  • In the 1950s 60s Taiwan, they were all caught up in the White Terror. Amidst the heavy-handed political persecution, they survived.
    But the White Terror was more than sufferings and adversity, they said. It was also about the passion for the nation, the yearning for social justice, and the socialist ideals against any kind of oppressions among peoples.
    This is their red, youthful days.
    Kuo, Chin-Hua (1928-)
    was born in Panqiao.
    Kuo Chin-hua was born in Panqiao in September 1928. There are four boys and four girls in the family, and Kuo was the youngest one. In 1944, Kuo graduated from the "Panqiao Civic School(板橋國民學校)", that is, the "Panqiao Public School(板橋公學校)" in the Japanese colonial period. After graduation, Kuo followed his father to be a carpenter for two years. However, he changed to other occupation because of acrophobia.
    After Taiwan recovery, in 1946, Kuo attended a "national language exemplary class(國語示範班)" at night. In 1947, he was 19, and served as a national language teacher at the "Kuishan Takang Elementary School(龜山鄉大崗國校)". In 1948, the Provincial Civic Affairs Office was recruiting teachers for mountain areas. Kuo, after being trained by the provincial training corps" for six months, was dispatched to teach at the Nanao(南澳) Elementary School in Taipei Peifeng area Nanao Township.
    In November 1949, Kuo got acquainted with underground party member Wei Chao-fu(魏朝福), who was then the headmaster of the Nanao Township Chinyuan Elementary School. Wei absconded in May 1950, and told Kuo Chin-hua to hide himself as soon as possible. In October 1950. Kuo Chin-hua and his classmate Lin Ru-peng(林如彭) were arrested in Paqiao(板橋), and another classmate at the Panqiao Public School named Chang Yi-rong(張倚融) was arrested at the same early day.
    In November 1950, Kuo was given a 10-year sentence, and in the following yea sent to Green. Island to serve his prison term. In October 1960, his prison term was due. Kuo went out of prison and engaged in carpentry together with another victim for about 2-3 years. Later, at his father's recommendation, Kuo began to work at the Taipei-based Lesheng Theater(樂聲戲院) as a handy man, and at last he was promoted to be in charge of the accounting work until retirement.
    In 1990s, from another victim named Tsai Kuo-chi(蔡國智), Kuo for the first time heard of the Political Victim Mutual Assistance Association. Afterwards, together with another victim named Wang Chuan-mei(王全美), he actively joined the activities held by the asociation.
