I think that it's a personal choice on what you like more, but I must say every song fits every movie it's intended for in the best possible way. The 2020 version is far more epic, more warrior-like, and yes, a bit much because the film itself requires it. The riff, long extended notes, and distortion are intentional and very effective, especially towards the end when we see the battles. It's amazing to get 2 iconic interpretations of the same song by a superb singer 22 years later. :)

This is the thing. Christina has never been taught. She didn’t sit there with a vocal coach to learn singing, she was born with the ability and self taught herself by listening to vocal powerhouses like Etta James, Whitney Houston, Nina Simone, etc. You can teach all the technical and proper ways of singing to someone who also possesses the ability to sing, but you can’t teach raw emotion and feeling to someone. Christina has that. The original version, at the time, was impressive and it still is today. She was 17 at the time. She probably had someone helping her how to convey the song the way Disney wanted it conveyed. This new version is the interpretation of Christina the artist. This is her take as a woman and a person who has experienced 20 plus years of life. This version takes on a new meaning. She also shows the different layers of her voice that make the audience feel the different emotions of the film and her life, personally. I think she nailed it!

Because they can’t understand how she can do so much with her voice it makes them uncomfortable. Xtina voice is god given cant be taught and couches hate that cuz she can do anything while they have to train to much to be good haha
I hear whatcha saying....i think the 1998 version she was singing as a girl who was still figuring out who she is, while the 2020 version she's a grown woman who already knows...which does make a difference. Still love it
I will never understand why vocal coaches always want to hear the same type of voices (the boring ones). Everything that is not clean and precise or that has something beautiful, different and unique like riffs, runs, distortions, etc they always shoot it down. Is it jealousy?
You give more credit to the way she ends the 1998 version, it's the same way she ended the 2020 version? And you don't seem pleased with the climax in 2020, even though that is a long and sustained note with no runs? I think you're just not comfortable with change, sir. You're entitled to your feelings, but I hope you're willing to at least acknowledge that.
I agree that there's too much a huskiness in some parts, and her style has always been to insert too many runs. She's always done both things actually. This was nowhere near as bad as in another performances of hers. She has actually reigned it in.
She is Christina Aguilera for major reason. The music industry is ever evolving. Obsolete way of music is no longer receptive in today's generation. The new generation don't care about what those teacher wannabes and know it all about music... all they care is that they were able to express what they want to tell.

Love the original but the 2020 version is grand in comparison, which would suit the film's epic feel. The idea of having christina sing a softer version of a song without acrobatics is off brand for her. Its like asking mariah to not whisper sing. I much prefer this newer version. The elongated note was very Celine and takes my breathe away everytime I hear it. Curious to know how you would make it supreme? The only thing I didn't care for was the tempo.
Xtina STAN were always so stupid to attack someone who had negative opinions. Whether the vocal coach could or couldnt sing the riffs, he still had every right to say why he disliked 'part' of the songs.
I prefer the version 2020, the arrangements, vocaly. It suits the story of a warrior, hearing and seeing this, got me more excited about the movie, I felt the message too, I felt like she was talking to me. I love it so much.
I think you nailed it when you said the new version doesn't sound as much in sync with the theme of the song (the insecurities and fears of not being true to oneself) but it's more like a song by a warrior princess now. And that's probably Christina's mindset. She was a shy little girl just starting in the business when she recorded the 1998 version, and now over 20 years later she has grown and she feels stronger and more authentic, so the new Reflection is like a post-Reflection. There's no insecurity in the way she sings the song now because to her it must be like a journey back in time, celebrating that now her reflection does show who she is inside. It loses the connection to the theme, but it's wonderful when you compare both Christina's and how her own voice has grown.
For an animated film (target market are kids and young adults) with singing part by the lead, obviously the more subtle, subdue and personal approach fits since there is a scene where Mulan sings and sees her reflection in the pond but for a live action movie (target market for all ages especially during this era of empowerment) with no singing and part of the soundtrack, a more mature and powerful version is needed to fit the approach/concept. You can't have it too cute or personal. The lyrics of the song itself screams desperation and cry of getting out of the facade or masks of one's circumstances. Crying in silence isn't empowering but crying out loud, being angry and asking for change within and out often requires bigger gestures & more emotions that fits more this time.
I didn't think it was overdone, considering how she sang the first one... it was a bit different but runs and riffs were present in both in the same way I'd say
This version is more powerful, orchestra and voice come together perfectly. I think the idea of a new version is that it be different from the original and show vocal maturity, as well as a change. The song shows the power that the character will have in the live action, it is as if in the 1998 version Mulán is just being discovered and in the 2020 version Mulán is already with the warrior that she is. This new version is beautiful and superior!!!

