  • Soccer fans in Melbourne erupted in cheers in the early hours of December 1 when Australia scored their winning goal against Denmark to advance to the World Cup knockout stage. Australia won the match 1-nil after Mathew Leckie scored a goal, putting them through to the next round along with group winners France, despite their shock loss to Tunisia.

      Don't worry I'm not from either countries, but i want to see the Argentines beat Brazil once again just like they have done in the Copa America Final, I'm a fans of Brazil during the time of Rivaldo, the real Ronaldo the Brazilian one,,not the self acclaimed best player from Portugal who is deep down under Lionel Messi, the reason for stopping supporting the Brazilian is for their over showboating, from each player's, even Neymar showboating gets booeeddd by his own club during Barca time's n again in PSG, I didn't considered bicycle kick as showboating because the intention is to score a goal in a spectacular n beautiful way, not like that 360spin with the ball....

    Football is just as beautiful as crazy as it makes us. Beautiful because it brings everyone together from around the world , and then there's this thing called losing that creates a chaos amongst fans as one would imagine in apocalyptic scenes. Nothing creates this magic and madness at the same time like the world cup football does.

      It isn't really, there are groups of passionate fans, but AFL, cricket, league, union, tennis and netball are all more popular than soccer. Potentially even swimming, too. I think that's what makes losing to us even harder for countries who actually care about the game!

    • @s3tTz
      @s3tTz Год назад +3

      It's the most played sport. Plenty of Australians follow the EPL, La Liga, etc. But, not enough follow the local leagues from the A-League down. Melbourne Victory are far and away the best supported A-League team, averaging about 15,000 per game. As much as Sydney likes to huff and puff, Melbourne is the epicentre of football support in this country.

    • @doctordryan
      @doctordryan Год назад +1

      @@s3tTz yeah but that 15,000 figure says it all. Compare that to an average attendance at the AFL in Vic/WA/SA or NRL in NSW/ACT/Qld, it's just no competition

    • @truetoskyblue6952
      @truetoskyblue6952 Год назад +3

      In my part of Australia it would be the number one sport. It's the number one football sport nationwide in terms of participation at both junior and senior levels. The media, with vested interests in AFL and NRL try to keep a lid on the bubbling interest. I slightly disagree with some of my fellow Aussies here: Sydney FC is back at their home stadium and averaging 24K in crowd this year which is higher than all other clubs. As a person in their 50s, I've seen football go from virtually nothing in my lifetime to sustained popular interest. The games popularity is often measured by A-league attendances but that is wrong as many people prefer to watch euro leagues. That is the a-league's biggest challenge, not the other football codes. I can safely say I've been to some of the biggest matches around the globe in my life and yet the Sydney derby has regularly produced some of the best atmospheres I've ever experienced.

    Well done Aussies. Unfortunately the cool cold reality will come on Saturday 3rd December where Netherlands a consistent Powerhouse soccer nation awaits. Mind you in 2003 I saw Aussies thrash England 3-0

      We play Argentina on Sunday at 6am our time.(Australia). There will be more people in the centre of Melbourne and more across the country watching. Including me. Underdogs should never be underestimated.

      Cricket is huge in Australia, well it was until our Captain and Coach cheated. AFL and Rugby are our most popular, depending on where you live. They struggle to get 8,000 fans to show up to watch an A league game.
