- Best Tip To Set A Seam Allowance On Your Machine - It's A Game-Changer!
#dressmaking #handmadewardrobe #sewingvlog
In this sewing video, I am sharing with you a game-changer for me in working out my seam allowances on my sewing machine. I was forever using a ruler or sticking washi tape to the needle plate as my guide but this easy and simple trick will transform your sewing, believe me! I'm sure its the same setting for all machines .......
The settings I use on my Brother machine with the presser foot against the edge of the fabric are:
Stitch width
00 = 1/2 inch seam allowance
2.0 = 3/8 inch
5.5 = 1/4 inch
7.0 = 3/16 in
Try these settings on your machine and let me know how you get on.

OMG! I had no idea! I have tried EVERYTHING to get 1/4” seam allowance. Thank you so much.
I’ve tried this and it worked, you don’t know how happy I am 😅 I am beginner sewer and was struggling so hard to figure out the allowances ❤
I have been doing this for years and just assumed others were too. Glad you shared the tip so that everyone could see how wonderful this trick is.
Yes, so have I. I thought everyone would know.
Same here.
Subscribed for this alone! Top tip 👍😊
Wow, right under my nose all these years and I never thought of it! Thanks so much for sharing! 👍😊💐
Glad it was helpful!
I have a new machine similar to yours so your tutorial was quite easy to follow. I’ve not used the memory settings yet, so this is a great place to start. Thanks so much 🤩
This video saved me so much frustration. I just bought a Brother sewing machine. I know the basics of sewing, not much else. Thank you.
You are so welcome!
Thank you! As a newbie this is my biggest hurdle and headache. I find myself watching the plate so closely that my fabric starts traveling away from my intended point. This is such an amazing tip. ❤
You are so welcome!
Wow! Game changer!! I had no idea. Thank you!!! Mind blown haha
Right!!!
I've sewed for years and didn't know this. Thank you so much.
You! You have just made my sewing experience so much better!!! This legitimately changes everything!!! No more markers! No more tape! No more guess work!!! All the thank yous!!!!
My pleasure xx
Brilliant haha who knew! Not me!!! 🤷🏻♀️🤣✌️ thanks so much!!
You're welcome!!
I have done every one of those things you mentioned so I was eager to see what you would say...... mind blown 🤯... I have never thought to use my stitch width for straight stitches. Definitely a game changer!! Thank you!!!! 😁
I told a friend to move her needle to the right until she had ¼" from the needle and the edge of the pressure foot once. She told me that her machine doesn't do that.
The next time I was at her house, I showed her how to use the stitch width button. She hadn't even kniwn what that button was for. Never opened the user manual.
@@ellenhofer3343 That's hilarious.
@@ellenhofer3343 I tried it but mine was doing the zig zag stitch instead of a straight stitch. Can't figure it out
I think mine does zig zag too when I alter width. Don't understand this at all!!!
Thank you, you're right - it's a game changer - many thanks for sharing.
OH WOW! GAME CHANGER! Thank You 🇨🇦
Wow, I have never thought to use the width now I will practice this. Thank you.
You’re welcome 😊
AMAZING! All these years & this is the first time I've heard this tip. Thank you so much.
That’s fantastic! I’m a blind sewer and you’re right, those magnets are ok, but this is so so good. Thank you.
I found this invaluable for sewing doll clothes with a 1/4" seam, especially when I was sewing a curved bodice piece onto a straight piece and really needed to squeeze a line of stay stitching in there (silk satin) 😬 I'm so happy to not only understand my new electronic machine better but be a more competent seamstress as well! Thanks a million; you're a real lifesaver 🤗
A 5.6 on my Juki HZL F-300 seems to have done the trick (no 5.5 setting) thank you. I’m a beginner quilter and that 1/4 inch allowance has been so allusive. I was starting to think I just sucked at it. I don’t remember anything from Home Economics class (I’m 51) so I appreciate this tip very much!
That’s great. I’ve sewn for years and didn’t know this 🙀 Thank you so much for sharing
You just saved me such a headache! Thank you so much for putting this video together, my project just became so much easier!
Wow, thanks for the tip. I can’t wait to try it out. Just a suggestion for future videos, it’d be easier to see if you used contrasting thread and fabric. Thanks!
Wow! Grand idea!
This is the best tip I’ve seen in a long time ANYWHERE! Thank you so much for sharing! Who knew??
My pleasure xx
This is why I hit subscribe. She was clear in the instructions. The camera was focused and gave a close up of where to line the presser foot up with the fabric. The instruction card was clear as to what I was looking at. If you started a school, I’m showing up online in the discussion board everyday. I have looked up online sewing schools. You can’t find an online sewing school that is completely online. I found only 1. And the other schools want you to go back to high school first by doing prerequisite classes. I would definitely support.
Thank you
wow, just discovered this after owning my machine for over 5 years, thank you
You are welcome!
OMG! This is genius. I really struggle with this. You have made my day. I am so glad this came up in my RUclips feed.
My pleasure xx
O my gosh thank you so very much. You are so smart.