Notice what is funny: Christina Aguilera really knows how to be a vocalist. But she started singing from a violent, bad ground in her life when she was kid. She opened up the windows while her father was hitting her mother and she used to sing out loud not to hear that, and she did the same to her sister, singer very loud to her sister not hear those violence screams. Its very hard a teacher comes and say "oh shes doing it wrong/ its not healthy" man she still got that VOICE, almost 40 years since she started singing when she was child. She def has her own way to sing, shes not trying to copy anyone. Remember, sing is a form of expression from soul, heart. I saw very tecnically singers out there with zero emotion. So...
Hello! Blessings to everyone! 🙏🏾🤲🏾💛Here I leave you the video where Christina explained that this version will be more powerful, and her tone would be stronger than the original one. ruclips.net/video/EWQMBTZmqaM/видео.html for that reason thought like that comparing the previous version. However I respect your opinion. Peace! ✌🏾
It’s a pop ballad that was elevated because the older version was very cookie cutter and withholding. This was way more epic and appropriate for this love action movie. If you know anything about CHRISTINA AGUILERA, SHE IS NOT SIMPLE!!
Thank you for a very insightful analysis of both versions! I find myself agreeing with a lot of your points, as well as learning new vocab and ways to deconstruct performances. While the 2020 vers is epic and her warrior-like confidence as a mature woman is great, I personally identify with the vulnerability of the 1998 version. Thank you again!
I know you are the pro here, but for us audiences, this new version gave us CHILLS you know? The sentiment. I get your point, original song is magical 🙏
Christina is one of my favorites (along with Whitney, Mariah, Celine). I agree with your assessment, there were too many rifts. She has a wonderful voice; no need to make the song so complicated. It was a beautiful and simple video, her singing should have matched.
Thank you, Montcoshire! I also love her voice. She is a standout among voices and artists. I feel she (and her team, I'm sure) were just trying to find a way to distinguish this interpretation from the last. (Truly, I was skeptical when I heard the plan.) I really like her singing in Loyal Brave True, for which I have a reaction, as well. I really applaud her work on that!
You are right, I would have preferred a thousand times for her to sing this version in a cleaner way but it is impossible, she prefers quantity instead of quality, she adds a lot and ends up ruining the song but it is something that Aguilera does and the fans will defend her to death, I say it because I am a fan too but not a stupid fan. Keep up the content!
Her 1998 version was a very cartoony and very juvenile. Her voice matched it then. This 2020 version sounded sounded live action, exciting, and perfect soundtrack. Her voice sounded mature and strong Lea salonga's version is theatrical. Cant imagine hearing that in a live action Mulan.

I find that the original is soft, for a soft animated movie. This plays more to a live more emotionally charged film. Playing more to adults than children.

Wow. All those Xtina Stans are crushing the comment section. Ignore all those sensitive stans. It's nothing wrong to say "it's too many riffs". Are we in China?
Hi Pig Pig, I agree that she is a marvelous vocal artist and that she has an amazing sound in this song. My critique has more to do with whether her choices fulfill the point of the song or whether she imposes effects just to distinguish between this and the former recording. I feel it skews towards the latter and so more is less for me in this case. It's not that her abilities aren't impressive; we all seem to agree on that. I would rather, with the maturity of age, that she sang it more soulfully rather than showy. That would have made it "superior" for me. I appreciate your comment and thank you for hearing me.
Hi Joved! You are right that Salonga sang the original Reflection within the context of the story in the 1998 film, but I meant Christina's lyrics, which are reworked to become a completely different song, the one whose versions we are comparing here. How I said that wasn't quite clear, so thank you for picking up on that. What do you think of the film lyrics versus the ones Xtina sings?
That's totally fair. I'm glad you enjoy it. It's not that I think it's bad, as I said, but that her approach is overwrought and would be more suited for some different song with different lyrics, like what she does with Loyal Brave True, which I think is masterful.

