Worked at A International AirPort for 35 years. This is mostly Fear Mongering Bull Crap!
Appreciate your experience. Our goal isn’t fear-it’s helping everyday travelers avoid surprises that still catch many people off guard.
@DaveRobinson-sb9qz "Worked at A International AirPort for 35 years" does not mean you are up to date with the latest technology.
I've done a lot of traveling. I've worn most of these types of clothing. No issues whatsoever. Bad Ai video.
I WAS ASKED TO GO INTO A PRIVATE ROOM IN DOALA, CAMEROON, WEST AFRICA. THEY WANTED TO COUNT MY MONEY WHICH WAS WITHIN THE LIMIT. THEREAFTER THEY ASKED FOR MONEY NON-THE LESS. MANYOF MY COLLEAGES EXPERIENCED THE SAME. THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST CORRUPT AIRPORTS I HAVE EVER BEEN.
Not if you're flying into or out of Israel.
Those boys are masters of pre flight surveillance.
Going to the dentist is more comfortable than visiting an airport IMO/IME.
😅 Airports aren’t exactly a spa experience. A little prep and knowing the rules can reduce 80% of the stress though.
Well, this is the reason why I do not fly anymore. A theater where they pretend that you are an estimated client, but in reality, they treat you with no dignity at all! Good that trains and buses are still reasonably OK. Reasonably. Of course, the number of cameras here and there is constantly growing, but still far away from the airport standard... I wonder how could people so easily get used to be constantly monitored and evaluated, by security officers or, even worse, by AI systems. You try to address how to be less visible in all this, but it's time to question all this whether it is even morally OK and the security is worth of the price of completely lost privacy!
Yes. Id rather have root canal or extraction or even listen to my ex nag!😮
@ferdinandfrozenstein"Those who forsake essential liberty for safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. " -Benjamin Franklin
Some people layer up on clothing,if there going to cold locations and may not have the room in their case.
Absolutely true. Many travelers layer clothing simply because space is tight. It’s not always about “gaming the system” - sometimes it’s just practical packing.
Seattle is commonly been known where almost everybody wears layers.
You remove the jackets before you get scanned
so having social anxiety causes me to be randomly searched each time bless
You’re not alone - stress itself can make the process feel worse 😅 The good news: “random” really is random, not personal.
Stupid ignorant video!!!!!
I got stranded in korea for 10 days because of this.
Wow - that’s rough. International medication and visa issues are where things get serious fast.
Most people don’t realize how strict some countries are until it happens.
If you’re open to sharing - was it medication, paperwork, or immigration that caused the delay?
So basically, if you buy a plane ticket you are a suspect until proven otherwise.
Not a suspect - just part of a system built around risk screening, not guilt.
Most travelers pass through without any issue at all.
exactly. back in the day, everyone was upper middleclass and treated accordingly. now you are just a prisoner transfer!
😂
What happens to your bag after you check it is they start going through it to see what they can steal. If you don’t understand this, you don’t know anything about it.
When airports start to charge fair rates for food and drinks I will start to get impressed.
Fair point 😅 Airport food prices feel like a luxury tax. Until that changes… snacks from home still win.
It Is kind of funny when they get me because of my menopausal sudden sweating :DDD
My opinion is, I as a normal passenger who wants to get from A to B am gonna watched constantly, while wrongdoers still can find their way to cause as much trouble as they can.
Totally get that-body scanners flag normal things all the time. A quick secondary check doesn’t mean you did anything wrong
True, you are carrying the same weight whether you put it in your checked luggage or carry on.
I put lil pieces of paper in certain areas in my suitcase that would fall out or move if the bag was opened...so far so good
Clever trick! Just remember: TSA can still open any bag if needed. If you want extra peace of mind, a TSA-approved lock is the safest option.
For what ?
That won't cure your paranoia.
@AvoidFlightBans IMO, a TSA lock is the same thing as no lock. You'll never know if people were in your stuff. If the lock is cut, NOW you know.
I've had my checked bag opened by TSA. They leave an 8 by 11 sheet inside stating your bag was opened.
I get pulled for additional screening every time. I no longer fly. I have nothing to hide, I never have. The problem is I always fly alone. So don't tell me that they don't profile single flyers. I also only have one carry on bag that is smaller than most luggage. But my wardrobe no matter what is cargo shorts, polo shirts and the shoes on my feet.