Oh, my goodness! This is wonderful. Thank you, thank you!! 🙏🏻 morning thank
Oh my goodness!! Thank you for this - you don't know the headache you saved me!
This is actually a good idea. I always have trouble following the seam guides, as they are generally underneath the fabric. The 1/2" seam falls right there on the edge of the foot, which makes it so easy. I'm going to figure out how to get the others to land there also. Thanks for the tip!
I have a “Vintage ” Singer Stylist 513 (the machine is a part of me, I have had it since 1972) so I don’t have access to those numbers, BUT I can move my needle left, right and center to sew zippers. Your video did provoke me to find out what the stitch widths were when I moved the needle. So yes, it was helpful, thank you!
Oh.. my... Gosh!
I'm new to sewing & I never knew that the needle could move position... This IS a game changer!!! Thank you!
Your welcome 🤗
My Brother has a built in 1/4 guide but I have not used it. I use a 1/4 sewing foot for it. I sew a lot of bags with faux leather, so needed this tutorial. Thanks a lot.
My pleasure xx
Oh my soul...maybe I should've read my manual. This is priceless.
Its amazing isn't it .... wish I found this out years ago too ... hope it helps in your sewing xxx
@@TheDressmakersCloset it already has🥰. I don't understand the markings on my machine's plate but this method works great!
You are right my 1/4” seam allowance is 5.5! Took a lot of heartache and frustration to figure this out over 2 years ago!!
I can never really see those markings on the plate and it's been frustrating. THANK YOU TONS! This truly IS a game changer!!!
You are so welcome!
one of the most helpful tips I seen in a good while
My pleasure xx
Ok mind blown!! Thank you so much for sharing this information! I’ve used tape, I have the quarter inch foot attachment, which I dislike, and I have the magnetic thing which is a pain! Thank you thank you!!
You are so welcome!
Thank you! I hadn’t sewed in years and the machine I had used then didn’t have the ability to shift the needle position like this. I used my new machine for the first time a couple of days ago and couldn’t understand why the needle was so far left while the seam guide was on the right, totally throwing off the seam measurements. So thank you!
You are so welcome!
@@TheDressmakersClosetis that a brother machine? Same is happening to me. My needle position is far left by default
Thank you so much! Just starting out so all tips and tricks are welcome! Lesley xx
OMG! That’s brilliant; thank you so much! You are such a lovely and charming person; it is a joy to watch you videos.
Ok, that is worth the price of admission for sure! Brilliant! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Definitely a game-changer. This is a fabulous tip, thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
BRILLIANT !!! 👍👍
This is an excellent tip I had no idea. Thank you!
You are so welcome!
My mind is blown 🤯! Thank you for sharing this!
I'm very new to sewing, so I RUclips seam allowance your video has made it clear what an seam allowance means. I've had my brother se600 for about a month now still learning.
What an amazing tip! I have always struggled trying to get the correct seam allowance and you have resolved my problem in a blink of the eye, LOL. Thank you so very much.
Wow an absolute game changer. Didn't realise the stitch width changed the position of the needle. Thank you so much for this tip. It has helped me tremendously.
Glad it was helpful!
I ran right downstairs to my cheap Brother sewing machine and this works! I cannot believe I didn't know this! Thank you!
You're welcome!!
WOW! What a game changer, thank you soooo very much!!!
I know it’s brilliant isn’t it 👏🏻 my pleasure xx
I am blown away! Most valuable thing I’ve learned on RUclips. I’ve tried tape, etc....all frustrating. This adjustment of 5.5 for an accurate 1/4” seam allowance works perfectly! Thank you!
You're very welcome!
Oh my goodness. I was searching everywhere on RUclips to find how to do a 1/4 inch stitch away from another stitch and all I could find is on quilting, I am so glad I found yours amongst the others. Wow it really is a game changer. Thank you so much for making a video on this. I truly appreciate it. I am trying to top stitch a market tote for my grandson for Christmas and it means so much to me to get it right. thank You!❤❤
You are so welcome!
Well I never knew about this trick at all! I have learnt lots of tips and tricks with sewing over the past year or two from watching RUclips and never knew about this one. Thank you so much for sharing this.
You are so welcome!
This is brilliant. I do have challenges following the seam allowance guide on the metal plate. Thank you!
As someone who just started sewing in August of this year, and who has already figured out that you can use the width on the straight stitch to move the needle and change the seam allowance, I am feeling pretty proud of myself reading these comments.
BRILLIANT!!!! 🎉. Can not wait to get home and try this!
Hope you enjoy!
You are brilliant ! As a new sewer it’s fabulous!
You’re welcome ☺️
I’ve actually given thought to this in the past when I was attempting to set up my stitch width, I can’t tell where the numbers are on my plate. I have a 1/4” foot that I use for just about everything but when I’m attempting to sew something like a quilt border I’d always line my fabric up with my presser foot and just move the needle so it’s closer to where I want it to stitch. I like the idea of actually knowing the distance so I can sew something more accurately. I’m beginner and I’m still trying to figure out when to pivot at the corners accurately. I’d also like to figure out how to get 1/8” seam using this genius technique. This is going to be such a huge game changer and I wish I had come across it sooner. I’ve been watching thousands of hours on RUclips of sewing tips and tricks for beginners and just by luck your video shows up out of nowhere. I’m so excited to try this, I even took a screenshot of your cheat sheet. If you know how to set up for 1/8” I’d surely appreciate you sharing it with me.
