I have a theory that Nick Cage is actually a genius. Somewhere during his earlier career he realized that he could be a great actor, and people would maybe remember him for a while, or he could become “Nick Cage!” and people would remember him forever. Gotta say it’s an effective strategy.

I really like the detail you added about magenta; it added some insight about their choice in using it. I always thought they chose it because that particular shade is kind of eerie and aggressive, but it makes way more sense and is more effective when you know that magenta "doesn't exist" and is consequently the only way the characters and the audience can perceive the "Color" in the movie.

You know a lot of people see Nathan’s freak out in the car as only another glorious Nick Cage moment (and don’t get me wrong; it totally is), but I think what made this freak out work so well is the true feeling of impotent helplessness that he expresses with it. You KNOW WHY he’s mad; he’s supposed to be the breadwinner, the man of the house, and yet with every passing moment more and more of his control over the things he knows crumbles into dust. I UNDERSTAND why he freaks out because, in all complete fairness, I’d probably do the exact same thing if I were in his position. It’s a freak out with REAL WEIGHT behind it, and in my opinion that’s what makes it all the more enjoyable and powerful.

Honestly, I've seen so many failed film and fan film attempts at making an even half decent adaptation of Lovecraftian stories. This was legitimately not a bad re-imagining of the Colour out of Space. It ended up being a really good Lovecraft film, even if the budget clearly set up some limitations. I'd be OK to see more adaptations of those stories to this level.

    1. The name Nahum is pronounced as far as i know like "mayhem" but with an n instead of m. So Nathan is pretty close.
    2. Lavinia the witchy girl is the daughter of Old Guy Watley in that Yogsothoth story, the dunwich horror. This was a nod to that Lavinia. Also the Necronomicon, a fictional lovecraftian book of supernatural power, plays a big role in that particular story. As does the Miskatonic university in most lovecraftian stories, including Re-animator.
    3. In the story they were looking for a place to build a water reservoir and the blasted heath was a possible spot, but after hearing the story the protagonist vows to never drink water from that reservoir.

I was fortune enough to once work with Nick Cage, on a film up in Vancouver. I was just an extra, but myself and two others were selected to sit with him at a poker table at a casino scene for just a quick scene. Quick but it took like 5 hours to film it and Nick Cage was on set the whole time. Despite his reputation as being a bit crazy, he's seriously down to Earth and such a nice guy. He really was far more ordinary and approachable than I ever expected and was talking to everyone, extras included with no pretentious attitude at all while there were dull moments when they were doing lighting or something.

This is a late comment but I think the whole "smell" thing is because the meteor always affects one of the five senses. Ward and Lavinia hallucinate (vision), Theresa cuts off her fingers (touch), Jack and his brother are affected by noise (hearing), and Nathan and the animals are sensitive to smell.
Also, what Cage meant by "I borrowed inspiration from playing Loew in Vampire's Kiss" is that Loew's weird accent and mannerisms are strongly based on Cage's on father, who was a very posh publisher and not exactly a great dad. Cage had always been a "punk rocker" type and hadn't received any support from his dad, who divorced his mother when he was a kid. Apparently his dad is something of a sensitive topic for him, but if he's asked to channel an abusive father and his first thought is to emulate his father, then it sounds like his father had been plain abusive, and the outbursts from this film and in Vampire's Kiss may be an imitation of his dad's violent outbursts.
At any rate, I'm glad I eventually got around to watching this review of yours -- I had no idea it's a Lovecraftian adaptation, and it looks awesome! I'm defs going to look into it! Also, I agree that Cage's forte lies in indie (horror) films. His off-beat and indie films have always been my favorite ones -- Vampire's Kiss and Birdy first and foremost. Glad to see him return to form with the genre!

2:38 I must say, Lovecraft is actually very correct about this!
It is, in fact, very, very implausible that a being from outer space, with a completely different evolutionary path, adapted to a completely different atmosphere from ours, would look anything like something we have here on earth, much less like a human being.
If y'all are interested, I suggest You watch Trey the Explainer's video on scientifically plausible aliens.
He talks about the origin of the Gray Aliens, like how they were actually supposed to represent humans from the future and not aliens at all, and what an actual alien would look like.
And then shows examples of scientifically plausible aliens in mainstream culture, like the Xenomorphs, Lovecraftian monsters of course, and all the creatures seen in the Avatar movie (except for the Navi, obviously)