I don't generally take a computer, just me and my phone. So I guess they think I am some kind of criminal. I haven't been on a plane now since 2010. Doubt I ever will again. I generally never travel more than 8 hours from home. When it takes you an hour to get to the airport, then 1.5 to 2 hours to get to the gate and another hour to get boarded taxied and out, then anithe 30 minutes to get off plane and get to the person picking you up and another hour to get to your final destination. You have already spent more than half of your time getting there. So now say you fly an hour or 90 minutes. You only saved about 3 hours on a 8 hour drive. Is that e hours really worth the cost of the ticket, maybe rental car, long term parking at the airport?
I hardly think so. A 500 mile trip is not worth flying, a 1000 mile barely. Unless my trip is over 1k miles I will drive thank you. Before 9/11 when you could fly off days on a 1,000 mile trip for 99.00 or a 500 mile trip for 49.00 and no TSA it was different.
That's the way I see it. So airline's, I am not your customer.
Hey Vince, I get why you feel that way - if every trip means extra screening, the ‘time saved’ can disappear fast. And you’re right: for 500-1,000 miles, driving often wins once you add check-in, security, boarding, and ground time.
Here’s the part most people don’t realize though… the extra screening usually isn’t about what you wear or flying solo - it’s a mix of travel patterns, randomness, and how the scanner flags items. Small things (like how pockets/electronics are staged) can tip the odds.
Curious: when you did fly, was it mostly security or were you getting stopped at the gate with SSSS? That detail changes the fix.
@AvoidFlightBansWas always security never once at the gate. Being single I believe was main reason. But what is weird I was always pulled for outbound never for return. That makes me think I was somehow a terrorist. Born and raised in this country no wierd accent, never nervous, never anything to hide. So I just don't understand why outbound every time but not return unless they figured I was safe first direction I would be safe return.
Not like I flew a lot usually once every few years. The only possible trigger I could even think about was every trip was unplanned and tickets purchased under a week before flight.
I did a fair amount of travel for work but agree about the real time of air travel - sometimes I did opt for the car and enjoy road trips. The frequency of getting extra screening makes me wonder if maybe someone with similar name is on a no fly list
@marksteinhauser3779Well since I have an uncommon last and first names it's not too likely. They never question my ID they just want me in a different line. Never opened my belongings never took me to a room. Just did a deeper scan with wands. I don't get it.
All this, plus mobility issues, means that I have not gotten in years. Driving with frequent pit stops is so much better
When I had long hair, I almost always got "randomly selected" for extra inspection. Since I cut it short about 15 years ago, it hasn't happened once!
Interesting observation. “Random” selection isn’t based on hair length, but scanners do react to density and anomalies. Could’ve been coincidence - but I get why it felt patterned.
I can relate. Also, bike leather jacket and rings/piercings/etc. didn't seem to be awfully helpful, either! 😅🤦♂️ (Yea, I've been "randomly selected", my arse!)
Layering up in clothing is where it’s at. Also I only try and pack a carry on if possible so much less headache! ❤
Exactly - layering and carry-on only solves half the airport problems before they start.
Out of curiosity: what’s the one item you never travel without in your carry-on?
Okay, now I understand why the airport always treats me like a walking red flag.
Up till now my ‘strategy’ has basically been: wear the comfy hoodie, sprint through the terminal, pray my bag shows up, and call it a day. No wonder the system keeps noticing me. Guess it’s time to retire the chaos hoodie, stop packing right up to the weight limit, and start dressing and moving like the most boring, predictable passenger in the building.
You nailed it 😄 Looking “boringly predictable” really does make travel easier. Calm, light, and under the limits is the winning formula.
Don't be dumb its not what you wear its how you act I wear all of the clothes he had in video & I never get any problems & Im black even when I check in high af
@AvoidFlightBansbs
Dont know with the hoodie. Never had a problem
Ditch the hoody for good every where
Random is not fair. I am glad they are not wasting time on people who clearly are not a threat and letting more suspicious characters go through.
True - security aims for efficiency, but fairness is always a tough balance.
On a different note, I overslept the day of my flight. I arrived to the airport 15 minutes before the plane gate was to be closed, dressed as a bag lady. Nobody at the airline counter, ran like a maniac straight to Security, passed, then was about to break down when I couldn’t find the gate, found it, scanned my ticket and boarded at the very last second. I was carrying three bags (Airline only allows 1), and got an entire row of seats for myself. Oh, did I forget to say it was a one way ticket? So, I don’t know if I should believe this video because I ran over all the red flags, and made it, getting extra perks for free.
You got lucky - and gate agents do have discretion. But that’s exactly the point: sometimes you breeze through, other times the same behavior gets flagged. My goal is helping people reduce the odds, not saying it happens 100% of the time.
Happy
What year was this?
cool story. could use more dragons.
You perfectly fit their profile of a panicked woman who doesn’t travel often. Eye rolling but not a threat.
