- VW Golf GTI vs VW Golf R
The mk8 Volkswagen Golf R is one of the most sought after hot hatches of 2021. But is it actually better to drive than the cheaper and simpler Golf GTI? In this CarGurus UK video, Vicky Parrott tests the 316bhp VW Golf R against the 242bhp VW Golf GTI to see how they compare.

I love the way she’s demonstrating how the touch buttons don’t always work by repeatedly pressing the wrong bit on the headlight controls. You can press there all day long and nothing will happen.
Been driving an R for a week now....not once have I accidentally turned anything on through the steering wheel....and the infotainment system, well if you’ve used an iPad or an iPhone and have a few brain cells it’s actually incredibly flexible and offers more options than I’ve ever experienced. It’s different I’d admit but it’s no hardship.
Exactly what I’ve been saying (I’ve not driven one yet but have a Clubsport demo for a few hours tomorrow as I’m considering one - or a Mk8 R to replace my 7.5R). I rarely adjust any setting when I’m on the move, so the touchscreen won’t be an issue. I’m pretty sure too that if you hold the ‘wheel properly, you won’t hit the haptic buttons by mistake. It takes a while to learn a new o/s on a phone so why begrudge investing time in doing the same on your car? Some journo’s (not this one) have been very critical of the system but that’s actually because they’ve not taken the time to learn how to use it, so would rather just rubbish it..
We have half a dozen ID3’s in our business and everyone is of the same opinion...the infotainment system and haptics on the wheel are massively frustrating!
Good to see a positive comment about the changes.
The haptics are not consistently responsive, very very frustrating.
@@jev2867 Got to say they were fine in the car I drove
VP quickly becoming one of my favourite car reviewers out there. No fluff or hysterics, just good proper common sense and real world experience. Also someone who you can actually relate to and believe, instead of the typical motor journo trying to plump up their egos by trying to convince us that they are driving gods.
I completely agree with this! 👍🏼
Seconded. 👍👍
Couldn't agree more. No BS but wonderfully addressed most of the questions of an every day driver. Many thanks
The R is far superior. Drive them both and tell me otherwise.
For 7k more it'd better be.
MY FIRST TIME HERE AND I'M LOVING YOUR REVIEW. YOU ARE SO WELL SPOKEN! I'M SUBSCRIBING
Love your reviews.... Keep it up love!!
Love that you have a knowledge woman narrating this video!
Great review from a great reviewer.
Interesting to have had your thoughts on the R vs GTI Clubsport, where the character rather than just 30% extra power is the issue. Good video though.
loved the review great job!
I got the Gti last week and love it.
Aside from price and power whats the actual difference between the r and gti? And drift mode and the diffs
What’s the price difference between the base model GTI and the base model R? It’s well over $10k. That is the price differential you should be going off of, not a loaded GTI price vs a base R, because then it would make sense to get the R, but not when the R is well over $10k more than a base GTI.
Good review, had my Gti a week tomorrow and i've not had any issue pressing any of the haptic buttons by mistake and the infotainment isn't as bad as all the reviews i kept seeing. Yeah its a bit frustrating when you first start using the car as your natural instinct is to try turn the volume or heater knobs e.t.c but it dont take long to get used to it and where everything is, I think its pretty good to be honest. Trust me try it before you write it off!
Had mine 5 months. Trust me it’s a real PIA. I can tell VW what they need to improve if they get in touch!
@@howardgregory3888 ah yeah, there are things that could definitely be improved but generally i think its not that bad, quite techy if you like that sort of thing.
I've heard about the issue with the infotainment system on a different review. The buttons really give journalists a problem.
I love how almost every reviewer complains about the infotainment system but the instant they are driving, a big smile comes across their faces. I’m buying a Golf R to drive, not for the gadgets.
I'm just happy VW GTI and R still come in manual transmission here in the US. Going with the R later this year. Good review.
Do they still have the fake sound play in the cabin
would be great to see you on a track with these
Loved this review Vicky especially in the R when you laughing, loved this review so much here.
Always great video car 🚙 content. 👍
Great vid well presented and honest, my kind of content. . .subbed 👍 would like to have seen comparison between the Golf R and GTi Clubsport 😎
Thanks for the sub!
Awesome review, the R is just more car more of the time. Its a very fast car in a golf chassis.
Really good vid!
I’d be interested to see a test of GTI Clubsport.
I’m reserving judgement on the touchscreen ‘til I’ve driven one (tomorrow!) but people who have Mk8 Golfs say you get used to them. I rarely alter anything when I’m on the move so it’s not an issue for me. I think it takes time to learn what the infotainment system can do, and best to program a few shortcuts (easily done). You expect to take a while to learn how to use a new o/s on a phone, why should a car be any different?
I’ve now subscribed! 👍🏼
4 seconds dead to 60 from the R.... yes please....
Does any reviewer like the infotainment and buttons on the MK8 Golf?
