I try your paintings at home, wish I could show you them here.Your tutorial video is way better than the other time-leaps art videos that have millions of views. Wow this video came at a perfect time for me as I struggle inside my head with the painting I am working on at the moment. I keep worrying I will ruin it, but if I don’t actually paint it won’t go anywhere. I keep forgetting that I actually LOVE the whole process of watercolour. I love the flow, the colours the brushes, the peace. Thank you for talking about our own expression and style too. We all need to hear it. I love how you layer colours and build up the image. Thanks for sharing inspiring soft words and what you know.

I like the statement about translating what we see to the image on the paper. I had a figure drawing class(decades ago), and during breaks we would walk around and look at each other's sketches- I was amazed at how different they all looked, and yet still portrayed the model accurately.

“Shouldn’t we be able to just look at something, and paint it exactly as it is.” I was trained in ultra-realism, and I have come to believe that we have photography for that, and what happens between the eyes and the hand, that’s the art. (And okay, also the approach and materials,) One reason I like watercolor is the literal watery-ness of the paint makes photorealism very difficult. Your bright colors and combinations, are what make your art you.

I so admire the thing I want to paint that I try to copy it exactly as I see it, but when things get very complex, I will simplify while still trying to capture the essence. I know that requires me to somewhat interpret what I'm seeing but I don't see much creativity involved. Skill, yes. It's moving to impressionistic styles and abstraction that I think involves more creativity.

I’ve address this before in several videos 😊 my advice is always to trace - I’ve done this for almost 10 years before I got comfortable with free hand sketches, and still do it for portrait commissions. Of course the images have to be royalty free or your own! Nothing wrong with tracing as long as it’s within legal boundaries - in fact I offer black and white outlines for tracing on my PATREON because drawing requires a whole other set of skills which you don’t need to tackle if the goal is to build watercolor technique 😊 hope this helps!
