I got the 2024 ktm 390 duke 6 months ago, It is my 6th motorcycle and I think it might be my first keeper, so I totally can relate. When you begin riding motorcycles you quickly learn you might need two bikes for when one is in getting service. Similar to mountain bikes, I have two hardtails and I’m always looking to build a third😂 I have a 2007 ktm 990 superduke that I am ready to replace for a newer 1000cc naked bike, I think this Yamaha xsr900 checks all the boxes. I was leaning more to the ktm 990 duke but it is much more expensive and possibly less reliable then the Yamaha. Although the ktms are stepping it up in quality and reliability. People rave about Japanese bikes. I’ve only had triumph, ktm, Ducati.
Yep.. Full Power Upshifts is the Golden Goose.. Save like 1/2 second in the quarter mile. Is there any reason to downshift with positive engine power when you have the blipper to do that for you?
When i bought my xsr900 a friend of mine complained that it has to many electronics. Personally i think its great, that tiny safety net allows me todo wheelies at 72 years old. I love it.
Yamaha have played an absolute marketing blinder with that GP model. Perfect for the older weekend warrior with a loose wallet. I ride a push bike everywhere most days. Approsching that junction with the red van, I'd glance back over my right shoulder, move out to the centre of the road then cover the brakes and probably slow down a little (maybe even stand up on the pedals too) especially given the limited room available due to the oncoming vehicles. That way, red van man can get up to whatever myopic foolishness he wants but he won't affect me at all. If you're on two wheels, whether leg or petrol powered, you've no option but to anticipate *EVERYTHING* about any vehicle crossing situation as a potential threat to your well-being.
Enjoyed that. Like both, just bought the XSR900 rather than the GP because it will be more practical for everything really. Funny how for every RUclipsr who wants cruise another says why has it got it? Can’t win. It will be the first bike I’ve had with it and tbh due to the amount of average speed cameras literally everywhere it will be useful.
Great little side-by-side review of the two bikes. Good to hear the clip-ons are not wrist killers. XSRs sound fantastic with aftermarket exhausts .. Yoshimura or Kelpi are the bomb. Cheers.
That Yoshi exhaust makes it sound like my old MV Agusta Dragster RR with the HP Corse exhaust. LOVING THAT. I think I see an XSR GP with Yoshi and full fairing in my future.
I think this may have been skipped over, but it appears that the GP version gets the same upgraded KYB Forks with the high-speed compression adjuster on the bottom of the fork from the MT-09SP.
Whenever I see a rod closed sign I always ask myself "How closed is it really?" Usually not completely (especially on a bike), and sometimes not at all. Always worth having a go as long as you have a couple of neurons to rub together.
I had ‘original’ XSR900 back in 2016 - superb addictive triple - the GP colours are fab - but for £12k I’d say the MT09SP 2024 with upgraded brakes and suspension is surely a bargain in comparison? Now if only the new XSR also had brembos and ohlins …
I’d still add an aftermarket bikini fairing on the stock bike and save up for the Akrapovic (sic) pipe. I don’t carry pillion passengers so I’d cover that ugly spot with the cowling or fit a top box. Camera needs to tip up a bit. One of the Triumph Thruxtons had bars like that so you could still fit that cowling fairing. Definitely limited to a backpack 🎒. Sheene would probably give you two fingers if he thought you were Lawson. Colour doesn’t make much difference to the visually impaired and stupid as we just saw!
I'd go for the GP .... just get the belly pan .. fabricate a better tail tidy as that one is too long still and as with you Mark a longer can . Great review .... and show the "Rozzers" the footage of the old prick pulling out ... he needs a stern word .

Now I actually own an xsr900, not the gp tho. This test does not show its potential at all. This is NOT a dad bike cruiser and should not be ridden as such. It’s a hooligan bike, you take it out, you ring it out like you stole it for 2-3 hours and the you go home again.. I do love the word ’twat’ appears here😅
I guess I don't care to pay lots extra for a styling exercise, which is also 15-pounds extra weight and compromised riding position to look like a retro racer. Standard for me.
Agree.. I don't like how yamaha covered up that Beautiful Black frame and Engine on the GP.. why hide the most beautiful engine/frame assembly in the Bizz? Frankly my '23 XSR Blue could be the most beautiful but I'm biased!
I know it’s easy for me to say but, Lucky man, If you had been focusing on your riding you may have spotted the driver not looking and predicted he was pulling out on you. PS not to mention the lack of life savers, lane hogging and poor consideration for learner drivers
Yamaha has made some ugly roadsters in recent year, especially anything with XSR in their name. Too many odd angles and plumbing on show, but add the plastic and the GP is a real beauty. I hope they do well with it.
A BIG round headlight, higher bars and a usable (5 gallon!) fuel tank and the GP would be worthy of purchase. Crap-on bars make for an uncomfortable ride. I don't ride on a track and I don't ride as if I were on a track. And I am olde. 🙂 It's not as if either bike were fugly, they aren't. But the GP could be made, dare I say it (DARE! DARE!) more attractive with a ROUND headligh and no more crap-on bars. And that bigger tank so I can actually go somewhere without having to stop for fuel all the time. Wouldn't it be loverly? Had the triumph 675r Daytona, best race type bike for the backroads twisties. But as you say after awhile all that weight gets to the palms of your hands. I left naked bikes to try the 675r but I’m going back to 1000cc naked bikes, you still get all the performance and a little more comfort, especially after about one and a half hours. You still feel like riding. I think too on some rough backroads a standard can be more fun to negotiate.

Yeah, cruise control should be on all bikes except the tiny underpowered ones, if you know how to use it no more speeding tickets.
XSR900 QuickShifter does not require the throttle to be closed during up-shifts, only during down-shifts (from the manual).

Very sexy gp look, the original RVF 750 is my all time fave.

Kenny Roberts was late 70's, early 80's so the livery was a little different, but close enough.
Some people like the look of the GP model. But I am not a fan of it. The screen is a bonus but not essential.
