  • Well we have FINALLY arrived at Peter Hammill's solo work... and it's a VDGG song basically LOL but man, was this not a perfect track for Pawn Hearts?? Wow. This was fantastic. I expected nothing less but damn, did they have to go so hard? Peter was an absolute star, belting his soul out, on this track. I the love and fear the places he can take you. Thank you to our patron Lars for choosing this as his patreon request for the month. Fantastic.

Wohoo! Finally, can't wait to see your reaction to it. There is a life performance of this song on youtube from 1974, with only PH and a piano. When I first found it, I thought it would be too empty, but PH nailed it alone with the piano. You should check it out!

that live show really shows off Hammill's ability to entrance you with just a piano! the band adds so much but there's just something about raw unfiltered Hammill!
I can imagine people seeing it on TV by accident 50 years ago 😂👀

I saw Hammill playing alone, or in duo, he is always amazing. Even finishing a concert with an accapella song without mic.

So pleased to find you had come across this. :)
The louse is the brain. He's looking at who/what is actually in charge of him, a similar theme in a way to Man-Erg.
Randy California is a real name - well, kind of. He was the founder of the band Spirit - another band you should listen to - and he got given his name by Jimi Hendrix. Basically there were two guys named Randy playing with Hendrix at the time so they were referred to by their state of origin - hence Randy California.
Try these from Spirit if you like. Twelve Dreams is the album and it's astonishingly good.

''The Lie'' from ''The Silent Corner and the Empty Stage'' is also incredibly dramatic and earth shatteringly powerful. A must for lovers of his unique lyrics and vocal bravado.

Hammill just vivesects himself with this song. This is MASTERPIECE of freaking genius. One of the best prog tracks and... no even one note by guitar. Awesome. PH is way, way the best prog vocalist on the Earth.

Relisten this song someday reading the lyrics, my opinion it is the strongest part of this song, it's freaking genius!
UPD: this song is about searching home in this world where you belong, where you feel calm and safe. Home is not always the plqce where you live, it's psychological concept where you can finally feel yourself relaxed. Peter describes the feeling of not being in your "home" as being watched by some kind of watxher who doesn't let you live freely. He also describes different types of people and how someone finds their home in completely different things: church, work, etc. In general the lyrics is really worth of deep dive into it. Thanks for the reaction

the harmonies are Peter with himself. lots of times there will be multiple characters almost.
it goes with the identity themes! at the end theres a whole chorus of Peters 😁
the drums at the end of the song have got to be electric. thats one of my favorite drum parts because the electronic sound elevates the song even more somehow.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I always thought that was just acoustic drums with the tape sped up. Gentle Giant did something similar on "Knots".

Someone else recommend a song from in camera. I'd also recommend "Gog" from the same album, his singing is crazy on that (and on the live recordings we have from the 70s of it, even crazier live, too bad it's all bootleg quality).

  • @PaulMDove2
    @PaulMDove2 4 месяца назад +3

You're right Lee you should listen to some Peter Hammill that's not VDGG cross over. Some of my favourite PH songs are cross overs - Flight, (In The) Black Room, Louse is not a Home, and a lot of my favourite PH album Over.
So, given you want to hear some real solo PH, from the 70s what about something from In Camera or The Future Now - (No More) The Sub-Mariner - or from this century what about a song that always brings a tear to my eye - Once You Called Me - from the Clutch album.

Totally unique delivery. VDG were a great band. 'The Least We Can Do is to Wave to Each Other is brilliant' . Refugees and White Hammer are excellent, Refufees, surely, the only song to mention 'Malleus Maleficarem'. Am I wrong?

Yep, Hammill goes straight to the point. (Or the epicentre of pain, to phrase it another way.) I was completely blown away by this song when I first heard it, at age seventeen (and I guess it helped me decide not to "maybe my life away"). Do check out his "Architecture" (from the Fall of the House of Usher opera) for some even more spooky houses and voice gymnastics. :-)

Aren't most of Hammill's songs about identity? And existential dread. Kind of...?
Randy California was a pretty interesting guitarist tutored by Jimi Hendrix for a while when he was a teenager and the leader of Spirit (a 60s/70s band you will hopefully check out at some point).

One of Hammill's problems is he has so much music released (50+albums) it is difficult for a first time listener to find the highlight tracks so as a long time follower I posted a user friendly 3 volume Best of Peter Hammill playlist to RUclips. Louse is no 4 in the first volume. The channel is under the name of Yrret Ksif.
