  • Empty old Inn in a small town in the high side of Algarve, near Monchique.
There are many empty and abandoned buildings in the region, due to local population decline (moving to the coast, bigger cities, and abroad)
Ironically, nowadays, the new residents are almost all foreigners looking for a place in the sunny, quiet corner of Europe

I don’t know why but there’s something about ruins that are intriguing to me. My brother said he wants something new and doesn’t like the old stone houses in Portugal, but I wouldn’t buy something new.

Well, they say when you rebuild a house or something, you're building a house but you have a house on the way. And in Portugal, unfortunately, we don't have much the culture of keeping old things in shape. We just build new ones next to the old ones (terrible practice IMO). The meteorological tower in top of Serra da Estrela is such a great example it's almost an archetype of this mentality here..
Anyways, keep in mind: the construction quality is terrible in Portugal (read somewhere the worst or 2nd worst in Europe). If you build, at least you might have some control over the quality.
