Nunc dimittis: • Herbert Howells - Nunc...
Written with the acoustics of his native cathedral in mind, Howells' Gloucester Service is a staple of the Anglican cathedral repertoire and has remained perennially popular since its completion in 1946.
Sung by the Choir of St. John's College, Cambridge under the direction of Andrew Nethsingha

‘juicy’
I have to admit, I really, really don't like Howells. However, I cannot find a single fault with the Gloucester Magnifact. It is absolutely fantastic to sing and to listen to. The Gloria is just absolutely superb! As a bass, that "As it was in the beginning" is just sheer bliss!
Thank you these settings of the Canticles could become very useful for parish choirs
"I really, really don't like Howells". Blimey! I have sung Howell's settings (including the St Paul's Service) in Lincoln Cathedral and it was one of the occasions in my life when the hairs on the back of my head did literally "stand up"!!!
@@michaelthwaite3282 I have tried to like his pieces, but there's just something about them that I don't like. We sang his "Here is the Little Door" the other day. It's ok, but I clearly don't get the same satisfaction from it that other members get (they were in tears by the end). It's fascinating how different listeners hear different things
Lol, your comment was charitable in the end otherwise I would have been tempted to respond “well it’s not our fault your taste is bad.” Howells is fabulous haha
@@jbell0243 Haha I'm still not a huge Howells fan. I find the odd thing of his that I like though occasionally
So dramatic - and so satisfying to sing!
Are you soprano/alt/tenor or bass?
@@EinKritiker sop, but many years ago. Probably like a creaky door hinge now 😂
i really loved the 2nd soprano part on “for behold from henceforth”
My sister loves how they sing 😂😂
Even mine
WAKE UP
I loved singing this at the cathedral. One of my favorites along with the leighton and sowerby services.
I love reading this score, because it's marked by a bass/baritone (which is my voice level), so I "feel" as if I'm singing this.
The organ from 1:29 to 2:07 hits like an anvil .;,,,;.
Great description!
"juicy" 😀
