I really like the detail you added about magenta; it added some insight about their choice in using it. I always thought they chose it because that particular shade is kind of eerie and aggressive, but it makes way more sense and is more effective when you know that magenta "doesn't exist" and is consequently the only way the characters and the audience can perceive the "Color" in the movie.

I don't want to be overly patronizing of Nic Cage, but he was seriously, unironically awesome in this movie. I'd never liked him in anything until this movie.
Yeah, Nick Cage is actually a pretty good actor when he’s given proper direction. He needs guidance as to when he should release the crazy, and keep it subdued. It’s rare to find a director that understands this, it’s even rarer to find one who can do it properly.
During the scene at night with Ward at his tent reading a book, he hears a noise in the woods and goes to investigate. He shines his flashlight and catches a glimpse of the color, when suddenly his jeep starts by itself. The headlights of his jeep illuminate the book he was reading which is none other than "The Willows" by Algernon Blackwood, considered by H.P. Lovecraft to be the best supernatural tale in English literature.

I like the implication that the Color wasn't even necessarily a hostile force. It just wanted fuel to go home. Unfortunately, it's so alien to us that it pays no mind to the fact it's using living beings as fuel.
I like to think the colour doesnt even comprehend the idea of hostile and non hostile or uman ideas in general jsut doing what it does. jsut how a bear doesnt have a concept of empathy when eating a baby deer alive.
I can appreciate the fact that the color “unlike any seen on earth” is magenta (Yes, I know that magenta isn’t technically a real color, that’s why I can appreciate it)
You know a lot of people see Nathan’s freak out in the car as only another glorious Nick Cage moment (and don’t get me wrong; it totally is), but I think what made this freak out work so well is the true feeling of impotent helplessness that he expresses with it. You KNOW WHY he’s mad; he’s supposed to be the breadwinner, the man of the house, and yet with every passing moment more and more of his control over the things he knows crumbles into dust. I UNDERSTAND why he freaks out because, in all complete fairness, I’d probably do the exact same thing if I were in his position. It’s a freak out with REAL WEIGHT behind it, and in my opinion that’s what makes it all the more enjoyable and powerful.
I’ve been in a situation like that before. The helplessness really drove me to petulant rage. Lots of screaming, hitting the dash…not one of my prouder moments lol
Nathan shooting the monster that was his wife and son then exclaiming "they're not my family" feels like a moment of clarity in his corrupted mind to me. Like he snapped put of it just long enough to realize his family was suffering and he had to put them down.

Honestly, I've seen so many failed film and fan film attempts at making an even half decent adaptation of Lovecraftian stories. This was legitimately not a bad re-imagining of the Colour out of Space. It ended up being a really good Lovecraft film, even if the budget clearly set up some limitations. I'd be OK to see more adaptations of those stories to this level.
I felt like Annihilation, while not directly an adaptation, but clearly pulls some inspiration from Color Out Of Space, was a more subdued and better executed horror. I feel like Color Out of Space (the movie) could have been better...without Nic Cage. I couldn’t take him seriously for even one second.
I was also super happy with this adaptation. Nick Cage has his quirks, the story has its quirks, this adaptation isn't 100% perfect, but everything came together in a way that captured the feel and enough enjoyment. I couldn't ask for much more.
Elvis: Magenta is a type of color that humans can only perceive on a specific frequency and does not technically exist on a light spectrum. Also Elvis: He’s a hydrologist, he does water stuff
That's only half-correct. Magenta isn't on the colour spectrum. It is not a frequency of light. It exists only in the mind, as a result of seeing blue and red together. Computer-generated yellow is the same.
Yeah, he went in a quite a long rant (at least it felt like that) talking about the hydrologist being there for the water, and it felt like... yes, Elvis? This is what a hydrologist does? That's literally his job???
I mean he's not wrong? The color magenta itself doesn't exist on the spectrum blue and red are on opposite ends of the spectrum meaning they won't mix on the Spectrum to make magenta its just how our minds interpret seeing red and blue together he likely didn't know what a hydrologist is because it didn't interest him so he didn't bother looking too deep into it
When he said “indie horror”, all I could think was Outlast, and now I want an outlast movie where Nick Cage plays either Dr. Traeger, Chris Walker, or Miles, or all three. Or the priest. I don’t really care, I just need Nick Cage to appear in an Outlast movie.
The most Nic Cage moment actually happened to Nic Cage: A random naked guy just happily eating a popcicle in front of him not even realizing he was there.
I'm loving the whole idea of making a trilogy out of these stories, and it sounds like Stanley picked the perfect way to do it. G-spot. Because its a pussycat.
They bought a hydrologist cause hydrologists also have some working and studying experience regarding the wider subject of geology. Given that they live in a remote area, it's obvious the police would take him instead of wasting time waiting for an actual geologist to come by.

