester for its AWD and versatility lol

I feel Phils pain I just learned to drive stick
Ted! I love that you are wearing the Stig on your shirt!!
Take him to San Francisco and have him practice on the hills with someone pulled up right behind so he can't slip backwards lol!
16 stalls.
Manual transmission cars are damn hard! I have a hard time now learning it too. Bt the countings on the stalling was just so funny. And the helmet! Lol
Makes me feel I'm actually sitting next to Wes :")
Seriously one of my favorite WFWs
I am also just learning how to drive a stick and I was just as nervous as Phil but this video made me feel so much better about feeling like the only bad driver in a manual car.
This is hilarious! Especially when Phil thought the car was broken after it stalled! XD
i think this is one of the funniest wong fu weekend episodes lolz
The combination of your personalities is what makes you funny as a group :)
CLUTCHES ARE SO DAMN EXPENSIVE. I only bought an Exedy OEM replacement to change my clutch and not the Stage 1 kit. @3:30 Phil started psyching himself out like "EVERYONE STOP" I laughed so hard!
Luv u.
im going to learn stick soon and this vid def made me see learning something new in a more humorous light, thanks wfw :)
2:50 lol Phil: "I can't understand you" Ted: "I DON'T WANT TO DIE!"
Love the Stig shirt!
I love how Wes and Ted just looked at each other when Phil starts to talk. They were like "Sure,Phil.Whatever." :D
is there a full video on Ted explaining how to drive stickshift? :D
I love it when Ted gets exasperated xD
woooo wong fu weekends is coming back!! nd just in time for my birthday :)
The Stig!
Good job Phil, it's pretty unnerving to show your first attempts at driving stick publically. Wes and Ted, you guys are great teachers x9!
I've never been taught how to drive stick either... but for real Phil, you're a trooper! I remember being taught by my mom how to drive in general and it was a nightmare - my whole family criticizing me. Ugh. Hated it. WAY TO GO FOR HANGING IN THERE!
Lol this video made me feel so much better about my first attempts in learning how to drive stick... THANKS PHIL!
lol seeing you stall it so many times reminded me of how I was when I learned how to drive a stick!! My husband kept yelling at me "more gas!!!"
I remember first learning how to drive standard. It took me less than a month to learn. Everyday I went out and practiced out on an empty road but once I got out onto the streets I kept stalling at stop lights. Haha, so I could relate to this video.
Its impressing you actually had that first try. I failed on a WRX first time because of it's hard clutch
hahaha seriously, watching wong fu videos ALWAYS makes my day! :D
Every time the "STALL" face popped up I laughed more and more... woooeee, I needed that, hahaha...

LOL I went through this last weekend... Learning to drive standard too. Stalled wayyy too many times.
Everytime the stall face came up i laughed my head off LOL
I first learned how to drive a manual stick shift with only subaru transmissions. First it was a subaru forester (which had a tricky engagement point), then a subaru wrx, then my own first car, a 00 Subaru impreza 2.5rs GC6. I feel your struggle Phil. I just learned stick from my brother a few months back while experiencing all the same struggles you did.
i totally understand what phil means when ppl say ease off the clutch! I totally thought the same thing as him!! it took me awhile to understand that haha!!
What do people always see in Wes? He's nice and all but Phil is the sweetest thing ever and he's himself infront of the camera! I love you Phil
completely sympathetic with phil. Went through exactly same issues. Letting the clutch off slowly while pressing the gas pedal at medium speed is a lot more difficult than it sounds.
ted wear did u get that shirt its cool thumbs up for STIG
having experience in automatic doesn't hurt your transition to clutch, it only helps.
Considering the fact that you already know automatic, Learning stick is really just practicing muscle memory, and practicing until it becomes like second nature.
Now I totally get your struggle, I just got a 06 manual Mustang and this shit is frustrating as heck
AHAHAHAAHAHA SO FUNNY -___-
love wes and his cool
lolol is that hobo ted at the end?!?!?!
lol... when wes goes, he does it like a pro... hahahahaha one handed and everything haha
TED, WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR SHIRT?!?!?!?!
HAHAHAH, I love it!
Ted's "what are you doing???" is the best thing I've ever heard..
wow. most people learn to drive stick on a beater. I had to pay for lessons to learn on a instructor's old accord. The only way to really learn to drive manual is to own a manual car and drive it so much it becomes muscle memory like riding a bike.

