Funnily enough, in August 2015 the Railway Magazine analysed the timings and clocked City of Truro's top speed at 98.5mph; the GWR also covered it up out of safety fears.
I'm a huge, huge fan of the A1/3s simply because their designs are so fascinating, so elegant. Little did I know just how much history I was actually missing with them! Thanks for this, 4F, what a stellar video! The filmmaking was incredible, the music perfect and editing crisp, the research impeccable, and narration fantastic!
I love the Gresley A1s and A3s. They were my favorite steam locomotives ever and they were named after famous racehorses. Great Northern, Flying Scotsman, Victor Wild, Flying Fox, Robert the Devil, Royal Lancer, Merry Hampton, Doncaster, Persimmon, Lemberg, Pretty Polly, Prince Palatine, Grand Parade, Brown Jack, Knight of Thistle, Papyrus, Fairway, Cameronian, Salmon Trout, Sceptre, Tranquil, Book Law, Blink Bonny, Tagalie, Shotover, Trigo, Spion Kop, Centenary, Ladas, Manna, Spearmint, Harvester, Sunstar, Woolwinder, Minoru, Colombo, and Solario are all of the Gresley A1s and A3s that I know the most
The Funnel and the Cab were the ones that were reduced in height right? since I noticed the Early A1s has Taller Cab and Funnels while the later A1s have smaller Cabs and Funnel with the edges of the bufferbeam being cut off in like a circular slope shape etc to be in the LNER's Loading gauge so the A1s can be accessible to other routes I think
The 2nd private owner of The Flying Scotsman, Sir William McAlpine. Grandson of Sir Robert McAlpine, AKA Concrete Bob, who pioneered making Concrete railway bridges, and helped create the railway network.
I have to say this is an excellent video detailing the history of the A1s and A3s. I can't wait to see your next lner engines video. I also hope your next thomas video is either gallant little engine, Edward's exploit, or one of Duke's stories.
One thing to note, the Gresley design is based somewhat off the equally famous Pennsylvania Railroad class K-4s 4-6-2's of which 425 were built between 1914 and 1928, of which two, 1361 and 3750 both survive. 1361, being restored for a second excursion career. 3750, being a static piece at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania of which she and 1361 are both Official Steam Locomotives for the State of Pennsylvania.
@@thestati0nmaster579 You want proof? I'll give you proof. While Gresley was finding a suitable design for the GN's new Pacific, he crossed the Atlantic to try to find a basis to design his new engine. While in the States, he took notes of the Pennsylvania Railroad's still fairly new K4s Pacific's. From then on, he based the A1's off the K4s. why did he do this? I don't know, but seeing as the Pennsy was the "Standard Railroad of the World" as it was the largest railroad in the world by tonnage, revenue earned and passengers carried, it would make sense that he heard of them and took notes to build the A1.
Also if y’all want more in-depth info on Scotsman’s tour in Australia I highly recommend you go check out NWR1991’s flying Scotsman down under video since it provides more information
Yo, this was super cool, can’t wait for the next one. Only complaint would be that the statistics section was rather boring. If I really wanted that kind of information, I could find it on Wikipedia or something.
Sorry for the nitpick but the A3 tractive effort was 32000 lbs with 19" cylinders the 36k figure is from a one of experiment with 20" which the rest of the class didn't have as far as I know. Brilliant video still.
Imagine if this was in the Thomas world. It would be very awkward and uncomfortable to have your siblings die in a crash, then being replaced by another engine with the same name. Pretty sure that would have some conflicts
I have an interest in 2547 ‘Doncaster’ and not long ago I was wondering what happened to it? Did it get scrapped? or did it get bought by BR and then scrapped? Let me know if you have any info, thx.

