  • Tchaikovsky made the piano arrangement to his "Nutcracker" ballet music himself. The March is one of his most known tunes that immediately summons the Christmas spirit with its high energy marching features. Any ballet production tells the story of toy soldiers coming to life, but in this video we look at the music only. Henrik Kilhamn, piano.

Correction: The March is only the second movement in the Nutcracker suite, Op. 71a, that Tchaikovsky arranged as a suite for orchestra (i. e. without ballet dancing). In the ballet, Op. 71, there is a Scene (The Christmas Tree) between the Overture and the March.

Nice video! I never knew that Tchaikovsky made a piano arrangement of this himself. I’d only ever heard the arrangement by Pletnev.

I'd like to see an analysis video of "December" from Tchaikovsky's "Seasons" suite for piano. This charming little waltz could have easily been included as part of the Nutcracker Suite.

at 1:06 Beethoven also does this in his famous Symphony no 7 allegretto. His repeat of the material but the second time in a whisper renders it almost unrecognizable from the original repetition even though they're the exact same notes and chord progression. he plays a lot of tricks of repetition in this piece to great effect. In fact until the slow part, it's almost all the same material, yet it feels like you've been on a journey once it ends.