Just bought a Golf GTI SE (6-speed manual) in April in the U.S. Most fun car to drive since I owned a BMW 2002 from 1972-85. Hopefully VW has solved its leaky sunroof issues mentioned on many car forums.
Don’t like the front but man the backs look sexy as, I reckon if they had the old mk7 front and mark 8 back that would look really good
I bought an RS3 rather than a Golf R. I love my RS3. It has power along with looks.
I don't have to guess, we all know the GTI puts out more power than claimed.
Same with the r
Golf r:340
Gti:260
Can you slow down a bit on the price i missed it twice because you spoke too quickly so I've no idea how much these cars cost.
Wow, the trunk button is open, 6:57 Recording rear view?? 😅
personally I like the touch buttons, at least its one button that wont break!
Great review !
Glad you enjoyed it
The best car is always the one you can actually afford. Ive ordered a gti because the R is crazy money not just for the car but insurance and fuel
For that kind of performance it's actually a bargain
@@plaistowjames6792 Having had the gti about 2 months now i can safely say i made the right choice because holy shit this thing can burn fuel when you have a bit fun lol
Great review but at 3:30, Vicky is slating how the touch-sensitive buttons do not always work..... well if you actually try pressing the right button in the first place that may help, she should be pressing the mode button below where she is jabbing, all she is doing is jab the indiction light what tells which headlight mode you are in. Doh.
Also, from all the owners I know of the mk8 R, none of them have had issues with randomly accidentally switching on the heated steering wheel whilst driving.... it only seems to be press/youtubers who have only had the car for a few hours before handing it back that have this problem.
Cant wait for mine to arrive.
Great review Vicky. But the widely disliked/criticised infotainment system interface would be a deal breaker for me. Regardless of how good the car is to drive, if it's a pain to do everyday stuff like changing temperature or the volume of your tunes, it would quickly become a real pain in the a*se!
How did VW drop the ball so badly on the interior??? It's going to cost them so many sales.
Top demais golf GTI e golf R sou fã do modelo meu sonho lindo demais golf mk8 😍👏👏🏁🏁🏁🏁
The power going to "the outside rear wheels" wouldn't the rear wheel be outside? 😒🤔
When you are turning left on a corner, your outside rear wheel is the right one. So while turning if you are about to say drift accidently or slide the car will put more power to that passenger rear wheel and help push the car out of a slide and keep you steady
I could never own any kind of vw in my country there's always a security/design flaw being exploited
Just gained a sub with this
I really think that there's a heavy exaggeration among car reviewers over the haptic buttons in this new golf generation. The reality is that I've been driving a Golf 8 R since not even a week ago, and so far so good. I even might say that once you learn how to use every button properly it enhance the so called cheap interior and gives to it a little bit more premium approach despite some cheap materials in the interior.
I couldn't decide which one to buy so I bought a Club sport (for the missus) and an R, love them both.
Nice! 😅
Damn knew I was doing something wrong, only bought my missus a new jacket! 😎
Wonder how long the waiting list is ?
Huge for the R i am still waiting lol
Around 20 weeks for GTI CLUBSPORT and 18 for the R, atm. Not sure about standard GTI
@@andrewmontague2636 I ordered my R in February and still waiting.
@@johnstannard8366 Mine has been confirmed by the factory as week 23, second week in June. I ordered it in February........
I’ve since been told it’s even longer for an R, dealer wasn’t even sure how long!
Amazing car
VW need some decent paint colours... Plain boring white or garish purple... Yuk
Look at BMW's great range of colours for example
Cosmetic exterior body shape the G7 looks better.
Nice cars but I chose a Cupra ST, 280HP and saved a bunch of cash, in my opinion the Seats look better than the VW's.
It's a shame you can't get this as a 2 door, otherwise great cars.
Right of the bat she's wrong. My 20 SE costs 33000 in the US. Golf R 42000 if you can find one. $9000 is a large gap
In America we are waiting for the R.
Both look as boring as dish water, but no argument great cars ❗️
GTI, manual gearbox.........have some fun and save a lot of money not only at the purchase but on maintenance as well.
Says every GTI owner on earth
@@Cwahlers Do Jetta GLI owners count as well?🤷🏾♂️😂
@@andrelima5124 Ha ha ha not sure, the only thing I've heard from GLI people is "it's the same engine".
VW Just bring back the 3 door please!!!!!!!!!!!
Chalk & Cheddar
The golf r has 320 not 316 bhp
I honestly don’t know how you can call a golf a family car . I’m 6 ft 2 so not very tall, my wife is 6ft and we have one child who is 5. Looked at mk 8 gti and no way was it big enough. Putting the child seat in left no room and the boot could barely take the buggy and all the other rubbish. I hate suv s so I got the bmw 330i . I would have loved the golf
Umm the R is about $15K more so.
I truly want to buy this be MK8 GTI. Sadly it will not be sold here in the USA. The Golf R will be here , but I really want the GTI with a manual 6 speed.
