Before Pattern 83, There was Pattern 70
Developed based on modifications to the pattern 61/64 system (based on British post-war belt kit) pattern 70 was truly a by-infantry-for-infantry design that proved to be quite venerable for the scrappy South Africans. It ended up serving well until the mid 80s in the South African Border War, and held up much better to whatever the insurgents or mother nature had to throw at it.
It’s a classic webbing made of classic materials, but it’s still the best in it’s class. If you want to get some for yourself, we just got an enormous shipment in of the base kit along with the much rarer accessories that went along with it.

I have much of the old P70 gear that my parents were issued post their service when they served with the kommandos/reserves. And yes, both my mother and father served. Far longer than the minimum required. During the first few months of my mother's pregnancy with me, she was stationed at WPHQ in the Castle of Good Hope.
Can you do a comparison between this and Alice gear?
58 pattern comparison makes more sense
Same shit different ass really
I've used both systems
So the Alice is slightly more customizable as you decide where you want what pouch. BUT the Alice clips fit very loose and bounce around. These are fixed pouches that attach directly to the web belt so no unwanted flopping around of kit and you can configure the web belt with different size pouches. And it's ALOT stronger and functional than Alice gear
I'm a counter poaching ranger in SA I've been issued the pat 83 and I hate the battle jacket, love the chest rig so I took my old mans pat 70 out of storage and use it daily no issues and the more you use it the more comfortable it gets... and a new old stock in the surplus store is like 700r that's like 30 usd😂😂😂😂.so don't pay a premium at other stores they not that expensive
I have pattern 70 I found it in my grandmas closet sitting in there for over 20 years
I picked up one of the packs and after taking it on a short ruck, im loving it! You can fit two DSA FAL PMAGs in the side pouches, the straps are wide and comfortable, and for those with nixieworks lfrs, it works pretty well with the rig
The backpacks are quite rare AFAIK.
It's crazy how throughout history the most useful and least burdensome kit has come down to only two pieces of gear:
1. Chest Rig
2. Backpack
Fill her up with mags, land nav equipment, food, water, and your friggin' good to go.
Basically. I would argue that a belt and suspenders systems is more comfortable. But carrying a ton of gear and armor in a plate carrier is not something most of the tacticool larpers are actually going to be able to do for more than an hour or two.
@@Rokaize How do you personally wear a belt rig with a ruck waist strap?
@@ethme7648 ALICE system works just fine with that
It depends on the application. It's dumb to make such general statements
Here in ZA we pronounce MJ Du Toit as " De Toy " . . . .sounds like saying "the" with a blocked nose = De . . .and " toy " as a child's toy. . . . thus De Toy (Du Toit).
This is as result of linguistic corruption, so OP is technically pronouncing the surname correctly in a native French way.
just picked mine up! cant wait!!
Any chance of doing another run of your "Acidtarn" shirts?
Cool
luckily enough i got my hands on my dads old pack from when he served in the SANDF
Do you mean SADF by any chance? I served in the SANDF (post 94) and most SADF veterans would have an aneurysm if you told them they served in the SANDF😂
still have my dads old z88 and sadf kit
Can you do a video about how to put the webbing toghter
Lol ive got an original of this in my room, belt, rugsak and some of the webbing. Some of its in rough shap tho