@@user-wy5rs2zj6u I think people don't talk nearly enough about Lovecraft's growth over the course of his tragically short life. In one of his letters, he basically says that he was embarrassed at the views he held when he was younger. He was disappointed with The Shadow Over Innsmouth, thinking that its themes were a return to views he no longer held. He started out heavily xenophobic and racist, but that isn't how he was at the end.
@@impartialthrone2097 A lot of it was also, as with most fucked up people, caused or at least helped along by his mother. He was very xenophobic and racist, but he was just generally scared of people as well, he didn't really like to go outside. But there was a lot of contradiction about him as well, for example his wife was Jewish, and 1 of his cousins I think it was that he was very close with was gay, which he knew about but still was his friend. Theres also the fact though that his fear of others is what helped him write these stories, as they are essentially his fears basically everything outside his home, and more so things further afield he knew nothing of. Yes it doesn't in any way excuse how racist he was, like racist to the point that even people of the times thought he was extreme, but without being fucked up like he was we likely wouldn't have gotten these stories.

For those who haven't read the story, I'd like to elaborate a bit more. 1. The name Nahum is pronounced as far as i know like "mayhem" but with an n instead of m. So Nathan is pretty close. 2. Lavinia the witchy girl is the daughter of Old Guy Watley in that Yogsothoth story, the dunwich horror. This was a nod to that Lavinia. Also the Necronomicon, a fictional lovecraftian book of supernatural power, plays a big role in that particular story. As does the Miskatonic university in most lovecraftian stories, including Re-animator. 3. In the story they were looking for a place to build a water reservoir and the blasted heath was a possible spot, but after hearing the story the protagonist vows to never drink water from that reservoir.
Regarding the hydrologist: I'm studying geology and I was also thinking about starting my career as a hydrogeologist. A theory why I got asked by the police would be, that he may happens to be a PHD in geology with a specialisation in hydrogeology and he was around the city for researches for his PHD which the police got informed of, because he maybe needs access to watersupplies of the city. It makes sense that they asked him since he probably also got some knowledge about rocks from space, since thats also part of your studies.
I think this is the first and only review I've seen that points out how Nicolas Cage's character starts to embody the father he hates. It's a great detail that really informs the character that so few people seem to notice because "Lol, he a meme." While he is a goofy actor and a funny person, I think he's a way better actor than most folks give him credit.
Honestly, he is a great actor. It's just that he's usually in mediocre movies. Partly it's because Nic is hurting for cash, having made some crazy purchases in his day, and also because he just likes keeping himself working. He has an odd view of acting, but I feel like it's in the same way some painters view their own art. In short, he is definitely an oddity, but I respect him.
He has brought back his character from "Vampires Kiss". His accent & antics in that movie brightens my day. Vampires kiss is his most eccentric role. I model my own character design and catch phrases off of him. He's a grand jester full of endless outlandish charms.
The Lama abomination and the Daughter and son abomination was very The Thing reminiscent. And The Thing is very Lovecraft inspired so weve gone full circle.
The monster mass in the back of the hunters truck was not the alpacas. It was a random assortment of animals in the forest near the farm that the hunter had found. Obviously it was not normal so he brought it to the sheriff. I’m pretty sure the hippie dudes cat was also apart of the mass. So the color was not just affecting the farm but the entire forested region around it doing its crazy mutation thing to every animal in the area that was infected from drinking any water or eating any vegetation that was contaminated.