Oh they'll definitely be discussed, though some put in with other engines as two of his classes of locomotives were rebuilds of other locomotives. (The A2/1s and /2s being two notable ones.)
Lost in the snow annual story 1988 Thomas's driver and firemen watch the sky anxiously. Heavy could loom and lower and it became dusk in the middle of the day. "We're in for it." Said the driver. "Will be needing the snowplow before long." Thomas was cross. He didn't like the snowplow. It was heavy and cumbersome. But he remember that Terence had to come and pull him out of a snowdrift. When he'd been ciliated before. "I'll just have to put up with it I suppose." he said to himself. His driver was right before long. It was snowing by next morning the countryside was thickly covered. Thomas could not go as fast as usual and his fireman want to top up his water tank at the junction. But they found that the water column was out of order. "Never mind Thomas "He said. "We can last until the station by the airfield." "We'll get some water there." Among the passengers who got into Annie at the junction was a lady carrying a large basket. Inside the basket was something which move about and now and then mute faintly. "I'm taking my cat to my daughter's." explained the woman." She's going to look after while I go away at Christmas." Once the train was safely on the move the lady open the basket and everyone made a great fuss at the cat as he sat on her own lap. Thomas stop at the station by the airfield and several passengers got out. A door slam. The cat was startled with a swift look around. He jump off the lady's lap. Through an open window and disappear into the snow outside. "OH no!" wail the woman and getting out of Annie herself. Ran to find the guard." not to worry." He said Encouragingly. "Thomas need water." "So we shall have to spend a few minutes here in any case." "You have time to look for your cat." "We can't have gone far in this snow." Some of the passengers got out to help with the search. Thomas's driver and firemen got out too. They didn't help. They are troubles of their own the water column here was frozen too. Like they wanted to junction and by now the water level in Thomas's tanks was getting dangerously low. "Where's your shovel". the firemen. "We'll have to fill the tank with snow". Thomas shivered. But said nothing. He know that the alternative was even worse. The firemen clamber onto the top of Thomas's tank and the driver pass a shovel up to him. Then he took his place on the ground and began throwing shovel of snow. Aiming to land them to the tank beside the firemen. Not all the snow reach it's target and each time. Some hit his boiler. Thomas Shudder. "Sorry Thomas." said his driver cheerfully. "Some children go snowballing for fun you know." "Hmmmm" Mutter Thomas to himself. "Not my idea of fun". Meanwhile down to the ground the searches for the cat were growing desperate. They seem to have look everywhere. But the animal couldn't be found. He was not in the station in the train. Under the train or anywhere near near it. They even look in Thomas's cab. But he wasn't there either. Just then there was a shout from outside. "Nearly fall" called the firemen. the driver mopped his brow. "Thank goodness for that". he remark. "This is warm work. "He slid the shovel once more under a heap of snow and lift it. The snow on the shovel move. The driver almost drop it in surprise. Then the heap of snow mute. "Well I'm blessed." Exclaimed the driver. " what a good job." "We didn't put that into Thomas's tank". They went to find the station master. Who gave them an old towel. Then with the cat had been thoroughly dried a porter gave her some workman's milk. And then the cat's owner thankfully. Put her animal in this basket. Later in the shed. Thomas told Percy and toby about the adventure. "I'm glad the lady got her cat back". He said. "Now she can go away and have a happy Christmas after all". "But I'll tell you something else". He added. "Take my advice and never snowballing". "It's no fun at all". "I've try it so I know."

Great Northern, Sir Frederick Banbury, Flying Scotsman, Solario, Victor Wild, Flying Fox, Royal Lancer, Gay Crusader, Robert the Devil, Enterprise, Doncaster, Cameronian, Salmon Trout, Captain Cuttle, Fairway, Flamingo, Woolwinder Papyrus, Flamingo and The Tetrarch
Quite informative video. Until these locos and the Raven A2s were introduced the GWR's 111 The Great Bear was the only 4-6-2 loco in Britain. I agree some of the names would be questionable by today's standards. The second 2744 Grand Parade notably pulled the Coronation express between Newcastle and Edinburgh in 1939 after taking over from an even more notable engine. A LNER Class G5 (NER Class O) 0-4-4T no 1837.
The Raven pacifics were inferior to the Gresley pacifics in areas other than fuel consumption. Their cylinders all drove the leading driving axle, with short connecting rods whose bearings tended to overheat and wear quickly. Using Stephenson's valve gear led to six eccentrics and a crank on one axle, a bad arrangement which gave trouble in service. Inside bearings on the trailing axle, under the ashpan, was never a good idea. One was fitted with an A1 boiler, but still couldn't compete.

This was the best video I've seen about the A1and A3s this was truly the best great video 4F Productions!
Amazing, smashing, magnificent! There's so many words I could describe this with, but none would do this justice. Excellent work.

Enjoyed every bit of the video, pretty well made and researched. Looking forward to learning more about the K3s.

Yeah
@@oliverthebrblack5330, someone told me that there was a plan to preserve Papyrus, but it didn’t happen and the engine was scrapped

To my knowledge 4472 and possibly several other locos began being built at Doncaster in December 1922 only being finished in 1923