For those who fear I'll add that airport have just secretly checked them during watching this video and marked into top secret list.
😂 If that were true, half of RUclips would be on a “top secret list.” Watching travel videos doesn’t flag you - packing the wrong thing might though.
😂
The best thing to wear to the airport is 16 inch lace up boots. That way you get to inconvenience everyone in line behind you while you take them off
Ah yes… the ‘let’s test everyone’s patience’ boots 😂
Fast shoes are the real airport superpower.
Nope. They just take you to a restricted area where you can take them off in your own time and miss your flight.
I am now terrified of ever flying again ...
Don’t be terrified 😄 Most of this just means being prepared. Know your bag size, batteries, and liquids-and you’ll be fine.
As you should be , under the new world fascism.
Unless you can spare thousands for legal defense, just dont fly! Hit these little tin fascists in the wallet.
Thanks, very informative. A suggestion, it'd be interesting to have a location caption for each airport. Some of them look familiar, but I can't place them.
Great idea - we’ll start adding airport locations in future videos. Thanks for the suggestion!
Indeed it is something I never knew or had any idea of. This is a very helpful information. Thanks for sharing.
Glad it helped 🙌 That’s exactly why we share this - small details save big headaches.
So your luggage is like registered mail?
Pretty much - bags are increasingly being tracked, weighed, and verified by airlines, like registered mail. It’s more about enforcement and fees than a brand-new system.
6:05 the only airport that looks worse than a disorganised bus stand
Sadly accurate 😅 Some terminals really do feel like organized chaos. Design hasn’t kept up with passenger volume in a lot of airports.
Looks just like some gates at Melbourne airport
Nice video but I’ve played it at 1.25x speed. I almost fell asleep…
Haha, fair enough 😄 I’ll work on tightening the pacing in future videos. Thanks for still giving it a watch!
There are higher speeds than that!! I listen toall vids faster, and skip the important info, as well!!
It's 100% AI slop
I listen to this and every narrated video at 1.4x
To be perfectly honest, I’m not too worried about most of that
That’s fair. Many travelers won’t be affected-but for those who are, these tips can prevent last-minute surprises.
@AvoidFlightBansOh, I may very well be affected. But not to the point where I would then be unable to board my plane. For example, so what if my clothing is too fancy for a short flight? Im probably on my way to a business meeting.
When I used to fly, this was only true for airports in the USA. It happend only one time that the officer's terminal froze - for a few minutes - and his gaze became more astonished and admiring with every passing minute.. :-)) He told me he had never experienced this before.
I take that as a compliment that I am not as boring as the usual passengers are.
Terminal freezes definitely get attention 😅 Usually it’s just a system lag or extra verification - not a compliment… but hey, memorable traveler status unlocked.
Total click bait. Nearly everything on the list, I’ve worn on a flight with no problem. Clothing that doesn’t match the destination climate? Stupid. If I depart from where it’s 30 degrees, but it’s 80 at my destination (this was the case just last year), just how is that gonna work? I’m doing it again this year. Have I been patted down? Yes. But it’s due to me wearing medical devices, & the metal in my body. It’s not because of what I’ve been wearing.
No , you were not profiled . This is a list of if they want you they will get you you basically just said nobody wants you.
@illzwillzwatuz963 so in more than 50 yrs of travel, you want me to believe that it’s because I was never profiled? 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Totally hear you. Clothing for climate alone doesn’t trigger anything - and you’re right that medical implants or metal in the body are a common reason for extra screening. The point isn’t “what you wear,” it’s how multiple small factors sometimes stack together.
That’s fair. It’s not about being “profiled” as a person - it’s about certain behaviors or patterns that sometimes get extra attention. Most travelers pass through without any issue at all.
And who knows what the temperature will be on the plane..
Highly worthy tips. Thank you
Thank you - really glad these tips are useful. Any topic you’d like us to cover next?
Very helpful and insightful comments. Thank you
Appreciate that! Glad the tips were useful. Safe travels out there ✈️
I used to travel a lot for business. Every time I wore a suit I was flag. I couldn’t figure out why
Funny how that works 😅 Sometimes “too formal” gets more attention than casual.
Appearing as anything other than the "Grey Man" can get you flagged.
What happens to your bag? Mine is searched every time, and the TSA leave a card in the bag stating that it was randomly selected for extra inspection. At one point I had ten such cards stapled together - but eventually the TSA must have realised the joke was on them, so they took the cards.
That TSA card just means your bag was opened after screening - usually random, sometimes triggered by dense items, electronics, or wiring shapes. It’s not a mark against you, and it doesn’t follow you to future trips.
Staying home is bliss. How are you supposed to be faking calmness?
