He could have survived and turned into a grim or he gained a semblance from being eaten alive by a Grim... If not then i definitely recommend since it's about Roman and Neo's backstory on how they met and it's pretty wholesome, makes you even more sad about his death since Neo has no one besides him. I don't think the book itself is available to read online but there's a site that sums up all chapters well enough to know the entire story.
