I had this issue crop up randomly for months, dangerously I might add. Sometimes restarting got it to go away and other times no amount of off/on remedied the issue until it sat for awhile. I disconnected the entire pedal assembly (PA), removed the cover from the potentiometer housing and sprayed contact cleaner on the PCB contacts. I also disconnected the battery and let it sit while doing this. Then reinstalled the PA, reconnected battery and it went away. It made it close to a year and now it's back. Going to see whether simply unplugging both PA and battery and letting it sit for a bit then reconnecting is the temp fix or whether cleaning the contacts is it, or hell maybe the combination of the two. It's worth noting that there are numerous reports of owners taking their cars to the dealership and having a new PA installed only for the issue to return within months. Also various other supposed fixes from water from blocked sunroof drains pooling on an electronic component to the throttle body being the culprit. Seems to be a mystery as to what the permanent fix is, but OBD readout throws a pedal position/throttle position sensor error for me. This along with one or two other issues reared their ugly heads within 250 miles of the warranty expiring. Sometimes you'd think it's designed that way lol
Well I am a dealer mechanic and I do know that these things are designed to only last a certain amount of time and there are two concerns that are related to this water getting in the connector at the left kick panel area and the pedal assembly going out and a lot of times the aftermarket stuff doesn't cut it you have to get a dealer pedal assembly but again it's hit or miss I had mine done about 12 months ago and it hasn't returned
I also got the same problem on my Malibu and fixed it by cleaning the MAF sensor and throttle body. Also the turbo boost hose may come disconnected because the throttle body lip wears down over time. I stuck it back on with hairspray and a zip tied it to a heatsink behind and haven't had the problem since... Just another tip if this doesn't work for you.
I just try to show people easy stuff to keep their stress level down. I wanted to call myself the KETO MECHANIC lol then I was like ahhh just call yourself HOME
On Xmas Eve my 2017 Malibu engine light came in and started engine reduced. Call on Star they diagnosed it with the P2138. Took it to the dealer ship they said the same thing it’s the accelerator they are charging me damn near $600 to fix this issue. BecAuse it’s not covered under the power train warranty! If it was the Throttle Control it would’ve been free!
If you haven't done so, but the pedal for around 135 and pay a mechanic to install it. I'm going to be doing mine this week and install it my damn self. (2016 Malibu)

I have a Chevy Malibu LT 2017 and Has the same issue suddenly stopped and shows Power Engine Reduce, so what I did is I pull over to the side and restart my engine and went back to normal. . Then after a week it happened again. . It sucks & I hate it, should I go to my automechanic or is it easy to fix? & what could be the issue?
It's an easy fix it's two nuts that hold the pedal on underneath the dash and then if you follow the wire over to the left you basically unplug it throw that one away and then install the new one and you're done
@@fullcend-tkm73 Hey there thanks for responding I appreciate it. I have another question. So ive been driving my car since the Power Engine Reduce showed up & its been a month now. I actually took my car in a long drive 200miles away from home, it runs the same and the light "Power Engine Reduce" would go on and off at times. Will it damage my car if I didnt fix it right away ? Thanks again.
You need to replace the pedal assembly the whole entire assembly that you push the gas Because on the side of the pedal there's a sensor built into it Take the screws out of the back of it that mount to the car follow the wire over to the left unhook it install the new one bolt it down and plug it back in Please don't keep shutting off and then restarting it shutting it off and restarting it because you're consistently sending that information to the computer and it's going to build a bad fuel table just replace the pedal assembly

I have same issues they replace the pedal first time 2nd time there was a issue with throttle body I got reduced engine the car stopped on me on Express way

Let me first start out by saying I am a dealer mechanic for Ford not Chevy but I do work on Chevy's as well
My car was still under warranty and I thought that they would look at it and fix it
When the dealer looked at it they said that it was something that it was not to begin with and I left the dealership not satisfied with what they told me was originally wrong with it that water was getting in the connector in my video
Later the reduced engine power light came back on again and my uncle had the car at the time and had to take it to the Chevy dealer and they diagnosed it is the accelerator pedal position sensor which is built into the pedal itself
The dealer replaced the pedal assembly and the light never came back on again and they are currently trying to start a lawsuit against Chevy because they have created a faulty accelerator pedal assembly on the Malibus
So the second dealer basically felt bad for me having my time wasted the first time and they just did it for a little to nothing
Since then here at the Ford dealer I have replaced many of these pedal assemblies for customers that use the Ford dealer for their services on the Chevys
It's very easy to do it yourself it's basically Plug and Play