Honestly… half of calm travel is pretending you’re calm 😅
Tiny trick that helps a lot: arrive earlier than needed and sit somewhere quiet before security.
What part of flying stresses you the most - security, crowds, or delays?
@AvoidFlightBans the calmest looking person is the person with something to hide. they are aloof, it is his business not to get caught. this brings in psychology.
The only reason why I put so many layers of clothes when I travel from Florida to the Midwest is because the airline only allow you to carry a tiny backpack, so I bring all my clothes on me, and but my toiletries at Dollar Tree once I arrive to my destination.
Layer travel is becoming a survival strategy 😅 Smart move on toiletries-pack light, buy cheap at your destination, and avoid the baggage drama.
What exactly are routes considered sensitive?
Sensitive routes often include areas with heightened security concerns, restricted zones, or international borders with stricter checks. Always check airline and government guidance before flying.
Yay, so we have make sure that their life becomes easier while they make sure that our flight is harder and harder by the year.
I hear you. It feels like rules get stricter every year. Knowing them ahead of time is sadly the only way to keep the trip from getting harder.
that is the american way!
@AvoidFlightBans like with any cop; once they know you know all the rules. they put you down as a trouble maker and give you a bad ride.
At many provincial airports, most airport security is just theatre. They haven't got the time or the resources. It's just a deterrent. They randomly check just regular people to keep up appearances.
You’re partly right - there is a deterrent effect built into the system.
But here’s what surprises most travelers: a lot of screening is driven by algorithms + scanner behavior, not just appearances.
Question for you: have you noticed certain airports being much stricter than others?
@AvoidFlightBans The big international ones for sure, particularly in the likes of China etc. I once accidentally put a military combat knife in my hand luggage. I realised it was in there and took it out of the bag with my electrionics etc. It was in full view, went through the scanner in the tray, and I was expecting to be lose it and be challenged. There were numerous armed police around, standing in groups. The knife just came through the other end. I repacked everything and boarded the aircraft. No one even noticed it or even blinked. Shocking I know. At the same time some people were getting grief for have a too large a bottle of sunscreen. The airport was a large busy Western European one. Not some tiny place in the middle of nowhere. The knife was exactly the sort of thing that should have been picked up, and it wasn't even hidden!
Such as when I was asked at an airport in Toronto to confirm my name, where I was from, reason for the journey and where I was staying in Canada.
Yes, that’s a very common set of questions at immigration. They’re mainly confirming travel purpose and where you’ll be staying.
22:14
“People who dress too -ELEGANT- ELEGANTLY for short flights.”
Sometimes comfort > elegance… especially at 6am 😂✈️
Can't really play it safe with these a-holes, no matter watcha do. They're gonna getcha, one way or the other! 😅
I can't care less if they check me or my luggage because I have nothing to hide, nothing illegal on me.
Totally fair 👍 Most checks are about safety, not suspicion. If everything’s compliant, it’s usually quick and done.
As a disabled vet full of titanium hardware it gets old being automatically flagged and forced to answer invasive questions and prove my injuries. I pulled up my sweat pants leg once after my 5th surgery to show them the repulsive scars on my legs, one lady almost puked and they just said go.
That sounds incredibly frustrating. Medical implants and hardware can absolutely trigger extra screening. You shouldn’t have to prove injuries like that - requesting a private screening is usually the better option.
I dream once to leave sometimes on vacations without luggage and only t-shirt and shorts on.
That’s the dream 😅 Carry-on only is freedom. Just make sure you know the liquid and battery rules before you try it.
I'm a heavy sweater, I sweat at the drop of a hat, even in cold weather. Depending on what Im doing. I hate going through security while sweating. Knowing that I'm most likely drawing unwanted attention - I start sweating more..! I can't win..🤣😂🤣‼️
The security sweat is real 😂 Happens to the best of us!
Just like the episode of Seinfeld, where Gorge looked very suspicious sweating profusely because he ate the spicy Kung pow chicken lol 😂
Over many years of travel I have seen treatment or had treatment that reflect the comments in this video. In my latest trip with the most advanced scanning technology I was flagged for special handling. The system decided my groin area needed scrutiny. It was all that I could take to remain calm as I was gropped and molested - not by a girlfriend or a doctor. Knowing all the while that if I said anything I would not be allowed to board. I would have preferred if they had taken me aside and asked me to drop my pants or even underwear. Of course the bad experiences are a low percentage, but with billions of travelers and trips the stories accunulate.
James, I’m really sorry you went through that - experiences like this are extremely uncomfortable, and you’re right: the lack of privacy is often the hardest part.
