    Thanks for the thorough explanations! I had a general idea of the community but this video really helped me get a deeper understanding about all the major aspects.
    Honestly at first I was skeptical about watching because of relatively low view counts. If I had done that I'd probably be banging my head on the wall haha. Bottom line is, your videos are great help to newcomers like me and deserve much more viewers who I'm sure you'll get. Keep up the good work!

    Thank you for all your awesome videos Jane! I have watched many of them as I am having two trips in North America in summer.
    I am positive to give couchsurfing a try! I have done two solo trips before. They are short trips yet I enjoyed the miraculous moments meeting many new people on a spontaneous trip! By just asking for the way in a terminal, I met another solo traveller German who we turned out travelling tgt for a while.
    But I got a problem in hosting someone. I live in Hong Kong, a city very famous for its crazy high price of property. As most of the other Hong Kong people, I can hardly host a person in my home. Worse still, I live super far away from the city centre.
    If I cannot complete step three, do you still recommend me to be a surfer in the coming trip? Will I be looking not reliable enough?

    • @WhatashameMaryJane
      @WhatashameMaryJane  5 лет назад +2

      Hello Ronald, such a pleasure to have you in our community of spontaneous travellers! Thank you for sharing your experience with us :)
      Don't worry too much for the lack of references, sure you can still find a host without having any reference at all. It's just going to be a bit more difficult, but many newbies don't even pay attention to the references when they decide to host someone, so you have good chances of finding a host anyway. Just balance the lack of references with a good profile and a very good request.
      As for hosting in Hong Kong, you don't need to wait for surfers to find your profile, you can reach out to them. You just go to the Couchsurfing page of your city and you'll find a section where the surfers who are coming to Hong Kong and are looking for a host. When you find someone you like, offer him/her hospitality in your tiny apartment :)

      Since I was thinking that it's just a cheapest way to get a free bed (which is least comfortable and quite selfish) I did not consider it as an option at all, but one I watched a few videos where the core purpose of this community was clarified, I was thrilled ) Because it is not just about uncomfortable and cheap housing, but it's about cultural exchange and being community, what I am passionate about!
      A bit late for this particular trip: I've already bought my tickets (april 2nd I will be in Frankfurt) and I will not have much time for collecting feedback or some good reputation that will let my potential hosts a confirmation that I am a good guy who has a lot to share etc )
      Nevertheless, everything in God's hands and I think I must use this chance. And I always can go for a cheap hostel, but I am sure you understand the missing part this option. So I want to not just be isolated from others and visit the event, but I want to have this exchange to happen because life is so short!

      ilive4god2007 I’m glad you discovered the core values of this community! Please consider to use it not only when you are travelling but also in your city: it’s actually a great way to “travel” even when you cannot move from your city, you can spend a weekend or a night with other groups of couchsurfers, meet new people and have a cultural exchange without having to take a plane. Hey there, currently watching the series. Unfortunately there are no travelers in the area I live, no one who use hangouts and only 36 active hosts out of 1160 registered within a radius of 10km. To get personal references I have to drive at least 30km in the next bigger city to (maybe) find someone to hang out.
    Nevertheless I am going on a hitchhiking trip soon and try to find some hosts, maybe a link to my airbnb profile will help to find one (I´ve got some references as a guest there), or when I arrive at one of my destinations I am looking for hangouts and hope to find someone to host me if they see me in person while we hanging out.
