    I have been working on starting a small nursery.. I have propagated hundreds of hydrangeas. Mostly Annabelle, Blue and strawberry vanilla panicles. But I was gifted a small piece of Limelight. It was wilted, dehydrated and hardly enough a clipping to salvage., but I managed to save it. It’s perked up, rooting well and has gained a couple leaves.
    Excited to add it to my gardens. 🙏🏻💐💛

Since I have clay soil, and hot, dry summers and falls, I elected to plant in large pots. Both plants are from Proven Winners, delivered the day we hit 120 degrees! I thought I lost them over the winter, but those babies are in bloom one year later, not real bushy, just a few stems, but I am thrilled! I just bought 3 Little Limelight hydrangeas. They were shipped from Michigan, but got trapped in the snowstorm in Ohio. I live in the south, so they should arrive soon so I can get them planted before it gets hot. I already have some Strawberry Sundae and some Vanilla Strawberry hydrangeas. We have clay soil, and I planted them deep since it gets so hot and dry. I thought drought would kill them before the wetness would. Did I do wrong?? They are starting to leaf out, so I guess they are still alive.

    • @pwcolorchoice
      @pwcolorchoice  3 года назад +1

      Those will make some excellent additions to your garden! You don't need to plant deeper, but your older ones should be just fine. Just make sure not to amend the soil and plant directly into your native soil so the roots get established properly. Thanks for the question!

    I planted 5 Bobo’s here in the south full sun, 7b and disappointed that not only did the white blooms turn brown, but most of the leaves turned brown too. I found out that they don’t turn pink which is what I wanted. So I will dig them up and plant elsewhere. Should I do it this fall or next spring? The local nursery suggested Little Quickfire. I have a full sun situation. Will they turn pink? Will the foliage also fry? Thanks for your help. I have 5 bushes 🥲

    • @pwcolorchoice
      @pwcolorchoice  2 года назад +1

      Sorry to hear that! Fall is a great time for planting/transplanting and because you're in a warmer zone, it isn't too late for you to transplant them now.
      Bobo will turn pink - its flower color isn't one of the primary reasons it was selected (size/flower coverage are), so it will never be as amazing as one that was selected for color, like the new varieties, but it does turn a nice pink. If the whole plant was turning brown, that could indicate not enough water or too hot. In zone 7b, a bit of shade during the hottest part of the day certainly wouldn't hurt, but especially while they are getting established, they will need extra attention to make sure they don't get heat/drought-stressed. I'd recommend a good 3" layer of shredded bark mulch to help with that. Little Quick Fire definitely has bolder color than Bobo, but the same info above applies - it will need some TLC to get it established, and may not show its optimum flower color until it is established, especially in a warmer climate.

If they were planted several weeks ago and you're not noticing any issues with overwatering (mainly drooping, or yellow foliage), then I wouldn't do anything - just water carefully to avoid the "bathtub effect"

    Recently moved to northern Alabama (zone 7b) and guy at the local Gibbs nursery insisted that the Bobo Panicles would thrive in full sun. I explained that I meant south-facing all day sunrise to sunset kind of full sun. He reassured me and said yes. After seeing this video, I think I’ve been lied to. I bought six Bobos for front landscaping. Should I relocate them? These plants are too expensive to watch the wilt and die. I will did every last one of these plants up and return them if I need to.

    • @pwcolorchoice

      Your Bobos should do fine! Just make sure to have a good layer of mulch to keep the roots cool and monitor your watering. Panicles will survive in full sun as long as they have good care, giving them some shade just allows some more wiggle room for gardeners who don't want to have to monitor their plants as often.

    • @pwcolorchoice
      @pwcolorchoice  Год назад

      You are not an idiot, my friend! How much sun you want to give a hydrangea will depend on a few things - the first of which is what the exposure requirements are for that specific plant, it is typical with hydrangeas, especially Bigleaf, that the more sun they get the more prolific they will bloom (but again can be dependent on the variety). The second thing and what Judson is referring to in this video, is the high temperatures that can happen in different USDA zones. You will always want at least part-sun for hydrangeas, but depending on those other factors, how much sun can vary. It sounds like your bigleaf hydrangeas are doing well in their current location so as long as they are happy where you have them, there's no need to change anything 😊

    Will we ever see a hydrangea that grows well in the Central Arizona (9B, Phoenix) area? I have loamy soil and planted my last one (Strawberry Vanilla) in an area that only received morning sun for 2 hours and it flowered but quickly died after that. Most people here say not to even try. It just won't happen. But I feel determined. Temps get in the low 120s. Any tips or suggestions aside from your 5 to help those of us living in the underworld? LOL. Can I attempt full shade at these temps and still bloom?

    • @pwcolorchoice

      "The underworld" hahah! So your best chance would potentially be trying them in containers and placing them on a covered patio or something like that that is in complete shade during the hottest part of the day. You will want it to get a couple hours of early morning sun, though, so ideally, you'd find a place where the plant could get this without you having to move it. I would also recommend drip irrigation on a 2x/day schedule for five minutes (possibly more, especially during the hottest part of the year).

      Yes, you definitely can! It would be a good idea to give them a good 2-3" layer of mulch and just make sure you keep them well watered the first 2-3 weeks while they're getting established ☺

    What about rocks instead of mulch?

    • @pwcolorchoice
      @pwcolorchoice  4 года назад

      Rocks can be used but keep in mind that stone can hold more heat than mulch so if you are using them in a sunny area then you could be creating too much heat around the plant. Mulch is nice to help keep the base of the plant cool, which is useful in the south.

    • @kala9907
      @kala9907 4 года назад

      @@pwcolorchoice Thanks for the insight. I think did everything I wasn't suppose to do. I planted my Bobos three days ago on the west side, amended soil, and landscape fabric under river rocks but I have drip irrigation system and I do have a clearance zone of 3 inches diameter where there are not any rocks around the plant diameter. My zone is 8a (Atlanta, Georgia). Should I monitor the area or go ahead and transfer them?

    • @pwcolorchoice
      @pwcolorchoice  4 года назад

      @@kala9907 I would recommend at least cutting away the landscape fabric for a good 2’ square around the plant - that will help a lot. As for the amended soil, it can be okay provided it doesn’t get too much water, so as long as you are monitoring that, you might be able to get away with keeping them there. At a minimum, it will become clear very quickly if the plants are unhappy, and you will have time to move them to better conditions in this case.

    I am in 8b Tallahassee. I have a limelight and a little lime. I am not impressed with either. We don't get enough cool evenings in the fall for them to get a pretty pink. They get sort of a dirty biege. Not at all attractive. I'm probably going to throw them out.
