It has nothing to do with god. He's talking about his girlfriend or wife, who has passed, ("Following down a trail of crumbs behind me, my heads in her hands, everything... it still feels wrong"), and he wants to follow her, but he knows it's wrong, and decides life is worth living... ("This isn't what I thought, so can I just go home?")
A very Christian allegory. Goes great with Romans 6: 21-23.
Edit: I can also appreciate the allusion to children's stories.