What are you talking about? The GTI and the R will be here in the US, both with manual transmission. The only one not being sold here is the basic Golf.
Who told you that? The Golf won’t be sold in the USA, but the GTI and R will arrive in the USA at the end of the year! Whoever told you that does not now anything!!! 😀
its here now
Why do a comparison of two different cars with two different outputs? It’s like doing the M135i against the 2.8i. The Golf GTI is fun, it will always be, but the R is just that step up of power and they you can have the optional ‘drift mode’ 😜. Both unbelievable cars
Would have been a better match to put the Clubsport as a comparison car with its 300bhp. Quite a few people opting for that instead of the R.
The touch/haptic buttons really are not that bad. I've had mine for two weeks now and not once switched something on without meaning too. A great reviewer but I'm sorry not all is correct or at least certainly not for me
I owned and loved the Golf 7,5 GTE, but I don't see myself buying any of the new Golf 8 or ID cars after the crippling of the controls in the interior...
Don’t take too much notice of the journo’s. Not this one but many have made little or no effort to learn how to use the new controls, preferring instead to rubbish them. I currently run a Mk7.5 R and borrowed a new GTI Clubsport for a few hours last week. Mastered the screen in no time, and fund the haptic buttons easy to use too. All respond best to a gentle touch and not being jabbed by a forefinger whilst trying to negotiate demanding B road!
Cars that you buy with your eyes shut
Long live ice cars 👍
Wheels on both cars are fugly.
"All of the media features you want". Uh, no. All those touch/haptic controls are HORRIFIC. Give me back my knobs before I'd ever consider moving to a Mk8.
3”52 cue the smile 😃
Be good to hear what happens when next year's EU speed limiter regulations start to come into effect, Mandatory Speed Limiters Date Logging and GPS tracking sound like the death of fast cars on the road to me.
Self driving cars are coming and one day people will not be trusted to drive at all. Future generations will be shocked people were allowed to drive their own cars.
Too much technology. The interior looks like an early 80's video arcade with disco lighting at night. Squished headlights and the extreme sloping roofline is horrible looking. I will keep my MK7 and hope the MK9 isn't a dumpster fire as the MK8 has become.
Definitely wont be buying a Golf 8 until VW assumes the disgrace of the decision of touch buttons everywhere (even without ilumination for night driving) and replaces them by normal buttons. Just ridiculous, I don´t have patience to live with buttons that do not work or work when we dont want it.
I've had hire cars with these recently and they are horrible. Not all progress is progress. The worst is getting to the air con controls. I just want a button and dial, not an ipad!
Real Mk8 Golf R power is more like 340bhp....
Yuck. What a pile of poop lol. Especially that interior and shifter. And all those buttons, and touch sensitive ones. More to go wrong lol. Ends at MK7.5 for me. 🤷🏻♂️
I’m just bummed at how far down VW material quality has gone on these latest Golfs. The materials look like something you’d see in a Ford, not a VW.
lovely state of the art cars from Europe. Shame about the old hat number plates just needs a GB sticker on the back and we are back to a Morris Minor...
Great review. They ruined these cars with the touch interfaces. Who signs off on these terrible decisions at VW?!?!?
Why are all new car alloys absaloutely disgusting ! Ruin the whole car they must do it deliberately so you upgrade the wheels lol
Fines and golf r go hand in hand.
The touch sensitive interior is a blatant money saving exercise! Ruins the interior!
Yep and you said that about your mobile phone didn't you 🤦🏾♂️
Who on earth is those designer thinking? Touch sensitive button is antihuman
"This however could be persuasive" ..... You thought you had a good one and then Ryan Reynolds walks into the room 🤣
I'd rather have the new Cupra 300bhp hatch. The whole car is built better outside and in. VW WTF have you done with the interior on this sh1t3
The Cupra Leon is definitely the elephant in the room for VW.
It's a cracking car, just like the Golf GTI/R models to be fair, but it is better value and could tempt those who aren't bothered about badges.
Ultimately, VAG group wins whichever one you buy I suppose.
Alternatively, anyone with half a brain will opt for the 2-wheel-drive VAG hatch that has 300bhp, standard DSG and 19in wheels, has more rear legroom, which also looks infinitely cooler than the bland / fugly Mk8 Golf, and is better value - and has real buttons on its steering wheel: the new Cupra Leon 300 TSI.
It’s a no brainer, surely??
A few things wrong with the review. The golf isn’t very practical due to the terrible infotainment system and the integrated headrests that obscure rear passengers’ view and removes the ability to fix a tablet to the back of it for kids. Both VW and the review need to to better.
Summary of the video without watching it: just buy the Golf R.
£500 p/m for a GOLF 😀😀😀
I'd never buy either of these considering that the 2.0 TFSI engine is an accident waiting to happen. Worst engine they have ever made.
Dont know why you say that, have had 3 cars with that engine and no issues. Others I know had no issues either?
it's not a family car 👎
