The guy dancing in the audience at 0:58 is my hero. He doesn't give a crap that he's on camera or that no one but the contestants are standing, that's music you dance to so he's gonna dance.
I'm also curious about the guy 2 seconds later at 1:00, over on the right sitting right next to 3 YellowJackets and right in front of all of Vocal Point. Just an anonymous ticket holder who found himself adjacent to a production number. It does seem a bit shabby on production's part that the YellowJackets never even made it onstage in this opener. Though I know they had a lot of performers to find positions for this week.
There's a cryptic note on Wikipedia that this was the largest live performance in TV history. I think it was taken (badly) from a press release about the number of live and/or wireless microphones. Since this is when the two brackets merged they needed a massive number of microphones for the opening number. They ran around 120 wireless mics plus a dozen or two wired mics in the boxes. At that time it may have been a record. It used so much radio spectrum to prevent interference they had to use computers to calculate the channels of the wireless microphones and coordinate with local sports, TV and music venues as well as police and public service. (Groundbreaking in 2011, common procedure today).
I think the person who wrote that misheard/misremembered what Nick Lachey said at the end of the episode just before this: that the next opening number would be the biggest in SING-OFF history. And it was, since instead of having only 1 large collegiate group, like in prior seasons (Bubs for Season 1; OTR for Season 2) this number had 3: Aires; Yellow Jackets, and the Deltones. I don't remember them making any claims about television history in general, just their show. Maybe that's what the Wikipedia note meant to say?
Ashley Miyares I spent a good while searching on Google for anything related to the Sing-Off and microphones, setting records, etc. and only found the bit about coordinating the wireless mics with the authorities. If there was anything there when it aired it's probably long lost in the past. I guess we'll never know.
There was also a statement at the time (which naturally I can't find now) saying that due to the large number of wireless mics that would have been needed, the background (choral) singing for these numbers was pre-recorded. I'm not sure how that fits with the press release, or the need for the designated soloists to alternate foreground and background duties. It's all kind of confusing....
I also thought Vocal Point and Afro-Blue gave excellent performances (PTX has expressed their admiration of the latter), but both groups had limitations for this competition in terms of being comfortable in only certain musical styles, and in being used to longer preparation time for creating new arrangements. In The Sing-Off, you had to be versatile and fast-thinking.
it's insane how many mics they're fitting onto one stage. The fact that these openers aren't just one big screeching noise is a testament to whoever was doing sound design.
What is really sick is...... I CAN HEAR AVI even when it's the full on group sing! Dude, I can pick yer voice out!! OH MY GOD.. I've never been able to do that before. You have a sound that is all your own!!!! When I get my venue set up and ready to go, I so want Pentatonix there! You guys are so amazingly awesome!
REALLY late to this, but just commenting to note that when Avi was in *community college* they quallified for the ICCA (the thing Pitch Perfect is based on; and I believe the first time a Community College had EVER qualified) and the judges literally re-wrote the rules during the middle of the competition explicitly so they could give Avi a medal for "best background vocals" (previously best beatboxer). Dude was already VERY well known within the a cappella community to be completely ridiculous even compared to other world-class basses.
Now this... THIS is how unite the remaining 10 groups from the 2 different brackets. But did they really need to show the names of the groups again like the first 2 episodes?
I think they did; at least, I liked that feature. Five of them had not "met" the other five onstage before, and I appreciated the visual cue that this was something of a reboot, now that six groups were gone.
@@DelGuy03 Also, there were probably some viewers (myself included) who were watching the show only for one of the groups, and had skipped the episodes they weren't in up until this point. I was a Vocal Point fan and I watched this show only because I heard they were competing. Vocal Point was in episodes 1 and 3, so those were the episodes I had watched. I was glad this opening number showed the names of the other groups so that I could have a head start on learning the names of Vocal Point's competition (Pentatonix was one of those names I learned, and one I will never forget.) :D
I wish it had been that clear at the time. I certainly favored them from the start when I watched, but I couldn't feel confident the national viewers would agree.
Is this after kinfolk9 or the people with Moi got eliminated? I didn't actually watch the show, the day after PTX won I saw a video on RUclips and fell in love
@sushores I think at the end of the christmas special...can't remeber the song title or exact number of vocalists, but it was well over a hundred people.
They're wearing what they wore for their fourth _performance_, not the fourth episode. It was initially split into different groups performing on different nights and they were in the second group, so their ET performance didn't appear until ep. 2 and I _think_ both the second and third performances (love is my drug and piece of my heart) appeared on episode 4. By the fifth episode the two groups were combined.
This is the 5th episode but that episode was where they combined the two nights of acts. This was Pentatonix fourth Performance "Video Killed The Radio Star" and where I think they truly made it all about them. ;)
That's how I feel. I don't dislike anyone's voice per se, but I do wish some of these ladies could be coaxed away from the aesthetic that what any vocal phrase needs is a squeal up into the highest imaginable register.
listen, I'm all for Mitch and HIS high notes. but THAT dude (idk what his name is) is KILLING it at 1:39
... and possibly himself! Yikes! :)
By the end, the harmonies were so dense, they were almost a physical thing you could touch. This and the Halloween Opening just blow me away.
Did you see Mitch and Kevin at 38 seconds? Just shimmy along there
that was epic
I now cannot stop laughing. :,D
I'm crying
I CANT STOP LAUGHING
HAHAH I NEVER NOTICED THAT!!

