- My tips for learning violin in 2024 are quite simple.
1. Get a nice violin

3. Get a great community of musicians around you

Excellent advice! As a late starter who has enjoyed 6o years of viola and violin, I have two more suggestions. (1) If you're just starting out, make a contract with yourself that you'll stay with it for a year, no matter how discouraged you get. (2) Be sure your days allow for a regular practice time ... and stay with it, even if some days you can manage only 15 minutes. And see Corrie's excellent video on how to practice. Good luck!

A few years ago I bought a cheap banjo and tried to teach myself. I eventually gave up cause the sound was not good.
I learned my lesson and when I decided to try to learn to play the fiddle, I purchased a violin that was not a beginner model

Hi Corrie,I'm from Australia. Living your channel .I have stentor violin that I've had for almost 20 years.
Looking to upgrade .Do you have a few recommendations of some violins that you like.How much would you spend on a decent violin?

I would spend around $1000 for a decent violin. See if you have a local violin shop, go try everything they have in your price range. See if any of them really are your favorite. You have to love the sound under your ear too! Since there’s no “violin brands” there’s only makers, it’s hard to know what your shop will have. Just try them and then google the maker to see what you can find out about them.

Best way to learn violin in 2024 is to start in 2014.
The second best way is to start now!
I bought my violin privately, knowing nothing about violins, how to play et al, and lucked out (got lucky). They were an older couple, lovely and friendly, told me how the lady had played it in an orchestra in Czechoslovakia when young but, through age and infirmity, couldn't play anymore and were very happy it was going to a complete (violin ) beginner, and they only asked $ 200.00au for it, about three decades ago.
I had my first lesson, and my teacher, tuning it up said 'Ooow, it's a lovely sounding violing. Me: "Really, it only cost me $200.00. Her: "Are you sure it wasn't stolen?" Me: Is it that good?".Her: I'd put it about -$3 - 5000.00au. or so, maybe. I told her of the lovely older couple and their lovely house and, No, I didn't think it stolen. Nevertheless, later the following day I chose to phone (1990s remember) the Police and ask had a violin recently been stolen here or somewhere closish by? No, was their answer, after looking, and even putting up flyers etc, I came to the conclusion that I just 'Lucked out' so to speak.
I've often thought of that day (my introduction to the violin world) and transaction and though I'm close to 100% sure it's not stolen I did what I could to find out and have played now at up to 6-8 grade AMEB and play some lovely music on that fiddle. I really think we'll be together 'til the end. The instrument is everything !!

My student violin has wolf tone (C sharp) on A and D string. I purchased some cheap wolf tone eliminators from Aliexpress that you put on string after-length and tried to apply them. Not sure if they work though or I'm doing something wrong as I don't see wolf tone dissapearing, maybe I did not experiment enough with their proper position. Have you ever used them and can attest they work?
So funny I have the same exact wolf on my violin on every C#. So fun 😑
On cello, a wolf eliminator works much more effectively. I’ve never found them to really be much help on any violin I’ve ever had. So I don’t even use them anymore. I’ve learned how to lessen it with bow/finger pressure and intonation tricks. That’s about it. I found I actually never had any issues with wolfs until I got to more expensive violins. Who knew haha Good luck!!
@@Corrietheviolinist Same I was surprised that my previous $100 violin did not have wolfs on D and A string but only on G. When I bought next one for $1000 I thought there would be no issues at all, I had doubts if I made mistake and bought a faulty one. But if you say that expensive ones as yours have wolf tones too then it gives me relief that its common. Playing with bow further from bridge helps to control it but I would love to free my concious fully from compensations whenever I play close to c sharp. Buying stiffer bridge and more responsive strongss made it even easier to tame it but its still there if I dont compensate. Maybe some adjustments in soundpost would do the trick as my last try of dealing with it completely.
@@pianodesu Sure! Those tricks can work! I tried stronger strings as well but didn't enjoy playing on them and did have my soundpost moved but it made mine so much worse. (every violin is different) I struggled with it so much in the beginning and almost returned my ($20k+) violin. But at this point, 15 years later, I don't even think about it.
