I appreciate the level of attention to detail this season's production design has taken so far. They didn't have to design new phasers, but they did and that is awesome. I am not a fan of the normal timeline phasers, though. Maybe if they shift the handgrip back and ditch the trigger guard?
@@AtlantiansGaming absolutely! 1000% agreeIt always bugged me that Starfleet phasers lacked a trigger guard. IRL more than a few times people have suffered negligent discharges from their finger hitting the trigger. Now you have an open trigger, I could only imagine if some red shirt grabs it wrong, or it gets bumped wrong in a brawl. There is a reason why Trigger guards are a thing.
The EM-33 Plasma Pistol wasn't as common as the Phase Pistol. Appeared in the pilot, and was used by cargo crews. When the MACOs came aboard they had the EM-33 but they described it as a MACO Phase Pistol. As for the pistol Picard had... it might not even HAVE a stun setting, so there wouldn't be a toggle.
Alright my mistake, the pistol Picard is holding is not a Discovery 31st century pistol. It just looks a lot like it. I use it on my science officer in STO. Got thrown off by the shark gills on the side.
Sam is surprised that there's no stun setting you live in a vicious dystopian reality where they mount people's skulls in rooms. I don't think stun is a priority. If you don't surrender the first time I don't think you get a warning
Stun is super useful to take prisoners, prisoners are super useful to gain information AND/OR maybe you want to kill a person somewhere else more public later...a stun setting is essential. This is not the mirror universe this is just a darker Prime Timeline :D
The lineage is better than the gun itself, which I find rather boring, but I do appreciate it having a normal trigger guard, and it being small and sleek. It is also better over all than the Starfleet phaser, which I think has nothing going for it. I think the Starcore phaser needs a fire control optic, even if it's some sort of holographic setup. The TOS Type I/II has a reflex sight. My ideal PIC era Starfleet phaser would be a phaser Type I on a pistol grip. Ultra short, but easy to aim if eye tracking doesn't work. Throw in Type III target tracking and stability control with a holographic sight for long ranges. Basically save the Type III for use against enemies like the Borg or against vehicles.
When I was a boy I had the Star Trek tracer gun this was an awesome toy you can find one still works you should check one out too.... I wish chapter and Leonard Nimoy could checkt one out too...
The front/top/tip honestly gives me vibes of the Franklin phaser from Star Trek Beyond and that phaser ALSO gave me vibes of the assault phaser from Star Treks V and VI.
I am getting Walther PP vibes. In terms of ergonomics it works well, better than the Picard s1 Starfleet phaser or the wands. I have a suspicion this phaser lacks a stun setting.
I like the simplicity of it. I also like that the Picard era has returned to a pistol rather than the unaimable dustbusters of the TNG era. I also like that it has what few other Starfleet pistols have--a trigger guard which is a safety feature. Having nothing there but a trigger is extremely dangerous. That said, where's the trigger? Strange that there is no visible trigger mechanism.
I think in this timeline, the ST6 one would have the pistol grip farther back like a conventional gun and maybe some version of the finned emmitter like you see in the ENT MACO phase pistol. Prime phasers from TOS and beyond were a tool first and a weapon second, so it makes sense that they don't look like a gun. However, a militaristic alternate timeline version would want the ergonomics and ease of use that conventional gun design incorporates. If you simply move the pistol grip on the ST6 phaser to the rear and added a round or oval trigger guard it would fit into an almost perfect linear progression of design. Also, something you didn't mention is the lack of any sort of trigger on the new Picard design. My guess would be some sort of haptic touch input like fingerprint readers on modern laptops. As for a button on the back for stun/kill settings? The grip ergonomics seem like your thumb wouldn't be able to reach the rear very comfortably. Perhaps there's a small button on the other side which is operated by the thumb (like the safety lever on a Makarov, Walther, or 1911), or not have any stun setting at all (since in this timeline, they are conquerors and this pistol could simply be either a backup holdout weapon or possibly a ceremonial execution weapon only used for events like eradication day).
Is it just me or does the trigger guard on the new Picard phaser look like a pair of scissors that was molded in? Like they were kit bashing it in a way to come up with a sturdy trigger guard.
This might be a really unpopular opinion, but Starcorps should have just been called Space Force. This future we have seen in the past episode of Picard to me just looks like what humanity could turn into if, among other things, the stupid fucking Space Force shit is ever taken seriously. The Confederation IS pretty much the Space force taken to its logical extent.
In all honesty, and probably coming in from maybe left field, my 1st impression on seeing this side view was that the design cues harken back decades to the old Invaders show, the general size is close to their smaller 2nd iteration (what I'd always considered their derenger), that was somewhat plain so 3 angled vertical "ribs" were added, albeit to the front, slots on this, and toward the back, the color is very similar, the somewhat angled top profile and back, the emitter here is very different but if a small targeting were placed within that angled top...Invaders disintegrator weapon
Do you think Starcore has a stun setting? That was an innovation in Enterprise with the Phase Pistol. If this is a direct lineage from the EM-33 there wouldn't be a stun.
Innovation wise I have no issue with them having the potential. Doctrine and intention on the other hand. Starfleet views itself as peacekeepers and explorers, stun as such makes sense. It’s easier to make peace with someone who you tazed than it is when they are dead. The Star corps and Confederation though don’t seem like they are looking for the whole friendship side.
It looks more like an officer's personal sidearm as opposed to a standard issue fleet (or corps) phaser. Maybe its the one semi-evil Picard (not evil Mirror Picard) used to kill Ducat, Martok or the Grand Nagus.
I do like Picard S1 phaser, a real pistol type weapon while maintaining some evolutionary form of the Dustbuster. I hope it has been retained for Season 3. One question though, when Dr. Soong grabs the discarded phaser that rejects him and sets off the sequence to self-destruct (S2 Ep10), what phaser was that? Was it a StarCorps? Would StarCorps even have such a safety feature? Definitely for a Federation phaser… the trigger guard may have the sensor for it, akin to the dual action mode of certain auto pistols today.
The production design is a lot better this season. It’s a combo of the heavy phaser from ST VI and a German WW2 side arm. Thematically that’s perfect for the story. Honestly, I’m not loving the show. But I am loving the design. The look and continuity of the original shows was one of joys of Star Trek that the previous series neglected.
The new Picard S2 pistol could be thought as just a simple 25th century sidearm. Being it's a weapon of this "evil timeline".. what makes one think a stun setting is even an option. These characters do not look nor act like the stunning type.
Hand Phasers don't need to be large. The Walther PPK should serve as a good base for how large they should be. The Picard phaser looks comparable, size wise.
It reminds me a little of the pre phase pistol design starfleet used in Enterprise
We talk about that heavily in this episode!

Trigger guards are very practical.

Phasers are fine changing often. Uniforms shouldn't change so often hehe.
Not that often. Uniforms wear out by wearing. Phasers as a machine could take decades.
The lineage makes a surprising amount of sense. It'd be great if that much thought was put into everything, lol.
A phaser not just a weapon it's also a tool all the new ones just look like they just pew pew

I feel like the Confederation wouldn't necessarily believe in using the stun setting.

Great comparison guys! Great looking phaser, including the silver one.

There was actually a real gun made in the 70s that looked exactly like this
@@JustSumGuy01 HK VP70 yes. I had forgotten about it till you said 70s.
my first thought was Sig Sauer P230, but the HK VP70 is a great analogy, too.

I do like the look of this phaser. Pretty cool.

They sorta retcon that in the same series by season 4 where they used the same props, change the color and now it has stun
I'm kind of surprised they don't use disruptors!