THE WAY TED SAYS, "I don't wanna die!"
Whooot!! I want that Stig T-shirt Ted's wearing! :D it's epic
Seriously can't wait for a new season of WFW/. W4L man.
phil: i was really impressed when you got it on the first try. after that....lol, i did the same thing when i first learned. you handled the frustration really well =] & yea, wes & ted are right.....it's way different when you try to start from a standing stop at an intersection, & even worse when you're on an up-hill slope. good job though!! you figured it out pretty fast
Dudes, you should only be on the 1 for about a few seconds, but hilarious to watch reminds me of when I started to learn how to drive. XD
this actually helps me get ready to drive in the future :D
Wong fu drinking game!!! Every time Phil stalls u take a shot xD go for it!
I had the exact same feeling as Phil when he says he finally understand "ease of the clutch" after he saw Wes drive!
hahahaha I LOLed when Phil was like rambling on by himself and then he was like "OK EVERYONE STOP!! >
I totally understand the red light stalling! That scenario was exactly what i faced!
Great job guys! :DDDD
i realllyyy miss the WFW episodes!
LOL Wes and Ted:"HURRY UP! LEARN TO DRIVE!!"
OMG... getting viscous on poor Phil! I feel your pain, Phil. It was a little tough for me to learn, but I learned a LOT by watching like you did!
"Eeeeeeeeez of the clutch"- ted sounded like a father xD
i had my lessons recently! my first lesson was horrible too!:D
Is Ted's shirt from from .. gahhh where is it from?!
OH YEAH TOP GEAR :D
Erm.... The hood scoop doesn't "bring more power to the engine". It does bring in more cold air, however. That cold air goes to the intercooler on top of the engine to keep the engine from overheating. It's a supporting mod for turbo cars. So.... I guess it makes more power possible....
that traffic light practice was funny. hahaha :) I stalled on a traffic light, it wasn't a good experience. hahaha :D
that car ted drives is one of the best off-roading rally car in the word, and has a high bhp, its going to be rough on the clutch and harder at the starts
I love love love Phil, but it is honestly SO FUNNY seeing him frustrated :) Maybe it's the expressions he makes XD
Lol I watch this over and over again to hear Phil say suburu and Wes say I wanna stay stupid so I can get smarter LOL
ted: "don't ever downshift, you're a noob" LOL
omg ted's shirt is awesome!
lol what Wes said was funny! "I want to stay stupid so i can get smarter" HAHAH
when you're in gear 1, you just have to push the clutch to brake but when u start changing to gear 2 or so, you don't have to push on clutch and then brake unless you're doing a complete stop, you have to push on clutch first then brake.. and yes, you can be in random gear, push in the clutch and brake to do a complete stop and then change to neutral.. u must change to neutral once u do a complete stop.. and then start with gear 1 again.. you push both clutch and brake for emergency brake..
Im Japanese and I can say Phil did a great job of imitating the Japanese version of saying "Subaru WRXuu". Shit cracked me up haha
Ted and Wes are the most patient people ever.
I love the fact that Ted's the car guy. The one who loves cats is the car guy. So cute
I watched this years ago, and laughed about it.. Now, I feel you bro LOL the feels of driving manual...
Ohmygoshhh TED's cominggggg ! STALLED
i love that subaru's always make an appearance on WF videos
"Everyone, STOP!!"
No one's even talking. HAHAHAHA