Most people don’t realize those scanners flag anomalies, not intent, and officers then have very limited discretion.
Out of curiosity - did they explain anything to you afterward, or was it just done and over with?
I have had my bags multiple times. Ever time it ha a tsa inspection tag inside.
That tag usually means a random or automated scan flag, not something you did wrong.
Quick question: does this happen more on domestic flights or international ones?
Is this a video about how to smuggle contraband through an airport? Because, as an attorney, it sounds suspiciously like that.
Opposite. The entire point is compliance - what not to do so you don’t get fined, flagged, or denied. Staying within the rules is the strategy.
once we having problems with both departing and arrival airports, the staffs were suspiciously and excessively scrutinizing of our bags... latter on it found out that the culprit is a simple keychain. ..it was bought at Disneyland; a metal standing Tinkerbell figurine attached on my house key.. the wings of the Tinkerbell creates shapes like a pair of scissor from the X-ray machines perspectives and the airport staffs found it difficult to find where was my hidden scissor located. ...only at the last airport they finally figure out what the scissor really is, and they told me about it.
That Tinkerbell keychain story is wild 😅 Great example of how innocent items can confuse X-ray machines!
I always travel wearing T-shirt, jeans, and hiking boots and never had any problem. I never had any problem when checking in my luggage and carry on bag either.
Exactly. Simple clothes and sensible packing usually mean smooth travel-no drama at security or the gate.
Last time I flew, I flew so rarely that my boots had metal loops, I forgot to take off my belt and watch, and had change in my wallet, which I also forgot to take out. I got pulled aside, long before body scanners, before shoe removal was mandatory, but after 9/11.
Been a frequent flyer since early 80's. 98% of the time I fly alone on business, and I have rarely had any problem.
That’s great to hear. Experienced travelers often know exactly how to avoid most airport issues.
Whatever, when I was flying between Hawaii island and Seattle I got to the point that when I didn't get a pat down I wails say "where's the love?"with a smile. Sometimes TSA smiled ... main thing is to make sure your carry on is clean. And of course always claim your firearms when flying w them...
Clean carry-on + calm attitude = fastest TSA combo 😄 And yes - always declare firearms, no shortcuts there!
I haven’t flown in 15 years and don’t plan on anymore. Too much hassle. My next flight is off the planet for good. Until then I’ll drive.
Flying isn’t for everyone - and that’s okay. But when you do need it, knowing the system makes it a lot less stressful.
2:04 that clothing is checked as it goes through the x-ray conveyor
Exactly - that’s why pockets & layers matter 👌
I get pulled over on almost every international flight
I found it it’s because I travel with 3-4 cell phones and 2 iPads 😅
It’s work stuff but apparently they don’t like it
Multiple phones + tablets absolutely raise eyebrows on international routes. It’s not illegal - it just increases screening probability.
Worked in a hospital ED near Kennedy Airport .Passenger going round trip to Columbia SA with no bags, no camera .. He was forced to come to our ER for trays to role out being a mule. He was negative but pissed.
Wow… yeah, situations like that do happen. Travel patterns can raise red flags, even when someone’s completely innocent.
I could care less how many times they check me randomly..
They're wasting their own time.
As long as I get to where I'm going..I could care less.
Fair enough 👍 If you follow the rules, most checks are just background noise.
Makes me feel special...lol
They are getting paid.... with OUR TAX MONEY. All because fckn capitalist provoked oil countrys to retaliate against American zionist crimes
Security staff are trained to watch behaviour...😲
Exactly - behavior is a huge factor 👀 Calm travelers move faster.
What routes are considered high risk?
“High risk” usually depends on travel patterns - frequent short trips, one-way tickets, last-minute bookings, or certain transit hubs. It’s more about profile than a specific country.
Just have more years that you don't fly. Once every five years is plenty.
Honestly… that’s a stress-management strategy more people should consider 😅
When you do fly, what part annoys you the most - security, crowds, or delays?
One of my bags was obviously opened on a trip from the US to the UK. Obviously, they were alerted by the three cake mixes that I was smuggling into the country. ;-)
International cake trafficking… bold move 😄
Powders + food always make scanners nervous - even when it’s just dessert plans!
Monarch Airline! Now there's a crappy blast from the past!
Haha, that name really is a blast from the past. Aviation history never fully disappears!
I had an expensive Spyderco knife "Disappear" while the bag was checked. I hope someone is enjoying it.
Ouch… that’s rough.
Checked bags do get opened, and small valuables go missing more than people think.
Did you report it or just let it slide?
Oh look at all those comfy clothes that they don’t want to see.
Comfortable travel clothes are common - security usually focuses on screening, not clothing style.