idk if it’s actually his cat or some stray but Im pretty sure the hunter guy says there is a cat corpse in there as well. I just figured it was the hippies cat and when they see the cat on the way back from the hospital I just figured it was the color messing with time. Ward (or at least the character Movie Ward stands in for) wasn't a random guy in the book, he was a land surveyor. I was fortune enough to once work with Nick Cage, on a film up in Vancouver. I was just an extra, but myself and two others were selected to sit with him at a poker table at a casino scene for just a quick scene. This is a late comment but I think the whole "smell" thing is because the meteor always affects one of the five senses. Ward and Lavinia hallucinate (vision), Theresa cuts off her fingers (touch), Jack and his brother are affected by noise (hearing), and Nathan and the animals are sensitive to smell. Also, what Cage meant by "I borrowed inspiration from playing Loew in Vampire's Kiss" is that Loew's weird accent and mannerisms are strongly based on Cage's on father, who was a very posh publisher and not exactly a great dad. Cage had always been a "punk rocker" type and hadn't received any support from his dad, who divorced his mother when he was a kid. Apparently his dad is something of a sensitive topic for him, but if he's asked to channel an abusive father and his first thought is to emulate his father, then it sounds like his father had been plain abusive, and the outbursts from this film and in Vampire's Kiss may be an imitation of his dad's violent outbursts. At any rate, I'm glad I eventually got around to watching this review of yours -- I had no idea it's a Lovecraftian adaptation, and it looks awesome! I'm defs going to look into it! Also, I agree that Cage's forte lies in indie (horror) films. His off-beat and indie films have always been my favorite ones -- Vampire's Kiss and Birdy first and foremost. I thought that as well since the first time I saw Annihilation. I think it's one of the best on-screen depictions of cosmic horror ever. I love that movie.
The movie was apparently not meant to be an adaptation of the book, so much as an attempt to convey the basic feeling the director got from reading it. He started working on the script before the first book's sequels came out, and deliberately avoided reading them until the script was finished.
I'm strangely okay with that method actually, though mostly because I really like the movie that came from it, but I feel like...... well the feel, is what most adaptations lose, so I appreciate that part being given the focus. 2:38 I must say, Lovecraft is actually very correct about this! It is, in fact, very, very implausible that a being from outer space, with a completely different evolutionary path, adapted to a completely different atmosphere from ours, would look anything like something we have here on earth, much less like a human being. If y'all are interested, I suggest You watch Trey the Explainer's video on scientifically plausible aliens. Yeah, Nick Cage is actually a pretty good actor when he’s given proper direction.
He needs guidance as to when he should release the crazy, and keep it subdued. It’s rare to find a director that understands this, it’s even rarer to find one who can do it properly.
@@jacklandismusic He’s great in Mandy.

And his name is Torrance.
His freak out in Mandy is at first glance another Nic Cage freakout, but it matches the movie perfectly!!
I'm pretty sure that most drivers can relate to the car freakout... cars bring out the worst in people haha
I’ve been in a situation like that before. The helplessness really drove me to petulant rage. Lots of screaming, hitting the dash…not one of my prouder moments lol
The uh, car, is not happening
And that's why we have powerbank jumper cables 😸
Nathan shooting the monster that was his wife and son then exclaiming "they're not my family" feels like a moment of clarity in his corrupted mind to me. Like he snapped put of it just long enough to realize his family was suffering and he had to put them down.
Also surprised you didn't mention Tommy Chong considering you like weed. I felt like he was a cool addition to the film

The fact they even slightly pulled it off, and with so much style, is very impressive.
I think they're doing one of the Dunwich Horror next, Stanley has said he plans to do a trilogy
Yes! Thank you! Best lovecraft film adaptation tho: Call of Cthulhu (2005 version). I actually saw it when it was a student film release at UCSB
Like modern Action movies with their science Nonsense just for worldbuilding whilst just ignoring basic facts of life.
I mean he's not wrong? The color magenta itself doesn't exist on the spectrum blue and red are on opposite ends of the spectrum meaning they won't mix on the Spectrum to make magenta its just how our minds interpret seeing red and blue together he likely didn't know what a hydrologist is because it didn't interest him so he didn't bother looking too deep into it
That's cool that magenta is just a made up color in our mind.

