    I love playing Bela on the Piano this is the first time I have heard his music on a banjo...which makes sense since his focus was on Folk Music from Hungry.

    It’s beautiful on the banjo. Brings out the sadness

    This is so fantastic on so many levels. Bartok's piano pieces are hardly ever performed, and this banjo arrangement is beautiful and infused with love and truth. Béla and Abigail have wonderful rapport (hm wonder why?). It's great to see Abigail busting loose in the piece they segue to.

    Just lost all of my sheet music collection, including Bartók arrangements for guitar, in the Hermit’s Peak Fire last spring. This performance has-as Abigail and Béla performances have managed to do so many times before-rekindled interest, and a desire to rebuild that lost asset. My thanks to them for every instance of such inspiration over the decades.
    Time to finally visit the UNT music library and book stores to browse the sheet music offerings.
    Oh, wait. Maybe I can find them online now!

      there's a story in there... i'd bet you could make some hay out of the effort to recreate your tragically incinerated collection. Wishing you strength and courage from NYC. Hope that counting your blessings also helps.

      Good luck to you. I have been lucky all my life, especially making it through cancer, chemo and open heart surgery. After initially struggling with depression and defeatism, although I consider myself a cancer veteran rather than survivor, I found that these adversities bring with them opportunities, too. The forest is burned, but in the forest's case, the burning turns out to be beneficial in some ways. The forest is renewed, sometimes with new species that contribute to its diversity and richness.

    Ironic that his family wouldn’t allow this as the tunes were likely transcribed by Bartok from Eastern European folk music.

    • @guickdotto4552
      @guickdotto4552 Год назад +6

      First melody I recognise from his collection of tutorial pieces derived from Slovak folk tunes.

    • @avandras
      @avandras Год назад +5

      @@guickdotto4552 It's a well known Hungarian folk tune (mostly with the beginning 'Szegénylegény vagyok én') - which still doesn't exclude the possibility that it exists in the Slovak tradition as well.

      @lajosmiklos8863 Год назад

      To be accurate, this is an original COMPOSITION Bartók wrote from the ‘transcribed’ piece. If Fleck and Washburn were to perform the transcription or their rendition of the original folk tune Bartók’s family would have no say in the matter. No irony here; makes total sense.

    I recognized “Flapperette” from my time learning banjo from Bela’s cassette tape series. There’s like an 8 fret stretch in the middle…in Bela’s words “not user-friendly”

    Outstanding! I believe Bela's banjo is tuned to GDGB-G Low.And octave below the regular tuning, on a special instrument made for these purposes.

      Guitarist here, I’ve been teaching myself clawhammer for a couple of months. All it takes is repetition. Set up a metronome on a slow tempo and play bum-ditty’s on a loop until it starts to make sense. Of course there’s waaay more to it than that but that’ll get your foot in the door at least!

      I have found in frailing getting accurate with my right hand I play a melody hitting each individual string ,doing this it becomes easy to find most of the chords in the melody.
      I want to try 3 finger style but a grand child broke my thumb pick .im almost 62 with a back ground in sheering .stiff old hands but I love it.

    I'm still a fan of that recording of the Villa-Lobos concerto for harmonica, Urania (I also see Naxos). I used to listen to it along with that Louie-Louie Variations on mandolin; it doesn't realize that banjos would work for it, yet too (hopefully?). That last is a long slide to its out, but what a slide... :)
