There is a quote from a monk that has resonated a lot with me lately: "A lot of suffering comes from the confusion of pleasure with happiness" And the more I think about it, the more I believe it to be true. We confuse the word joyful with the word happy, and they do not mean the same. Happiness is not a feeling per se. Happiness is a holistic concept of balance. What we usually mean with "a happy life", is actually the meaning of a peaceful life. To be at peace does not mean to be without emotion, nor it means to be in a perpetual state of joyful sensations. If we expect life to suddenly one day become an exuberant explosion of euphoric ever lasting feelings, we will become unavoidably and utterly depressed. We say we don't, but we act as if one day ever lasting pleasure in life is possible. It is not. And it should never be the goal. Our unhappiness comes from our inability to be at peace with reality, and thus, we do not even develop the frame of mind necessary to even be able to enjoy it. The reason old people tend to be "happier" with simple things, is because through age, comes the natural frame of mind that allows us to actually enjoy peace. Modern life has distorted the way we see life and ourselves. Substitute the word happiness with the word peace, and everything begins to make a little more sense. What we truly desire is peace of mind, peace of heart and a peaceful sustainable existence. This is what success means. This is what happiness means. This is what enlightment means. We need to reframe our minds. Peace is achievable and enjoyable. We just need to be able to recognize it.
This was, by far, the best summary of research in happiness I’ve seen online. I’ve watched sooo many videos, and this is the first time someone doesn’t just talk abt “you need to add variety, you need to be less distracted”, and actually goes over the different meanings for different people, the shifts during the lifetime, the outdoors. This was great!!
I listen to audio books when doing house work. And look at what I have achieve ( like the washing up on the drying rack) and tell myself how great it is. How it's good for me. Trying to motivate but being conscious of the benefit
I cant afford to outsource house chores. But i would save up for bigger chores like getting a professional clean of my oven, hob and filter. I think choosing what to outsource and weighing up the cost/experience is worth considering
I’m obsessed with ur channel its so underrated I feel like I discovered a gold mine
Right, same here
