I purchased Refugee for my 5th grader yesterday and he is really into it. The pace of the book is exactly as you described and he dove right into. My son mentioned this was the darkest book he has ever read. After reading a couple of chapters, I have to agree that the content is a little heavy for kids who are naieve and sheltered about these about these topics. Just wanted to give a heads up to parents considering this book.
@@i_likefrenchfries same I have to do reading responses everyday and i have to keep reading books and I have nothing else to read and epic says it’s after school hours so I can’t use that
Thank you for making these recommendation videos! As a first year teacher, it's great to hear insight about books kids already are known to like instead of just guessing for my own class.
Thanks for taking the time to comment! I love talking about the books in my library, and it makes me happy that you found it helpful. Enjoy your summer!
I want to thank you a lot. I haved loved reading books which my brother had but i wanna try something else but i didn't know where to start. This helped me a lot
I will check out The Carver Chronicles asap. Thanks for the recommendation. I am always on the hunt for more books to keep my selection feeling new and exciting. Whatever it takes to keep them reading!
Okay so I don’t teach bc I’m in fifth grade lol but I love because of Winn-Dixie and it is another book by Kate DiCamillo and I absolutely love that book it is one of my favorites but if you don’t already have that you should totally get it!
I recommend “The Distance Between Us” it’s about a Reyna Grande’s tragic past with her parents. This book was amazing I was reading it over the summer non stop! My sister gave me this book and told me if I wanted it, of course I said yes. I love love loved the book not only was it funny it was really heartbreaking. This is a 5th grade book and if you do AR this book is worth 11 points there’s also one for young readers you can also take that quiz since it’s practically the same and more AR points! This book was amazing it takes awhile to read but it’s worth it!!!
My daughter just started the 5th grade and has been reading a lot. One of the books we read together in Spring (because she and I like to read books and do the voices) was The Girl Who Drank the Moon (Kelly Barnhill). She liked it so much that when she started school last week, her ELA teacher, Mr. C, had a set of books each kid could borrow to read that they would then pass around to each other. She grabbed that one to re-read it (though we have our own copy at home) but she told her school friends they HAD TO read it next. Now, since we're currently taking in Afghan refugees, I think I'm going to turn toward Refugee as something to read together next. Thanks for sharing your insights and experiences on these books.
These are great books! I have read many of them and have recommended them to my sixth graders! I love that many of them are current and up to date! Thank you!
these are great ideas for me. I will be in fifth grade next year and I listen to a lot of books on audible - so I will check these out. thank you for posting this!
Hi. I'm homeschooling a rising 5th grader. Thanks for the recommendations. We'll try Paperboy, Elephant Run and Refugee. In 4th grade, he read ALL of The Diary of a Wimpy Kid books including Meltdown. Another one of his favorite books is Because of Winn Dixie. My middle son, the athlete, who is now a rising 11th grader, also enjoyed all of the Kwame Alexander books, and books by Mike Lupica.
This video is such a great resource for teachers and students looking for a great book to read. Thanks! I teach 5th grade in Florida- we read Refugee last year. We also read Esperanza Rising and The Wild Robot-😊
Looking for good books for my younger cousin and came across this video. Thank you so much for this! Whenever I look anywhere else the books seem to be very babyish and way too small and boring for my cousins advanced reading level.
Thanks so much, When you hold up the Wish book, I remember I read it months ago and definitely looking forward to reread that book again! Thanks for the book recommendations! I have an book recommendation called, “Out Of My Mind,” is a story of a girl named Melody who is diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and I’ve had read it over then 100 times! Nicole, Fifth grader
Currently reading Refugee to my class and loving it. It ties in well with our study of immigration and Ellis Island, as well as current events. Thanks for the great recommendations!
Refugee was a huge hit with my class! One small group made a board game based on the book for the rest of the class to play. Based on the difficulty level of the questions they created, I now know just how absorbed they were by the plot. LOL!

hi im in year 6 / grade 6 (im british)im trying to find new books i read atleast 2 hours a day! this really enjoy reading and i will definitly be trying out some of these books
I HIGHLY I mean HIGHLY recommend the series "Wings Of Fire" I feel like it's a GREAT book for 5th graders because I'm a fifth grader and I love it. At lunch I have a whole table with friends and everyone reads it except for one person. There are 3 arcs but the first one is about 5 dragonets (baby dragons) that are 6. (About 12 human years) that have to stop a war. There is a prophecy that tells them how to do it. It seems like the arcs have different themes like the first one is friendship, second is trust, and not sure the third because im only on the first one in the 3rd arch. I would also recommend "Restart" its about this boy that fell off his roof and got demisha and he has to restart his life. But he was a past bully so everyone hates him and does not trust that he changed.
Yes, especially with virtual school happening in many communities, there is even more screen time than before. When I was trying to increase a child's desire to read, one thing that worked for me was to read books that I thought the child would enjoy. (Yes, I started reading the children's chapter books.) Then, I would talk about the book like it was the BEST book I had ever read and try to generate some excitement for the book. If nothing else, I was modeling a love of reading. When kids see that excitement, they want to be a part of it. I wish you (and your daughter) happy reading!
@@TeachersPlaybook Than you for the reply. It just seems like everything i try doesn't work. I'm a huge reader and have a 200+ book library. I spend a lot of time looking up books i think she'd like but there's no interest at all. I even offer to read with her.
I’m really looking for a book about a Korean girl that lives in Korea (north). She lives with her mom and 3 or 4 brothers. Her dad was taken away to fight in the war and all she wants is for him to come back. They then had to leave Korea because it was very unsafe. That’s all I got from. I’m dying to refind it but it’s so hard to find it because I don’t know the name nor the author. If anyone knows a book like that, please let me know. Maybe it could be the book I’m looking for.
