    I’m a bi-vocational pastor. I work a full time job. I have 2 teenagers and married to my high school sweetheart. I pastor a small congregation of around 75 people. I’m the only preacher in the church. So it’s teaching on Wednesdays and preaching on Sundays. Plus all the complaints, the visits (I don’t mind it. I love the people) and other things. There is moments I’m mentally and spiritually exhausted to be honest. In those moments, all it takes is an encouraging word from someone that gives me the fuel to keep going. Of course I pray daily and stay in the word all I can. But we all need some affirmation that “it’s working” if that makes sense. I say that to say this….encourage your pastor. Pray for him. Lift him up when he is down.

    As a Pastor I can say with certainty, there are a lot of Sr. Pastors that are actually the ones shooting themselves in their own foot. They want to be seen as an expert in all things. Family, Marriage, Theology, Leadership, Stage Design, Music, Web Design, Graphic Design, Architecture, Adults, Youth, Children, Nursery and on and on and on. They want their opinions to always be the one accepted, they ironically seek to be king. They want to have the final say in EVERYTHING. They want power, control, authority and respect. They get that power and then realize to maintain it it costs them everything. And when they have all the power, they are the only ones people can complain to. This is one of the major problems in the modern church that no one wants to address. Pastors need to knock it off and stop being so prideful and arrogant and be comfortable not having all the answers and relying on teams of people to actually get stuff done. I've seen way too many "Kings" proclaiming to be David but really being Saul. Don't know how many times God needs to tell us that He (His Son) is our King...

      The problem is that many of these pastors do not train younger men, teach them, and pray for their calling as servants. Unfortunately, they have their preferences and neglect or take for granted their congregants. Most mature Christians don’t need their approbation, but they need to be encouraged. They are the ones that don’t complain - however, the need to shepherd their sheepthe Word, and share God’s Word. Too many neglect to prepare to preach and rely on their truth, which the congregation knows they are neglecting their position. Some feel they don’t need to be questioned. Sorry, that’s my experience! Go to the building, hear a weak message, give their collection, leave! No Fellowship, no relationship, nothing! We could stay at home and get the same pablum!

It's like military command structure but the people are wimps. I don't understand how anyone with a spine gets past the yes-men and the wolves in sheep's clothing, even in a better than average church. Be careful with the elders and officers, you don't know who they are behind the smiles.

    This is partly due to the professionalization of church roles. They see the role of Pastor as a job, not a calling, and then seek after their goals that might not be Gods.

    • @bmbutler2

      @@bmbutler2no doubt, many churches are asking the wrong questions; they are consumed with pragmatism, rather than holiness.
      Pastors are called to care for their flock, first and foremost. As internal growth of members takes place, external growth of numbers inevitably follows.
      As a society, we concentrate too much on what ‘we’ are doing (or planning to) rather than glorifying God for what He has, is and will do.

    This is 100% true. I have served in church music for over 40 years in a full-time and part-time capacity. Every single point he makes is 100% true. 100%. If you don’t believe that, I will guarantee you have never worked on a church staff. Doesn’t matter the denomination. Can even happen in a synagogue. My favorite story from my time playing in a reform synagogue on Friday nights was being told I didn’t play “Jewish enough.” I’m not joking. What was the problem? I didn’t play the organ like their 80 year old funeral-like playing former organist. I quit. Only to be asked back after they told the perpetrator to “shut up.” I stayed until I changed FT position in a new state.
    I’m going to leave this here because this is a very touchy subject with me. I’ve been through many things including being canceled from a new church position one week before starting because a woke staff member freaked out over a FB post. (Staff members: keep personal and business separate. ALWAYS). Even though a PT position, it was a significant and immediately loss of income and I wasn’t allowed to even know what it was all about.
    Please don’t forget the other staff members in a church. They can suffer right along with the Pastor and more so if the Pastor is the problem. I respect Todd, but too much emphasis is out on the Pastor and the other staff members are ignored.
    As I told a church 19 years ago when I was their interim for a summer (same church that cancelled me 19 years later btw) support your staff. If you hear gossip, stop the person. If you hear a lie, speak up for them. If you hear crap, stand up against it. Those things are evil and will rot out a church body just like cancer in a human body. Sadly, most congregations are too weak. In the case of a pastor who is horrible (and I’ve had many) the people give them almost god status and believe you can’t speak against them no matter the apostasy and evil they commit.
    I’m going to leave this now. (I’m sure most are happy). This subject for me is like a wound. It has a scab and as long as I don’t touch it, I go along fine. But like an abusive relationship, get thinking or talking about it and you can go right back there. Good luck to those serving. For those not, don’t be a jerk and sit back pontificating like you know what it is like. Many times YOUR ATTITUDE is exactly what staff members have to deal with daily.

