It is good this lecture was recorded and uploaded to RUclips. Richard Leakey makes a number of salient points. Considering how important his contribution to paleoarchaeology is, he was a modest man who always kept things in perspective and down-to-earth! Thanks for uploading.

Richard - having made observations of his fellow man at airports - spoke about modern humans having no Neanderthal admixture, but obviously since this talk was given, genetic studies have shown that, not only do humans have Neaderthal admixture, but that some have Denisivan admixture also.

He is wrong about his denial of a semi-aquatic past, but it was not a recent bottle-neck: it was how we became obligate bipeds in what is now SE Europe (on what is now the island of Crete) 6 million years ago....as we know from the Trachilos footprints (see Gierlinski et al 2018).

I don't know how they say we do not have DNA from Neanderthals as we don't know what DNA they had as there isn't any one to take DNA from if there was only a few thousand humans on the planet so many millions of years ago how come we all have different blood group and different DNA and to say we didn't come from the sea is a qeastanable as our blood has the same salt saturation as seawater and that is the same saturation in all the 7seas and for all human beings lastly nature is a force to wander it will reduce the population of humans by either viruse or wars and you my think wars are made by man but nature is the key an example when a viruse wants to get into a sheep to attack and eat its brain called scrapy it first gets in to an ant the ant then each day climbs to the top of a leaf of grass and stays there all day every day until a sheep comes along and eats that blad of grass and the ant with the controlling viruse ends up the sheepskin gut and then the virus makes it's way to the nervous system of the sheep and it's amazing how it knows how to control the ant and the sheepskin nervous system which brings me to the fact that humans are probably no different we are probably being controlled by many different viruses with different intentions

"Africa has considered almost residual appendage and yet it is Africa that has produced everything that gave rise to us…" "If we could demonstrate ... how we came into existence as a modern population … how WE relate to humans that live in Africa…" - Leaky just did exactly what he said people shouldn’t be doing. He refers to “WE” (i.e. modern humans) as if WE exist outside of Africa (with its origins in Africa) and as though the modern humans that have lived and evolved in Africa over the last 200,000 years are of little or no consequence or perhaps don’t even exist. He's talking as though Africa is important, but only because of its distant history and not because of who has been there since then except in as much as they've contributed to non-Africans.
