    they should start banning plastic big time, not just plastic drinking straws and shopping bags. plastics were clearly a mistake, and to people defending plastic because of its many uses: YES but limit it to medical and scientific purposes only. insane that every product you buy anywhere is just packaged in plastic, often times you buy more plastic than the stuff you''re looking to buy and actually want.

      Plastic is flammable and when burned in a controlled manner at high heat combustion is complete thus does not pollute the air. To keep land fills from catching on fire and releasing mass quantities of toxins they will have to be managed longer than the great pyramids have existed. To solve the the problem of accumulating garbage incineration has to be part of the equation.

    • @JefferyMewtamer
      @JefferyMewtamer 2 месяца назад +4

      Or at least run them until they need replacement instead of upgrading just because.
      Says a guy who bought a new desktop computer in May of 2023 because the desktop he got in October of 2011 finally died, got a new flip phone in 2023 because his provider was dropping support for the 3G phone he had been happily using for like 8 years, and is still using a portable media player that last had a firmware upgrade in 2016(and which I fear the day it eventually breaks down since it has nice features that are nearly impossible to find these days in a portable device, including a full-size SD slot, physical buttons, 3.5 mm audiojacks for both earphones and line-in, a removable battery(when I bought it, I even got a spare battery with a charging dock that could charge both the player and the spare battery, though sadly, the dock broke a few years ago)).
      Only device I own that I actually want a newer model of is my Raspberry Pi 3, and that's mainly because 1GB of RAM isn't enough to run a desktop environment, a graphical screen reader, and have anything left over for running any apps. That and the Pi 400 is the closest thing in existence to being able to buy a laptop without having to deal with the deadweight of a screen or the ridiculous mark up of devices built specifically for blind use.

      They should make bricks out of the recycled plastics, instead of boards. No sawing & the plastic remains mostly inert in a building. Now if the people Wal-Mart has packing delivery orders would stop being wasteful with bags... seriously, my last big delivery included an 18 gallon storage container that could hold the rest of the order, but the preparer bagged everything anyways... and more recently they used four bags for three items(one bag for a 2 liter, one for a small bag of white chocolate chips, and double bagged a 18-count carton of eggs.

      I miss the days of paper bags. Sure, they still were a product most people would use once then throw away, but at least they came with a built-in way of conveniently storing them for those who refuse to throw away stuff that can be potentially reused, and it was somewhat easier to find ways of reusing them. I've probably have a dozen soda cans and vitamin bottles worth of saved plastic bags just from walmart. It's enough to make one wish they could march into Walmart with a container of saved bags and bag up an order with second use single use bags or had a craft oven suitable for melting bags for casting.

      @@susiesweet8003 I'm on your side but I've also worked in engineering and purchasing (for engineering). I've had enough surgery I wouldn't be surprised at all at how much is thrown out and wrapped. I have enough wash basin kit components at home I could supply my own.
      We don't need plastic for packaging but there are some products that would be hard to reproduce otherwise. I'm pretty sure an air mask would leak air if woven of hemp and many people have latex allergies. Latex was used to coat cloth before plastic. I remember when the milk cartons and straws were paper coated with paraffin, also a petroleum product. The takeout fish and chips came in a grease-soaked brown cardboard box (like the cheap bakery ones) on cardboard plates. The paper straws worked fine when I was a kid. The newer paper straws are a travesty. Before that there were even more deposit items than I remember. In antique stores I have seen deposit-return pie plates for Table-Talk. (A commercial bakery.)
      The current system is cheaper for the hospital because they don't have to sterilized everything to eradicate MRSA and the other super nasties. I doubt if the newer hospitals are even set up for the large scale sterilizing they did when I was a kid. The bed pans were enameled steel. I don't remember the wash basins but an enameled basin would be unmemorable to me because everyone had those. Now they would probably use stainless which would be three times the cost at least of the steel. The hospital would probably add another $2k to everyone's bill per three days for the manpower, facility or outsourcing cost for this process.

    Such valid points to be stressed. As the simple reality of things is a constant which is subject to our understanding within what we consider to be consequently appreciable or detrimental as to the overall quality of our environment. We can achieve anything within our understanding of just those two factors, the ever suggestive reality of things along with the consequences of our own decisions, so as to perhaps develop an incentive to exist in a way which should beckon the earth to appreciate us being here. It is perhaps best to be deserving of our sheer existence, rather than not to be.., I suppose. Let alone within such capacities which are otherwise less suggestive to our ability to rationalize &/or retain logic.., as well as which are otherwise far more simplistic than it would seem we actually want to to be..., like coexistence, amongst observably different creatures & things.

    • @Anncrohr
      @Anncrohr 2 месяца назад +1

      Yes, but not as badly. The Antarctic is surrounded by one circular ocean current, which isolates it (and is one major reason why it’s so cold! Back in Earth history when South America was still attached to Antarctica, that continent was not covered by ice). So plastic there is mostly wind-borne.
      It’s very different for the Arctic, because warm surface water flows there (in the Atlantic that’s the Gulf Stream heading North) with all the microplastic it carries. The water then cools and sinks to the bottom of the ocean, but it doesn’t necessarily take the plastic with it, depending on its density and size. Therefore, plastic can accumulate in the Arctic at the water surface and subsequently on the beaches (and is taken up by organisms).

    • @Anncrohr
      @Anncrohr 2 месяца назад +1

      @@kitefan1most people live on the Northern hemisphere, that’s true, but it’s not the reason for the global plastic distribution. That’s due to ocean currents (which cross the equator) and in addition also the big wind systems (which don’t).

    Industry was good for the people of its time, and brought accessibility and new opportunities to many for quite a while.
    The normalization of that industry was however catastrophic in the grand scheme of human history. It has enabled us to become an unregulated global threat, and led to countless other more minor tragedies across the Earth.
    The invention and subsequent production of plastics is an extension of the same cycle. We would not have plastics without the fossil fuels we remain incapable of innovating beyond. Nor can we undo the damage at this point without further dramatic innovation, and lord knows how we get something to decompose all of this plastic, bacteria or otherwise. Not that it will really save us, just move the problem, since those of us that do still depend upon plastics for their shortsighted advantages will have to respond to the eventual rapid decomposition of plastic, provided we don’t go extinct due to corporate negligence and greed.
