Honestly if I was just starting out today, Gearwrench and Icon would be some of my first choices. They make a great ratchet that is strong and smooth. You got your entire career to upgrade and get the tools you find will work for you. When you are just starting, it’s all about stretching those dollars as far as you can in order to become productive and keep your bills paid. Once you have been working awhile, the tools you need to upgrade will start to let you know all by themselves.

@@eightpenny6379I researched, and there are like 150 tool makers in Taiwan. I think it's a myth that tools are all made in the same factory. I see real differences between Taiwan made tools. There is a big range of quality and manufacturing standards between them.

Coming on 2 year diesel tech and I use my gearwrench 120xp ratchets more than my snap on. Other day just used a pipe on my gearwrench 1/2 inch drive. Still just fine

I bought the 106 piece gearwrench set to have a decent set for full time small engine work. 2 years later still going without issue. Love the 90t, sockets have been great. Used the ratchet wrenches a million times before in the past and never had an issue. The magnetic spark plug sockets are a must have for small engine work as well.
I personally like the aesthetic of the 6 point chrome sockets in the 1/4 and 3/8 drive. They have a unique look to them. Plus the attention to detail in metric sockets having a knurled ring around the base and the sae having two machined grooves is a nice detail.

Gear Wrench dose have a locking flex head version on the 84 tooth and 90 tooth lines. It uses a similar lever lock style as Matco.

I guess, at the end of the day, money and personal taste dictate.
What can you afford? What is your taste? What are you willing to pay to get what you need/want? Can what you buy stand up to your level of use/abuse depending? Is a warranty worth your payout? Or do you break , toss and rebuy? Do you break and get something better or just break and rebuy the same stuff?

I understand that snap on has its value but which is more reliable: the snap on or two gear wrench? If I have to pay for it multiple times up front then I may as well have multiple units ceteris parabus.

You can always tell the Harbor Freight crowd in all the comment sections because they always bash Snap On in an attempt to make themselves feel better about their cheap Harbor Fright tools. If you can't afford Snap On fine, but all the Snap On bashing really gets old. This comment is aimed the Harbor Fright fan boys in the comment section not the video.

The best tools are those you can afford and still make a decent living. There is no reason to go into major debt just to have a massive tool box stuffed with whatever expensive tools just to be cool.

They are excellent quality but you pay alot for the service and prestige. A GW etc would work just as well especially with ratchets. I don't fault guys who buy snap on it's their money but hate to see young guys feel they need to go in debt and snap on is a necessity. It's not.

I think you just enjoy arguing with people rather than taking on board peoples comments. As I said, there's no denying snap on make excellent ratchets, but you seem to have fallen for the marketing bullshit that no longer stacks up. We all know every mechanic has backups for those daily use tools, including ratchets, sockets, and spanners. If people are willing to continue paying well over the odds when more reasonable alternatives have made their way to the marketplace and so widely available, that's their choice.

Your right but if you own Harbor Freight tools I don't want you working on my vehicles, then again I don't let anyone else work on my vehicles because to many people like you have cheap tools that damage fasteners, I will keep using my Snap On set and do the job right. I just had a new set of tires installed at Firestone on my wife's Mustang and I knew something was going to go wrong when I saw the rows of Harbor freight and Home Depot tool boxes and I was right the idiot who installed the valve stems did not have a valve stem installer tool and used a set of pliers damaging the threads on the all four valve stems. Mechanics who own Harbor Freight tools are the worst in the shop.

Almost any brand will work to get you started but you need to start upgrading one set at a time, start off upgrading your socket set and a couple of good Snap On ratchets, pay that off, not hard to do, when that is paid off upgrade your wrench set with a set of Snap On wrenches again pay that set off, it again is not hard to do, before you know it in 4 to 5 years you will have a complete set of Snap On tools all paid for and they will last you a life time.
