Here's a simple one to copy :)
On join:
If player has played before:
Set join message to "&b&lLook who's back! &a%Player% &b&lIs!"
Else:
Set join message to "&a&lLook %Player% Joined for the first time :D!"
On quit:
Set quit message to: "&cAw look &a%Player% &chas left :

maybe you've got an incompatable version of skript that is either too new or too old for the version of Minecraft you're running