      Way too many hypocrites out there to just ignore this. For what it's worth to you, I'm not happy you have left this [subject] now - it needs to be examined and corrected!
      The people who need real fellowship are driven out of congregations by pastors and staff "because they are Inconvenient to help or deal with" in a real way [not just words!].
      People have Bad Attitudes towards ministers because they have encountered too many in Ministry who Talk the talk but don't Walk the walk! The Bible is not the Arbiter of Truth in their Lives and Ministries! {Conveniently doing the things they want to do seems to be their Bottom Line.}

    My hat goes off to all the pastors. I served as one for 18 years. It is both an extraordinary experience, but it can also be a terrible experience. Definitely, churches are hospitals that receive broken people to be taken care of by broken people. Praise God because He gives us strength, wisdom, patience, love, and understanding to do ministry. I am thankful for how my family supported me all that time and for the many collaborators along the way.
    Now, that being said, please, those of you who have a pastor, make sure that he will have financial stability for his retirement years.
    In my case, I will only have Social Security and is going to be very tight for my wife and in the coming years. Give words of support and ask from time to time if he is doing OK or if he or his family needs anything. Thank you.

The process of sanctification is a slow and often immeasurable process which never ends till death, so we are never "complete" and that can be a discouragement to Pastors. In the biblical context, it's essential to recognize that the titles commonly used in contemporary church settings, such as "Pastor" or "Apostle,", "Evangelist" were not explicitly assigned to individuals among Jesus' followers during his earthly ministry and are the traditions of men. The term "pastor," for instance, as commonly understood today, was not used in the same sense in the New Testament. In examining the New Testament, it becomes evident that the role of a pastor, as understood in modern contexts, differs significantly from the biblical model of leadership within the early Christian communities. Nowhere in the New Testament do we find individuals serving as pastors in the contemporary sense, where they act as the central focus of worship or the sole leader of the gathering. Instead, the early Christian gatherings operated on a more egalitarian model, where multiple individuals contributed to the edification and guidance of the community. While certain individuals were recognized for their spiritual gifts and leadership qualities, there was no hierarchical structure akin to the modern concept of a pastor. In the New Testament, leadership within the church was characterized by a plurality of elders or overseers (also referred to as bishops or shepherds) who shared in the responsibility of shepherding the flock. For example, in Acts 20:17, Paul summons the elders of the church in Ephesus to meet with him, indicating a group of leaders rather than a singular pastor. Similarly, in Titus 1:5, Paul instructs Titus to appoint elders in every town, emphasizing the collective nature of leadership. Furthermore, the New Testament emphasizes the priesthood of all believers, where each member of the community is encouraged to contribute their spiritual gifts for the benefit of the body. In 1 Corinthians 14:26, Paul writes, "What then shall we say, brothers and sisters? When you come together, each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up." This passage illustrates the participatory nature of the early Christian gatherings, where multiple individuals were involved in worship, teaching, and edification. There was no single individual elevated above the rest as the primary leader or focus of worship. Therefore, the modern concept of a pastor as the central figure in church gatherings does not align with the biblical model of leadership and community life depicted in the New Testament. Instead, the early Christian communities functioned as collaborative and mutually supportive fellowships, where leadership was shared among qualified elders and all members were encouraged to contribute to the spiritual growth and well-being of the body. While Ephesians 4:11 mentions "pastors" among the spiritual gifts given to the church, it's crucial to understand that the Greek word translated as "pastors" in this verse, ποιμένας (poimenas), simply means "shepherds." These shepherds were primarily responsible for nurturing and caring for the spiritual well-being of the congregation, akin to tending to a flock of sheep. Moreover, Jesus himself explicitly cautioned against the use of titles of honor or authority within the community of believers. In Matthew 23:8-11, he admonished his disciples, saying, "But you are not to be called 'Rabbi,' for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. And do not call anyone on earth 'father,' for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah. The greatest among you will be your servant" (NIV). This teaching underscores the egalitarian nature of relationships among believers and emphasizes servanthood over positions of authority or hierarchical titles. While certain individuals may possess spiritual gifts, such as shepherding or teaching, they are called to exercise these gifts humbly and with a servant's heart, rather than seeking elevated titles or positions. Furthermore, it's worth noting that even the apostles, who played significant roles in the early Christian church, did not refer to themselves with titles such as "Apostle Peter" or "Apostle Paul." Instead, they identified themselves simply as Psul an apostle and servants or messengers of Christ in their letters and teachings. Therefore, when considering the role of leadership and service within the church, it's important to focus on the function and purpose of these roles rather than on titles or positions of authority. All believers are called to shepherd and care for one another, following the example of Jesus Christ, who is the ultimate example of servant leadership.

