This was met with silence in 1983 but I'm choking with laughter in 2021. Good to see more of Ed and Johnny's "desk bits" on RUclips, they were so great at shtick like this.
The material bombed but the guys' interactions and responses made this a hysterical skit. I felt Ed was particularly on his game in this one. Loved it.
Thank you, Thank you, thrice Thank you. I saw the final minute on Bloopers and Practical Jokes. However, the payoff really didn't work without this entire bit. NOW, it's hilarious. "HO-LEEEE (BLEEP)!!"
March 1st 1983 Los Angeles saw a storm that they never experienced before on the west coast. A tornado hit Los Angeles with nearly 150 mph winds. Flooding and mudslides accompanied it. This is what Johnny and Ed were referring to at the start of this clip.
it makes you wonder if this bit was intended to bomb on purpose. it's always amazing that the jokes that bomb are sometimes funnier than his best stuff
And that, little boys and girls, is what analog TV reception looked like when you were not very close to the TV broadcasting signal, with a "bunny ears" antenna on top of the TV set. But hey, at least you had a picture and sound, not like this digital TV signal crap where you get absolutely NOTHING if you're not close enough!
The jokes were too esoteric. The writers were writing for each other and not for the audience. Still, Johnny and Ed did a great job of making humiliation funny and sympathetic.
I wonder if they had monitors that said Audience Do Not Laugh. The Gay Geese flying in the shape of a Q had me on the floor. So, what the Hell is wrong with this Audience. No-one could Bomb better than Johnny and Ed's laughing pulled us through the rough spots.
This was the pot luck talk shows had with audiences. Remember they were filled with people from across the country, whose sense of humor varied dramatically.
@@dhpbear2 Hi David, watching these clips back, I noticed Johnny using the door behind his desk, do you know when this door was added, as I feel it was never there during the 1970s shows, was it added at the start of the 80s, and was it used often for any purpose? Thanks.
@@dhpbear2 Thanks, I knew that door behind Johnny wasn't there during the 70s. I wonder why they added it? It really did nothing for the show, apart from a quick fire exit for Johnny if there were any danger in the studio.

It was the original 'found humor' which Letterman would take to a whole new level in the 80s!
Nobody was better than Johnny when the material bombed.

I agree. Ed really helped Johnny here, with his razor sharp wit.
5:42 I love this simply because of Johnny’s frustrated “Oh, now, come ON!” You can tell he was thinking, “This audience has no taste.”
I remember watching TV like that before cable.
I know who Trini Lopez is but I don't get the joke
@@hankkingsley2976 Trini had a big hit with "Michael, Row The Boat Ashore", hence the water.
@@manofmanyinterests the cartoon made it strange for just a second cuz it looks like that kid is doing something very strange
On camera or off, good joke or bad, McMahon's laugh alone added so much to this show.
Keep them coming..👍😂
@Elmo Calabrese Even with the shtty picture ( looks like my tv picture from the old days 😂).. Johnny is still funny!

Ed would bust balls and know when to pull back. they were a good team.
3:03 , i always loved how Ed would have a zinger about his material than Johnny would comeback with the threat of replacing him
This is one of my favorite retorts from Johnny!

and THIS, boys and girls, was why late night TV used to be the best gig in town --- and was truly funny --- unlike today's pap.
Pat McCormick wrote most of those jokes I"m surprised he wasn't fired the next day.
It was funny. It doesn’t matter if it was funny or not. It was always funny.
Ed jagging him to spur the act along
If Johnny Carson is able to see what we have now for late night comedy, he can’t be real happy. Carson doing a face plant is 10x funnier than today.
You can just hear Johnny's producer Fred DeCordova laugh off screen here at 5:22
My God. Johnny was so funny 😅

Hitler having a vision of Johnny Mathis . . . That’s incredibly funny

Someone send this to Fallon or Kimmel or Colbert for gods sake.
Why they already know what it's like to be unfunny
The night Johnny's routine died a painful death
Hitler and Johnny Mathis. How could that one miss?
Ed was not helping on this one!! 😳😳😳
Ed and Johnny's banter was always funny--but this was one of the worst bits in Tonight Show history, I think. All were just weird, not funny.
This one just may be worse! :)