Glad to see him return to form with the genre!
Wow. Ward, the first black man to survive a horror movie.
What about Get Out?

New in here?
Goddamn guys it’s a joke
@@yanan7801 Good one.
''Blasted heath'' sounds like something you would find in Dark souls
It’s what I call Taco Bell restrooms
@@ZimothydaAlien wait, the blasted heath is super dry ash, I'd expect wetness from a Taco Bell restroom. I can't even begin to wrap my brain around that concept, it's enough to drive a man mad.
The little boy in the movie is also in the haunting of hill house lol his parents found him a genre apparently
I honestly hope they re-use the whole cast for the next movie. They all played their roles well.
I'm starting to feel like Annihilation was a low key attempt at adapting this short story as well, which just makes me both like Annihilation that much more, and makes me want to see this movie way more as well!
(Yes, I know Annihilation is based on it's own book trilogy, but I've also been told the movie is crazy removed from the actual books)
i rly liked annihilation
To me this film felt like annihilation crossed with the mist crossed with hereditary
Also as a somewhat unrelated side note, I finally saw the movie this video is about, was also fantastic!
I'm surprised there was no shoutout or even acknowledgment of Tommy Chong playing Ezra, I thought it was great to see him.
I was waiting for it too
I thought the smell affectived
him because it smelled like a hospital, since his wife had cancer and it reminded him of the time he spent there visiting her
It reminded him more of his father dying of cancer. But that's only one occasion. On another he said it smelled like the dog.
@@ShootMeMovieReviews Could be that he smelled death. The Color was literally death in the end, for everyone. He could also have been smelling the dog's rotting remains, as the Color's rock twists time and space, and we know the dog somehow jumped down in the well. :/
Looks like elvis is expressing his homeworlds culture.
Again
Just thought I’d say something about the COTW diamond crest that is your pfp. A man of culture I see
@@zepfan9993 just thought I would say something about the beautiful man as your icon, a fellow man of culture I see.
some A.I with internet access ah. I see you also know of Shrek Rick Harrison.

Yassssss I was looking in the comments for an OSP reference!
i didn't know youtube comments can have sound
2:38 I must say, Lovecraft is actually very correct about this!
It is, in fact, very, very implausible that a being from outer space, with a completely different evolutionary path, adapted to a completely different atmosphere from ours, would look anything like something we have here on earth, much less like a human being.
If y'all are interested, I suggest You watch Trey the Explainer's video on scientifically plausible aliens.
He talks about the origin of the Gray Aliens, like how they were actually supposed to represent humans from the future and not aliens at all, and what an actual alien would look like.
And then shows examples of scientifically plausible aliens in mainstream culture, like the Xenomorphs, Lovecraftian monsters of course, and all the creatures seen in the Avatar movie (except for the Navi, obviously)
It's very interesting :)
(Sorry if my english is kinda wonky, my native language is Spanish)
It's ironic that Elvis told us to look up the name of H.P. Lovecraft's cat, because now it's a meme. Elvis really is an alien, he brought that joke from the future!
dude colin stetson is an amazing composer, he did Hereditary and RDR2. he's also doing the new Uzumaki anime this year.
Do you mean Naruto/Boruto or Junji Ito's "Uzumaki"
low-effort idiot junji itos Uzumaki obviously, but it sadly comes out next year instead of this year. Its obvious why
Hereditary was amazing!
Nic cage is an awesome actor exactly because he has starred in so many different roles and in so many different films, from Hollywood AAA movies to small indie films. He has done it all and owns every role he was in. This by itself shows how much he loves his craft and the art of cinema. The guy has a passion for films that few moviemakers have.
Also, Richard Stanley is a great and very original filmmaker, he should be given a lot more projects and a huge creative freedom with them.
I love watching you talk about the stuff you are passionate about, whenever I rewatch this I feel the joy you radiate and this vid is my go to when Im in a bad mood