Thanks a million for sharing this genius technique and I’m excited about watching your other videos.
I’m curious about 1/8 inch as well 😊😊
Just tried this.....absolutely fantastic....many thanks ......great help for quilting seams just starting out, so should make a great difference....thanks again.
Glad it was helpful!
This is definitely a game changer for me! I struggle so bad keeping my seams aligned correctly!!! Thank you for this tip!
You are so welcome!
Any idea on the settings for the Janome 6700? I haven’t figured this out on my new machine.
Excellent! I’ve always made clothing, but now I’m into quilting and need a 1/4 inch seam allowance. I started sewing when I was 5, with help of course. Now I’m 69 and feel stupid.. why didn’t I think of this? I’ve used a Singer , the same old Singer for 40 years. Then I got a newer Singer and now a Brother. I’ve searched all over for a solution.Thank you so much for making this needle position change so easy for me. My husband will be happy too, not having to listen to my vocal frustration. Again, Thank you so much.
I literally bought this exact same machine last week & was a bit flummoxed 😆
Thank you very much! Easy as 🤩
Omg 😳 every new sewer need this I’m a newbie
OMG …… THIS IS GENIUS!!!!! thanks so much for sharing 💖💖💖
You are so welcome!
Thank you so much! Such a simple, but brilliant tip! ❤
Excellent tip. Was hemming a tablecloth this weekend and used this technique. Beautiful stitching right on the edge. Another great machine feature I never used before. Thank you.
Wow real game changer can’t wait to try this thank you😊
OMG you're right, what a game changer, thanks so much. Take care.
You are so welcome
Great tip Jane. I also use my quilting guide bar attachment set at whatever width I require which helps in guiding the fabric.
Great tip!
I’ve done this for years. Love this trick!
Wow. I can't believe it. Thanks so much!
I just found you this evening. My sewing machine is put away now but you can bet tomorrow am I will give this a try. I am a quilter and 1/4" is needed. Thank you from Beverly on the Treasure Coast of Florida .
Just brilliant 🙌 TY!
I have been doing this and yes, it is a game changer. Thank you, thank you.
OMG!!! I have always struggled with my seam allowance. What an amazing little hack!! I can hardly wait to try this the next time I am sewing. So glad I ran across your video. Thank you so much.
You are so welcome!
Brilliant, thank you! One can also use the Left-Centre-Right control to move the needle either to the left or right of centre to accomplish something similar.
Thank you so much.. I’ve been trying to figure this out for a long time. I tried the sticky seam guides, I really appreciate this video
You're very welcome!
90% of the time I use the straight stitch needle plate, so I can’t use your technique - but it will definitely be helpful when I use the regular stitch plate. Thanks!
Thank you so much. I wanted a 1/4 inch foot for a Bernette machine I bought, love the machine but am having trouble buying the foot. This just solved that problem!
Thank you for the reminder to use the needle position button. I particularly love the little cheat sheet. I think if I had the sheet already done, I'd remember to use the button more often.
It works. Thank-you so much. I’m busy practicing now.
Wonderful!
Wow!! I'm in SHOCK!! 😱🤯
Maam you just changed my life omg thank you!!!!! it's crazy how many number of specific features our sewing machines were created with in mind and nothing is random but there are just hidden treasures in them I learn about all the time. I didn't know what the purpose of the width was. I guess it's not just for that purpose though I need to research that now! but yeah will be SO helpful for my 1/2 inch project that I've been struggling with.
My pleasure xx
Wow, why did I never figure this before? Thank you.
Wow! Thank you so much! IT IS A GAME CHANGER as you said!!!
You're welcome!
Brilliant, you have really helped me clarify my understanding of seam allowances, I really do struggle normally, hopefully not any longer, thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
How SMART you are!!!!!!!
I had purchased a new machine a few yrs ago. It was a couple of years later!! before I realized the machine had this function of moving the needle left or right. It is possible with one of the straight stitches selected, but not with a different straight stitch. I had read the owner's manual, but had somehow missed this. Very handy.
Thanks so much. Saved. I was using this but did not know the actual settings, never seemed to get it right. Definitely struggled with this. I will get right now. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
Definitely a game changer thanks.
My pleasure xx
That’s amazing I’m off to give it a go - thank you xx
This kind of no nonsense helpful sewing tip is precisely why I subscribed to your channel. Thankyou so very much!

Brain just exploded ! Thank you so much for this video - this is going to be a game changer

Can’t believe that I’d never thought of doing this🤪 but I will from now on, thank you so much. 👏
You’re welcome 😊
Definitely saving this I just bought a new sewing machine this will come in handy thank you so much