    A pastor is called to teach correct practice and correct doctrine. I would contend that very few pastors know how to make disciples as Jesus taught in Matthew 28:19, 20. So many are no different than a rabbi. They do not teach the people to "go". The people who have been taught to make disciples and become reproducers are not the complainers.

    I am looking for the place in the Bible where it describes professional clergy and special calling to the office of pastor.... My analysis is that it is an issue of doctrinal tradition and the frustration that comes with trying to teach from the Bible that which is extra-biblical. In the information age, it is difficult to lord over literate people through dogma. Everyone has a bible and can search it... so we know when the 'teacher' is blowing smoke. 'If you think otherwise, maybe you are not a Christian/biblical' is among the most common lines from the pulpit except the basic gospel....

I hope the Lord's leading became more established for more churches as the state pushes in more and more. Is it time to leave the 501c3 yet? We all need to decide. Do we give for a tax write off? Start by not itemizing your giving, if you have in the past. It's very freeing. If churches knew people would still give, it would be easy.

Right now there are a lot of Senior Pastor positions that need filling as many pastors have retired and many young men are not qualified for the position. The ones that are qualified are seek what church the Lord is leading them to. A major problem is that church is too demanding on them and thier family. They want the Pastor to do everything in the church while they sit back and tell him what to do all that while judging his wife and kids and comparing him to the last Pastor. It's very hard and I see a lot of churches closing down or getting replanted by there denominations.

    If I depended on my pastor - nearly any modern pastor, really - to care for my soul or to feed me so that I would grow spiritually, I would die. Pastors seem to have interest neither in the sheep, nor in Christ. It’s all about growing the church.
    Yes, we must be more encouraging, but there is also something not going right with the pastorate these days. They aren’t praying men anymore, and how else is the pastor to keep watch for my or anyones soul?
    Don’t get me wrong, I don’t complain to my pastor. I keep my mouth shut. But I also have given up hope that any modern pastor will notice my soul let alone keep watch over it. I cry out to the Lord alot over this. “Lord, no one cares for my soul! Please care for me, because if You don’t, no one will!” And I spend a lot of time with Christ looking after it myself. This is the only option in many churches.

    Jesus had His fair share of complainers I would suspect. Martha was mad at Mary for not helping her and wanted Jesus to intervene. The Apostles were mumbling about who was the better among them. When Christ calls a man to be a pastor it isn’t an easy one. It’s a demanding calling, to be sure. For any pastors who might read this: There are people like myself who are thirsty and want honest, strong leadership and mostly a pastor who wants to spread the Good News of the Gospel. I don’t want to join a club, I don’t want my ears tickled and I will serve and do my best to encourage you. We ALL need to be better - pastors, elders, and the sheep he shepherds. I want to add one final point: Being a pastor is so much more than a job/career. Satan will try you, tempt you and try to frustrate you and whisper in your ear to just quit and work a normal job, please don’t listen to his lies.