What happened to Number 12? Seems someone forgot to add the last one.
Good catch! Looks like we skipped it in the edit. We’ll make sure the full list is complete in the next upload-thanks for pointing it out.
19:20 worth a subject access request in the UK!
That’s a great point. In the UK, you can file a Subject Access Request to see what data is held on you - but it won’t override security or airline screening decisions.
Listening to this, it seems that everyone is a suspect…
It can feel that way sometimes 😬 But most checks are about patterns, not people.
That is why you are much better off just staying home and finding hobbies or activities around the house.
Simple, use a rubber dinghy to get into the country of your choice - plus you'll get free accomodation and medical care upon arrival. At least it does when you want to go to the UK.
😅 Let’s stick with planes and passports - much safer and more comfortable!
Alrighty then!
So what this video says is that;
"if you don't wanna be harrassed and stressed out, no more air travel... Stay at home & STF,Up?
Or... Be like,
Jason Bourne?
C'mon!😳😕🙄
Not at all 🙂 The message isn’t “don’t travel.” It’s “know the system so it doesn’t stress you.” Big difference. Travel smart > stay home.
No wonder they removed my two big power banks of 300,000 MAPHs so sad
That one hurts 😅 At 300,000 mAh, those are way above the airline battery limits - most cap it around 100-160 Wh.
Quick question: were they in your carry-on or checked bag when they were taken?
When I traveled in SE Asia, I was "randomly" selected for questioning so often that it did not seem random at all. I later figured out the reason: I was traveling with my passport that was renewed by the embassy of my home country because I am a permanent resident living abroad. This must have caused red flags to go up.
That actually makes sense 👀 certain travel patterns or documents can trigger extra checks-even if everything is fine.
Mad talker got nightmares 😂😂😂
If knowing the rules gives nightmares… imagine learning them at the checkpoint 😅 Better stressed on RUclips than at Gate B12.
I once loved this Isuzu kb truck up until l got a boss who was driving one.
Sounds like that truck carries some history 😅
So these days - are you more of a road trip person, or do you still fly sometimes?
With my pacemaker and titanium rib wiring all airport alarms go off.
That happens quite a lot with medical implants. You can usually request a manual screening instead.
The title was not quite fit for the video.
Fair point - thanks for the feedback. We try to balance clarity with attention, and I’ll work on making future titles match the content more closely.
I always get a note in my bag. But I basically travel in my underwear and pack NO electronics. Am I not boring enough for them? Or the bag guy was pissed off because he couldn't steal my digital camera that I didn't take.
😂 Probably neither - inspection notes are almost always random or triggered by how items stack in the scan.
Here’s the twist: empty-looking bags sometimes get checked more often than full ones.
Does it happen on every trip or just certain airports?
@AvoidFlightBans I've only flown once in the past twenty-ish years. Not a fan of paying to be treated like a criminal. Plus it's simpler to just drive since I don't have the logistics of renting a car once I get there. Or the delays in the interest of security. 3 hours early for a 1 hour flight? How much time am I saving by flying? Literally NONE.
If all this is true how come so many obviously unwell, obviously drugged or drunk and obviously beligerent passengers are allowed to board. This is just nuts!!
Sadly true 😬 Security checks objects first - behavior is handled more by airlines and crew.
I pay for the ticket, and I want to travel as it is most convenient for me. With comfortable or fashionable cloth, with heavy luggage, and with late booking. The security shall do their job, checking everybody so nothing bad happens.
That’s a fair view - many travelers value freedom and consistency over speed.
The tricky part is balancing personal comfort with system-wide safety.
Curious: what part of airport screening bothers you the least right now?
My left eye has a nervous tick which always gets triggered by travel.
That’s tough 😕 travel stress can trigger things like that-hopefully planning ahead helps a bit.
@AvoidFlightBans Yes I usually take painkillers as my tick is accompanied by a migraine. With the numerous plane incidents I mostly avoid flying…. Will feel significantly less stressed once our pilots are replaced with AI. 🤗
Eh
- Travel super-light
- Checked luggage is for clothes and everything you can afford to lose the minute you land.
- Pack anything you care about to be on your person a book-bag/back-pack and keep it tight. A laptop-bag with absolutely everything you expect you need. Take whatever pain you have to endure it, right there. Maximum eyes while you are there.
- Eat something with fiber and keep food simple the day before travel and eat fresh. Also remember to get to the bathroom the moment you land, the moment your connector lands.
- Book your travel with lots of time, arrive 2 hours early - always - why - because the worst thing that happens is you sit for a bit and give yourself a break.
- Travel off-hours when you can - late-night flights are great, just think about whether you will have transportation at your destination, and plan around that.