Hi Ernesto, I appreciate your disagreeing with my position, and I respect your opinion. To clarify, it's not that riffs are wrong at all, just that they serve as ornamentation in this genre of music, and it is my opinion that when the melody gets obscured from too many showy riffs, they interrupt the song. It's not that riffs are not welcome in music. In other genres, such as in certain types of jazz, riffs become the heart of the music. It's a matter of structure, and at base, communication.
@@DayleSong @xtina is if not the best vocalist alive one of the best ones these days. There is no one in the current music industry with so powerful voice as Xtina.
I'm 100% with you on there being too many riffs in the 2020 version -- it's such a beautiful melody as is and while i'm all for singers putting their own spin on something, trying to add something to every line makes those "enhancements" just all kind of blend together and become 'less than' for me. On the other hand, I didn't mind the vocal flips -- I actually like when people do that in songs even though it's bad vocal technique. It's interesting about the punctuation difference in the sheet music. I'm gonna try to find my mulan CD and see how the lyrics are printed in the liner notes to see if it matches.

I think it’s a matter of taste and I’ve noticed people who teach singing tend to knock xtina for her use of runs. Weird. Wonder why.
That's exactly what it is. If he was to sing this song himself, I bet it wouldnt be as impactful.
Calm down you seem pressed for no reason. Replying to your own comment lmaoo
She is Christina Aguilera for major reason. The music industry is ever evolving. Obsolete way of music is no longer receptive in today's generation. The new generation don't care about what those teacher wannabes and know it all about music... all they care is that they were able to express what they want to tell.
I personally love her runs and the character of her voice. People who prefer Lea Songla’s version probably don’t season their food.
Oh my gosh 😂😂
Dark BITTER choco
Try this mulan reflection cover from Katrina Velarde. You wont regret it. Promise. Its the best cover so far. ruclips.net/video/L9GoRTXzdbA/видео.html
Pls shout me out. Thanks.
That’s Christina. She is known for riffs
Have several seats . She’s one of the voices in the world . Bow down to the queen. Let’s hear you sing
CHRISTINA AGUILERA ICON ! SHE IS A SINGER NOT A STUPID MEN CRITIZEN A LEYEND . SHE IS A TRUE SINGER .
All vocal coaches talk this way about Xtina vocals, but when they sing they do it awful and pitchy
Exactly!
OMG I love that you TOO are excited to see Gong Li. This is what I've been saying that excites me the most. Mulan and Hatsumomo showdown!
I dont think Christina believes you can have too many rifts lol. Ill just let her do her thing. Its incredible
I am a hardcore xtina fan,and I really love your honest opinion, honesty is better than those sugar coated praises, you should react to more of Xtina videos..Let people be negative or positive in your videos,it means your content is speaking to people....
Hi ntuzunkaurintah! Thank you for your amazing encouragement! It means a lot to me. I love Xtina, too! And I had to be honest. Otherwise there's no point. I also reacted to the new song from Mulan--Loyal Brave True, and I could use more recomomendations. What are some of your favorites?
@@DayleSong Christina Aguilara James brown tribute It’s Man’s world ,her duet with Bryan McKnight have yourself a merry Christmas and her lift me up Haiti fundraise event are some of my fav performances among many
Even after hearing this song countless times, I learned something new from you.
Thank you for the heroic guidance on my Reflection cover, Dayle! 😀
It's been a privilege to work on your cover with you! I can't wait till it's posted!
I'm really looking forward to hearing it!
You definitely know what you're saying! I am now following you!I have been a fan of her since the 90's!
PERFECT! SHE IS AMAZING!
So...
The riffs were necessary to change from the original. It has to be different.
I love it ...she is great
3:57 its the same riff as in the original?
Queen 👸
I know you are the pro here, but for us audiences, this new version gave us CHILLS you know? The sentiment. I get your point, original song is magical 🙏
Pleas react to her more! Love Christina so much
Thank you, Jawei Liu!
Love Christina 🥰
Waiting how long it will take for him to be asked to react to queen So Hyang 😊😊😆
I’m a huge Christina fan and I agree with you, I prefer the original too
2020 >>>>>>
SHE IS INSANE
The one and only CHRISTINA AGUILERA ❤👑
She was incredible.
Hi Daniel, I agree she has a beautiful voice and is truly one of the best out there today.
Please React to Katrina Velarde a Filipina, cover Mulan Reflection. Thank you
Thank you, Lovelydaisies Cervantes! That's a unique suggestion. I'll check her cover out.
React to Christina Aguilera’s the christmas song performance on Seth Meyers show
Thank you for the recommendation! I'll take note of it!
Her 1998 version was a very cartoony and very juvenile. Her voice matched it then.
This 2020 version sounded sounded live action, exciting, and perfect soundtrack. Her voice sounded mature and strong
Lea salonga's version is theatrical. Cant imagine hearing that in a live action Mulan.
Yes please react to Loyal Brave true oficial video and her live version
I prefer 1998, because it's beautiful, tender and delicate.
That Christina from the past is a girl going to war.
The 2020 Christina is a woman already at war.
I love both.
Thank you for sharing -- that's a great insight! I'm glad you enjoyed the new one, too.
Guys, let's hold those strong opinions, because they are becoming personal attacks on the gentleman. He's been very respectful throughout the entire video and very complimentary to Christina, let's all respect that.
Thank you, Vinicius! I'm grateful to have someone thoughtful enough to stand up and speak in my defense in light of personal attacks. I expected some healthy push back, but hateful commentary is unwarranted, interrupive and unwelcome in a RUclips forum. My job as I see it is to point things out to help refine the ear of the listener, particularly for singers and students of singing. To all viewers, I hoped my point was made that I do love Christina's voice and talent, yet my critique is not meant to bash her, but to react as I would in the voice studio. As I said, try to hear my points, but then go back and enjoy her work as much as you like, maybe with a sharper attuned ear; or at least I would hope. You might enjoy your music listening even more. Otherwise seeking out the reaction of a vocal coach is merely an exercise in looking for agreement with your own already formed opinion. There are many inexpert reactions to be found that will provide you with that. All the same, I appreciate those who have felt compelled to share their passions about Christina. It tells me that real singing is still highly valued. And that is music to my ears.
Plss react to( katrina velarde)