I feel like most of this season was the Pentatonix and Dartmouth Aires show lol. Love them both tho.

I like it when Kirstie dances she gets so into

Yes! Very true!
This is the one opening number where I absolutely refuse to believe it's all vocal. Best opening in the history of the show.
It's amazing what you can do with just a million voices put together
What is really sick is...... I CAN HEAR AVI even when it's the full on group sing! Dude, I can pick yer voice out!! OH MY GOD.. I've never been able to do that before. Scott's Voice at 00:25 *___* he's the best :)
1:42
Love this song and little strut
O-o did u see that guy in vocal point...... he winked to the camera
This performance said to me "hold on to your couch america, shit's about to get real"
The singer from the collective sounds like she's being viciously shaken all the time.
I am going to watch this over again just to see the dancing!
1:40 dat high note!
0:04 Laina on the left and Hannah on the right delivering lol
Love this!!! I need to sing more for sure!!
YeaaAAaaaaAAAAaaaAAA!!!!!!!!
Woooowww....that's a lot of mics!

Some of those groups hadn’t been on for 2 weeks. I like that they show the names each week.
AFRO BLUE😍😍😍
Sooooo looking back on this, no one had a chance against Pentatonix.
I wish it had been that clear at the time. I certainly favored them from the start when I watched, but I couldn't feel confident the national viewers would agree.
I wasn't sure until Video Killed the Radio Star that they would win. After that, it was painfully obvious even to the other groups.
How did the guy's glasses didn't break at 1:39 ?
Is this after kinfolk9 or the people with Moi got eliminated? I didn't actually watch the show, the day after PTX won I saw a video on RUclips and fell in love
@sushores

Oh and 1:40 is RIDICULOUS :O
@EntwinedMusic Haha I saw that too! He looks like one of the guys from Committed from last season.
That's a lot of microphones..
where in the world do they get all those microphones from??
Am I the only one Always checking out the comments to see if ptx is in this and if not skip the vid :"D i cant be the only one lol

My goal is complete i fanily foujf kirstie, mitch, kevin, Avi and scott
Monkman.
That guy in 1:06 with the yellow jackets LOOOOL
Wait.... This is the opening for episode 5, but pentatonix is wearing what they wore for episode 4... Wut

The girl at 1:10 has got to go, sounds like she's yodeling.
I don't know why, I like to hear all voices except singer of The Collective. Her voice is unpleasant for me.
+Katka Plesarová SAAAAAAAAAAME HERE
I TOTALLY hate it
It's a bit too much to sing that way all the time. A little bit would be fine, but it's because she ONLY sings that way.
That's how I feel. I don't dislike anyone's voice per se, but I do wish some of these ladies could be coaxed away from the aesthetic that what any vocal phrase needs is a squeal up into the highest imaginable register.