- Unusual thermal patterns - everyone who ever had to make a connection flight or arrived late or hates flying.
Solid list 👌 Traveling light + keeping essentials on you solves 80% of airport stress. Early arrival = the cheapest insurance policy.
#13. The entire checked baggage weight policy is a scam. When they tell you that you must take items out of your checked baggage and put them in your carry-on, they're still going on the airplane. It's just a scheme to get more money out of you!
Checked-bag weight limits aren’t about security - they’re mainly for aircraft balance and worker safety. But yes, airlines also use them as a fee structure, which is why it feels like a money grab.
True
You try and lift a suitcase weighing more than 32kg.
And of course you have the same baggage allowance no matter what your own weight is! The system has effectively discriminated against women, subsidising overweight people.
@charlestoast4051Hit the gym sister!
I was hit with a SSSS .. worst international flight ever. Almost decided to return back. I was pissed off. If it wasn’t that my son looked forward to Disney World in Orlando, I would have cancelled and called it a loss.
SSSS is brutal - especially on international trips. It’s usually random or data-driven, not personal. Totally understand why that would sour the whole experience.
This was much fear mongering about "The System" and lots of things to worry about in order to reduce the "risk" of having to spend 20 seconds extra in the security check.
The goal is really just to help travelers avoid surprises at security.
Hmm, I useally wear about 3 days of clothes to save room :/
Layering champion 🏆 Just don’t turn into a walking closet by boarding time 😄
I remember also a kind of professional attitude where they poke you being rude to see how you react, and then once you "pass the test" they can be very friendly and start smiling at you and all. I don't understand what they are looking for, but without being disrespectful I think you need to stand your ground, because if you appear too passive I fear they assume you are hiding something. And about not randomly selecting people, I don't have the slightest doubt about that, I even confronted them about it in Germany, and you wouldn't believe their answer... they tried to be polite by saying to me that "I don't look like I come from that place"... no comment.
Security experiences can vary a lot depending on the airport and country.
For all they complain about TSA, at least I got the impression they are following clear guidelines, they even bothered to show me the screw driver I had was over the allowed size. I certainly do not care for "improvisers" like the ones I had to deal with in France, particularly since I told them I would recheck my bags, waited 5 minutes and enter through another check, and went through without being bothered, which clearly proves that agent had in mind to just bother people.
Good tips.
One that I use: not packing bags right up to the airline's weight allowance/limit.
E.g., on my international flights to Asia, the airline's baggage allowance is 50 lbs per checked bag, with a max of two bags. Using my portable scale at home, I pack up to 47 lbs for each bag, that gives me a 3 lb margin of error for each bag.
Tough to give up 6 pounds of packing space, but my nightmare is being told by the ticket agent that I have to (on the spot) shed pounds of weight or pay $100 *per bag* penalty for each bag that's over the limit.
That’s a pro-level strategy 👏 that 2-3 lb buffer saves people from those painful last-minute fees. Ever had to repack at the counter before?
Is it the reasons while i was flying to kuala lumpur from houston, transit thru london, my checked bag took its 'vacations' to frankfurt? Too much for closely monitoring the luggage 😂 in 20 years of flying every year, i have had 3 times similar incidents...
That can happen on complex connections. Bags sometimes get misrouted between hubs.
I don’t fly anymore, it a lot less hassle and stress free.
Plus I save thousands of dollars too.
Totally get that 👍 For many trips, driving is the real travel hack 🚗
Don't forget to mention you get nowhere as well
Doing business required last minute travel plan oftentimes on a short notice hence the last minute ticket purchase, nothing clandestine....
Absolutely. Last-minute travel happens all the time in business - it’s not automatically suspicious.
Why someone worries about this unless something is wrong. I wear whatever I feel okay while traveling.
For most people, wearing what’s comfortable is fine. The advice is more about avoiding clothing that unintentionally slows screening or draws extra attention.
Oh no, I took a smaller bag. 😂
That’s the classic solution 😂 Smaller bag = fewer bin battles.
4:23 that’s why I always lock and zip tie rig my bag 🤣🤣 cause no one can get into it
😂 smart move-zipping your bag is a simple trick that actually helps a lot.
Ive been back and forth from Mexico to Asia a few times in the last ten years. Long sleeve white shirt and a tie , you look like a missionary , you breeze through. Just make sure your carryon has nothing sharp. No nail clippers , no scissors , no pocket knives , no nail files no keychain knife.
I've been endlessly harassed and inconvenienced for my cigar torch lighters , never again, I'll carry a bic and buy a torch lighter when i get there In Manilla they broke my bong and stole my grinder.
