  • Investigating vulnerable coastal heritage: The Cherish Project at Glascarrig Medieval Settlement
The joint nation CHERISH project investigates climate change impacts on cultural heritage
The site of Glascarrig motte and bailey is located on a slight promontory overlooking the coast. It was probably constructed by the Anglo-Norman lord William de Caunteton at the end of the 12th century. The site is located in an area of glacial drift making it particularly susceptible to erosion. The Cherish Project uses a wide range of survey techniques to learn more about the archaeology of the site and also to monitor the condition of the site and the impact on it of erosion and increased storminess.
A video will be created for Heritage Week which outlines the range of techniques that have been used to record and monitor the site (UAV or drone mapping, Geophysical survey and rapid coastal zone assessment). It will present the results of these investigations so far and also indicate what additional survey and research will be carried out on the site as part of this project.
