Summary: Recently, neonicotinoid insecticides have been suggested to contribute to bird population declines worldwide. Using an advanced meta-analytical model including 49 experimental studies, we confirm that direct neonicotinoid exposure impacts behavior and health of birds, as well as their reproduction and survival. We argue that these combined lethal and sub-lethal effects play a role in the decline of bird populations.