The Manila airport is full of corrupt agents that were caught breaking into multiple passengers zippered suitcases and inserting a bullet , then extorting them for smuggling firearms. A little while later you see all the Philippinos wrapping their suitcases in Saran Wrap , and I mean everyone . Inspired me to buy all clamshell no zipper luggage. Airtags are a must , just a matter of time before they lose your luggage. And take your pasport out of its holder. They hate that. And it won;t fit in the scanner. Never put your cash through the scanner , TSA is full of thieves.
Appreciate you sharing your experience. Rules and enforcement can vary a lot by airport. Smart packing, tracking devices, and separating valuables from checked bags are always safer strategies.
2:57 it’s about being comfortable
Exactly 👍 Comfort travels farther than fashion at airports.
At least they are good at repacking, and I got a polite notice: they checked my bag, nothing was removed.
Yes, that note usually means security inspected the bag and repacked it.
You lucky my suitcase was stolen buy staff working in aero port. Checking the contents inside
I believe the notes and flags in the system can be positive as well. I was on a late night flight where no one was seated in the emergency exit rows. Flight attendant asked me, by name, if I would like to move to a row with better leg room. I am former military, always calm and compliant with security and airline staff, have never been chosen for "random" screening.
You’re absolutely right - not all ‘flags’ are bad. There are positive notes in the system that crew can see, especially for calm, compliant flyers. Most people don’t realize that part.
Question for you: was that upgrade automatic, or did the flight attendant ask you first?
@AvoidFlightBans The flight attendant asked after I was in my assigned seat
Must be nice! Everytime I've ever traveled to the states I've been profiled and have been rescued by either a fellow passenger or a flight attendant that happened to be passing by at the time. I go the extra mile to be proactive when I travel because I have medical issues that don't prevent me from traveling, but require me to travel dressed in loose and warm fitting clothing as well as with medication and at times oxygen. Therefore I make sure that I get clearance from the airlines medical expert/rep with regards to my ability to travel and the medications I'm required to travel with. The information is then put on the system, and I also walk with 2 doctors notes and my medication in their original containers. Each time I've traveled to the US, I've been denied because of security's discretion, until a staff member who just so happens to inquire about what's happening, or another passenger decides to get involved and question security personnel, which is when they suddenly change their mind. The unfortunate thing is that in every case that it happened, rather than management apologize, they try to explain why it was necessary for the security to do what they did, and then say it was a simple misunderstanding. I call BS and honestly, I'm happy not traveling to the US, because it's only ever with them, that these issues arise.
And most importantly the ones who really need to be in focus of the airport security know all these tricks and much more too well
True - the real risks don’t look like regular travelers 👀
Calm behavior matters. Yeah, except when you've got ten minutes to make your connection in the next terminal. YOU AIN'T GOING TO BE CALM.
Fair point 😅 Tight connections test anyone’s calm. That’s why I always recommend minimum 90-minute layovers when possible - saves a lot of stress.
Really I wore really tight shorts without pockets and a nice fitted short sleeve shirt with flip flops. They pulled me out and patted me down. Ps I’m 65+ and white. Flying with my family. That has never happened before.
That’s rough-especially when it’s never happened before. Age, clothing, and randomness can all trigger extra screening. It’s usually not personal, just the system being… the system.
The airport can detect EVERYTHING--except if you're in a hurry. 🙄
Funny how that works 😅 The calmer you are, the smoother everything moves.
been in security I avoid 511, baggy clothes and stuff in every pocket. Simple slide on shoes. Minimal carry on with 1 clothing change to tide me over lost baggage. With bag fees I often wonder if shipping is cheaper than thirty dollars for luggage each way, and maybe just buy and discard at destination. Remember, pack little and souvenirs for everyone overload the return.😢
Great strategy. Simple clothing and lighter packing definitely makes security much smoother.
I always layer up from pants to jackets with pockets for stuff. I put the jacket in the tray and make sure I don't have anything metal in the remaining clothes. Put everything valuable in the carry on including money which is securely zipped. No problem.
That’s a pro move right there 👍 Zippers + pockets = zero stress at security.
Worked at tsa 6 years. Its systemized and chaotic. No set patterns yet, govt. Bs. Do you think you've figured it out cause, i never did.. just glad when it was over.
Appreciate the insider perspective. It really can feel structured and unpredictable at the same time - that’s exactly why understanding the basics helps travelers stay steady.
This might count for the US. Normally only flying with a back pack on 3+ weeks holidays. Often flying in from one airport and out another. Done so for 30 years. Never had any problems
Exactly 👍 Most experienced travelers never have issues - this is more about avoiding rare but annoying delays.
