I am the target audience for this video and for this highway. I live in Richmond on the border with Henrico County in Fulton and work at Defense Supply Center Richmond (literally where the Pocahontas Pkwy turns into 288). I can attest that it would save me 5 min to take this highway. I never take this highway due to the crazy high $5.75 toll. I literally drive back through the city and the terrible Richmond roads because saving $11 a day is a no-brainer.
For numbers on how little 895 is used, it was at 8,800 AADT pre-pandemic (2019). For reference, here are some local Richmond streets that had 10,000 AADT in 2019: Patterson Ave between Malvern and Thompson, Nine Mile Rd between 25th and the County Line, 9th St between Manchester Bridge and Cary St, Williamsburg Rd btween Government Rd and the county line, Main St between 8th and 14th... you get the idea.
If you really go back and look originally, we were supposed to have a beltway all around Richmond but because people getting away of their own self and stupid crap happens we now have 895 and we also have 288 that never connected
I have another idea for you. I’m guessing if you’re living in Richmond or very close to it you haven’t had water and just got it back within the last day or two. Maybe you can make a video on that.
Haha yep! I’m planning on waiting until the city releases its audit on what happened. It’s already a national news story, so I don’t have too much to add other than my own personal experience, which is basically the same as everyone else’s.
Folks might use 895 if it wasn't such an expensive tool last time I used it. I think it cost me 12 bucks and I only used it because there was an accident on 64. Just found your channel it's definitely cool to see well-done videos on Richmonds infrastructure.
I love 895. It saves me so much time despite the toll. Just because you don't personally use it doesn't mean it's useless. It's great for anyone in south richmond or North Chesterfield. I use it multiple times per week to get to my mom's house in Quinton. Anyone from Chesterfield going to the beach will save time on 895. The 10 mins doesn't account for the frequent delays on 95 and 64. Taking west Hundred or driving all the way down to Enon to get on 295 adds at least 15 or 20 mins to my drive time.
I think that while this project was a waste it still could be put to good use. Since it acts as a orbital highway it could be justification for getting rid of the downtown highway. Or a much more reasonable justification would be to add tolls to incentive some thru traffic to go around the city.
New Kent is the fastest growing county in VA and there are multiple 700+ home developments happening right now. one is across from ronnies BBQ that has apartment buildings and town homes density around a fake downtown/main street. In 10 years White Oak will look like Short pump 2008.
The solution to 895 is to get rid of the toll. Or just make it a reasonable price even. $6 for saving at best 5 minutes vs taking 295 to Rt 10 to 95, or just taking the $2 worth of tolls to go though 195 is just insane. At least the Chesterfield Powhite Parkeay tolls will be gone in a year or two.
Excellent video, as always! I always thought that bridge over the James was crazy; I’d love to cross it sometime just for the sake of using it! All that effort in building the highway could’ve been better used for a nice rail rapid transit system for Richmond (the Pulse just ain’t cutting it). Hopefully there are some actually more useful projects in the Richmond area in the future!
Interesting video, but might be able to condense it to maybe around 10 to 11 minutes, when you have a large follower base then go for 20minute videos. Unless all 20 minutes in a video is packed full of info, you would likely just lose inattentive viewers all the best m8
it IS useless and should not exist. but man is it so pretty to drive on , and theres never anyone there so you can kinda slow down and take in the view!! is that worth the $5 it takes to drive up there? absolutely not lol
also as someone who commuted on 95&chippenham for years, no one was EVER taking that exit, it was funny watching cars almost accidentally take it before realizing it goes absolutely nowhere
Value my mobility. Sure don’t want a bug eyed far leftist or government changing that. Much of the original interstate system does need to be rebuilt, and has been reconstructed. More six lane projects are needed. Certain urban segments could be depressed or “cut and covered”. A few new routes will be very helpful, and show a big improvement in safety. Interstate 11, 49, and the short pieces in North Carolina.
@tyleralberico At minimum, you could have done some audio post processing to reduce the noise and echo. But it's probably better to re-record the audio with a real mic.
As a fellow richmonder I knew exactly which highway you were talking about before even clicking 💀
I’m not originally from here, but I definitely remembered it from trips to visit my family in Raleigh when I was younger. It’s hard to forget it

I always thought connecting 288 to 295 would have made way more sense than 895
I've been told that was the original plan
The fact that this highway is within spitting distance and I've never once gone over it...
That 10 minutes is really sweet. Especially with a mostly empty highway that you can cross twice as fast
288 was supposed to connect to 295

Wish we’d get a broad street line instead of this 😭

Oh wow I wish I thought of that
95 through the city used to be tolled. See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richmond-Petersburg_Turnpike
10:47 I always wonder why that is so tall.
I used it when I lived in the area; however, it was oversized for the traffic I ever saw.

I remember when White Oak was new. It was super awesome. But for some reason it’s stagnated.

I sure hope your not a hypocrite and you never use the highway system that supports our standard of living.
I do use highways! I just think we built too many of them, 895 being one of them.

How bad audio made me turn off this video:
I’m sorry to hear that! As I noted in the video, my mic audio got corrupted, so I went with the on-board camera audio.