    The majority of these quitting pastors are not qualified. They wanna learn on the job and arent patient nor kind. Very few pastors out there barely invest in people but want loyalty from everyone without reciprocity. I say this as a pastor and have 36 years of experience in what I have said.
    A qualified pastor should be encouraged and loved.
    The unqualified should, should step down and get qualified by many years of ministry before becoming a pastor. Sheep bite. Sheep complain. Sheep are selfish and they stink. Love the sheep. Be kind to the sheep. Feed the sheep. In time, God will bring about the change. If it doesn't happen by our efforts, then we are learning patience.
    2 Corinthians 6:3-13
    [3]Giving no offence in any thing, that the ministry be not blamed:
    [4]But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses,
    [5]In stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labours, in watchings, in fastings;
    [6]By pureness, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned,
    [7]By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left,
    [8]By honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report: as deceivers, and yet true;
    [9]As unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and, behold, we live; as chastened, and not killed;
    [10]As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.
    [11]O ye Corinthians, our mouth is open unto you, our heart is enlarged.
    [12]Ye are not straitened in us, but ye are straitened in your own bowels.
    [13]Now for a recompence in the same, (I speak as unto my children,) be ye also enlarged.
    This is given first to the apostles, then to pastors and other leaders then the church.
    Pastors have forgotten this and just want roses and blissful church experiences. Walk by faith that Christ is in you as you minister. No matter the bites or complaining and you wont quit.

If you aren’t putting money into your denomination’s 401k/403b, that’s your fault especially if the church or denomination matches. Even if you don’t have that, you can still put money in an IRA or Roth IRA (and full disclosure, I now work in wealth management and serve PT in a church. I used to be FT for 10 years. Thankfully God saw I was worn out at 36 (people said “you are just turned out.” I told them “no, I WORN out. Big difference.” And went into this and serve PT after a 2 year break.)

    Hi Todd. I appreciate your ministry and agree with you for the most part on most topics. However, this one I didn't entirely agree with for a couple reasons:
    1) The comparison of a pastor to an IT guy I dont believe is a good one having worked as tech support in different capacities since tech support is there purely for the purpose of fixing things when they break. Pastors are there to feed you and help you grow on a consistent basis, as you rightly quoted from MacArthur. If you aren't growing or your pastor isnt feeding you correctly, I believe its fine to question the pastor on it.
    2) I was just talking to my own pastor recently and we agreed that the seminaries and Bible colleges these days are churning out unequipped, unprepared, and sometimes flat out unqualified "pastors" who have no understanding of what being a pastor and ministering the Gospel are truly about (ex. Steven Furtick). I dont think its complaining for a congregation to call such men out and insist that they course correct and humble themselves if they have not done so already. If such a man gets discouraged and wants to quit the ministry because of this, maybe his calling wasnt a true one.
    This not an attack against you or your ministry Todd, far from it. Just a couple considerations on behalf of those of us who sit in the pews.

    Ephesians 4:11-13 - And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.
    The vast majority of these are job seekers instead of God's given man for these ordained & annointed positions of responsibility. Responsible to God and not the saints! Responsible to God and not the denomination! Responsible to God alone!
    Ministry would be easy if not for the people...... someone once said! Yet, God Himself calls one to ministry. Not the people! Yet, for the equipping of the people! For the work of service unto God. This is making disciples! In the same manner as demonstrated by Christ Himself in the Gospel narratives. It is not about preaching 3 point sermons each Sunday on topics that tickle the ears of those in the audience. Equipping is a long marathon of ups and downs with stubborn, prideful, self concerned children!. Yet, God loves and abides with His children, never leaving or forsaking them..... even ae they shake their fists at Him in contempt! Those Gospel narratives of Matthew, Mark. Luke & John reveal that love and devotion ever so strongly! What were Christ's words to His Father even as they had nailed His flesh to a cross?..... " Father,, forgive them for they know not what they do. "