Is this video really in 360p or is my tablet broken?
Xtina is amazing!! The one and only. ❤️👑
Thanks for watching, Matt. Xtina is indeed extraordinary!
1998 - holding back, a little careful
2920- strong, powerful, amazing! ❤️ Love this one better.
The original Christina version has relatively the same riffs and runs, it even has more runs towards the end.
But comparing it to the Lea Salonga version.. it’s a different story
I know this is a long shot but please react to babymetal - rondo of nightmare (mischiefs of gods intro). Thank you!

Yes, please do.,,!!!!!
can u check katrina velarde reflection... i wang to here your rections on her. thanks
The song " El perdon " by Diana Navarro
I find that the original is soft, for a soft animated movie. This plays more to a live more emotionally charged film. Playing more to adults than children.
I get that you feel different, but my god she did so much better on the new version. I would never recommend you as a vocal coach if you can’t see and appreciate an original sound and voice
I love the old version
Well OBVIOUSLY DISNEY LIKED IT SO THATS ALL THAT MATTERS.
Hello coach 🤗 Nice reaction! I want to suggest her Carpool Karaokê for You..i Hope i Can see one day this reaction... Crossing fingers☺️ maybe you like my suggestion and BOOM🔥 Record 😁🤭 hugs
Please react KATRINA VELARDE REFLECTION COVER... SURE U WILL LOVED IT.
There's no authority on "proper" riff usage
Just found your channel and liked your reaction. I have been trying to get a vocal coach to react to Jackie Evancho vocals but with no success. It would be cool if you could do a Then and Now reaction of when she was young verses today and what better song than Reflection. She first sung reflection when she was 12 years old ruclips.net/video/IXu5Nq7bZ80/видео.html and last year at 19 years old.ruclips.net/video/NwWCiqc0WGc/видео.html. I believe she has one the best voices around today. She was recently on The Masked Singer earlier this year. Thank you!
..never too many if you can actually do them😃
Wow. All those Xtina Stans are crushing the comment section.
Ignore all those sensitive stans. It's nothing wrong to say "it's too many riffs". Are we in China?
😂
Right!? People are allowed to have their own opinions and not everyone has to like her style.
Maybe also don’t be racist on a video about a song from Mulan.
@@CaptainPikeachu I have racism to my courtry. U are funny. Stating fact is not racist. Stop abusing racism
Can you sing that way ?
i agree she does over do riffs but to me she did great in this. But you are entitled to your opinion as am I.
@@DayleSong I understand.
I can hear that you do. I thank you for writing in and adding to the conversation!
I think its Lea Salonga the original singer
I see! ty! I like the 2020 version
That's totally fair. I'm glad you enjoy it. It's not that I think it's bad, as I said, but that her approach is overwrought and would be more suited for some different song with different lyrics, like what she does with Loyal Brave True, which I think is masterful.
Please react to Katrina Velarde version of Reflection ruclips.net/video/L9GoRTXzdbA/видео.html
Isn't that high? Wow really?
I disagree with this man. Riffs are important part of the songs.
It would've sounded better if it was sang by either Lea Salonga or Morissette Amon from the 🇵🇭. Just saying.
With all due respect im a filipino but the assignment didn't only require the voice itself and even so...lets leave it to that🤣
@@eilsaga643 respect my comment as well. Peace yow! 😅