He was combative and was known to fly off the handle for no real reason. He left go to Africa after finding out he had a behavioral problem. The two remaining elders and the church added another elder and they hired a man who speaks lightning fast, gives 12-20 scripture references per sermon and when gently confronted has blown off two men in the church who are good men. He blows off people in his classes and when he came the church had about 119 people coming. As of two Sundays ago, they are down to about 80 people and more will bleed off. Ministers are given WAY too much to do. There is a reason there are deacons and the elders should rebuke the complaining class. I left that church and went to another one who is having trouble with their preacher. I don't know what he has been through in four years, but all three of these gentlemen have a works based push in their lessons. That is not what Jesus preached. Knowing you are loved and your sins are covered should prompt you to good works. Most folks are waiting to be asked to use their talents and skills, but we are so busy running the church like a corporation we have forgotten we are family. Hosea 4:6

    TL:DR long rany about how churches started choosing their pastors in the world instead of the spirit/word. Why does a church need to be accredited by the state why does the state have anything to do with the church? Pretty sure Jesus defied both church and state in order to appease God. Maybe this wouldn't be such a problem if we would stop following the COMPLETELY unbiblical model of "a pastor and his church". There is not even a HINT of such a thing in Scripture. There is no such person in Scripture as "a pastor". There are persons who have the GIFT of pastor, but nobody who has any such title. Rather, there are elders, who are men with the gift of pastoring, and elders are ALWAYS plural.
    And no, that doesn't mean that we pretend to have a "teacher elder" and then some others elders who do only token teaching.

    Ya, well the congregation needs fed. Enough Sunday school. Pastors are supposed to be called not made. Called because they know SPIRITUAL truths of scripture and can keep people in Spiritual faith to a Spiritual God.. All we get today is Physical interpretation of men. NOTHING spiritual about it. This means (since its not Truth) there is room for debate, and un certainty. If someone in the congregation asks a Pastor a Question that is deep and needs Spiritual understanding to give a answer, but instead they give them something that does not make sense or is countered by scripture, or even worse, don't tell them anything but to chalk it up to faith. Well, this causes lots of problems. It even gets people to leave Christianity all together.. If the Pastors want encouragement then the Shepard needs to Love there sheep enough to feed them MEAT. We are starving for TRUTH, not mans interpretation or opinion. WE DONT WANT RELIGION OR TRADITION. We want TRUTH that lifts the soul and brings faith to God, not more questions or complaint. Want encouragement? feed the sheep the Gospel and leave your Sunday school story for the new converts. Instead Pastors keep new converts eating milk there whole life, and the lambs are full. Time to feed the sheep. If those pastors were real Spiritually led pastors they would not feel this way or be quitting. So good riddance to bad rubbish I say. Let the Physical minded Sauls leave, they did there job, now let the Paul's take it from here.
    Physical interpretation has lead to Worldly doctrines and now the Pastors are being questioned and cant Haddle it, nor do they have the right answers to give. So if they choose to step down, that's better for the church as far as I see it. Maybe now we can focus on Spiritual things and find Truth in God Word and Prayer. We are to have a Personal relationship With God. Not God and Pastor. Thanks for all your Work Pastors, but goodbye. Cry baby pastors who cant face a bit of persecution from there own members.. lol week in Spirit! they had no business calling themselves Pastors to begin with. They have no faith in God, their faith is in themselves and when they dont get praise for THERE work they quit.. Bye Bye.

    And regardless of who they are . If they choose to operate outside thier relationship with Christ, well what do
    You think are going to be the consequences/ramifications?
    Yes if they are called to shepherd the flock then they should be leading. And I case they may have forgotten the one corner stone of leadership. Then as with all saints , may they should go back and read, John 13:1-17.

All N.T. scripture that speaks of these things were to remind the churches of the sacrifices the few were making in order to plant churches and see to it that they become established. Once established, the a apostle or church planter would leave after commending that body to the grace of God. Some people do get offended when you ask them simple questions like "How often do you reboot your computer?" They take it as some kind of personal judgement that they don't know how to maintain their equipment or something.
    People do compare you to previous support technicians that have worked at the same company, or a current support technician on the same team.
    Also, if you're implementing a change that's going to make everyone's life easier in the long run, people absolutely do complain about things not being "the way we've always done it." and will whine, and drag their feet to avoid it if they can.
    I never really thought about the fact that pastors deal with that same kind of stuff, more frequently for probably considerably less money and definitely have more "on call" time than most I.T. support technicians. Thank you for finding a fun and lighthearted way to address a serious subject.
