As an amateur recently able to purchase an R5 due to used prices coming to a reasonable level I appreciate this video. I enjoy your almost calm, matter of fact way of presenting, too. Thanks for the video!
Hi Roy, thought I would just share something I do with my R5 & my new R5II. When I am shooting anything other than a person, I leave my shutter button to spot focus with the small square in servo so effectively this is focus and recompose but with tracking….nothing different here, but then my AF on button (back button) is set to eye autofocus which overrides the shutter. This is the same for my Star button which I have set to one shot and the small square. This allows me to press and hold either of these back buttons to give me two simple options. As a wedding photographer this is perfect to accurately grabbing very specific focus of a person in a crowded frame or the ring exchange when I am looking to focus just on the ring itself at f1.2 in a dark church. I also use the crop function to do this as I shoot all primes and set my last button to the right of the star button to the crop feature. There are two other things I do, the Depth of field button is set to zoomed review, ie where the focus was set to check focus through the viewfinder rather than chimping the rear screen! The button is so easy to find and a second press shows the whole image. Last thing is I just turn my trigger off to set my ambient when using flash, then on again to add flash this works perfect but I also change my flash power in camera rather than on the speed light/trigger itself. I have this option set to the SET button. So a quick press allows me to use the shutter speed dial to add or take away flash power without taking the camera down. I have been doing this now for a few shoots and this is a great feature. Hope that was useful. 😊
@@StuartJamesMedia thanks for all this Stuart! Very interesting to hear your view and way of doing things.. I like the idea of the zoomed preview . Super handy for those paranoid “did I get it” moments. All the best. RR
I have found your channel to be incredibly helpful in setting up my Canon DSLRs. You mentioned that you shot this video with an R8. I just purchased one and I am struggling to find an intuitive setup. Please consider making either a set up or tips and tricks video for the R8. Keep up the great work.
Thanks Tom. Love hate relationship with the R8 so far but I do have a bunch of stuff to discuss in a video about it so watch this space but chock a block with assignments at the moments so very time poor
Thanks, Roy. Regarding the cropped-sensor function in the R5, to allay any worries people may have about image quality: I needed a 300/2.8 and was inspired to buy the R50 body and an EF 70-200 f/2.8 L IS II. I was stunned by the image quality even at 320mm equiv. and f/2.8. YT won't let me link to a sample, but wow! The R50 is a worthy upgrade to the M50 which was a very decent APS-C in its own right.
Yes, I was very surprised by how good the photos looked, sometimes better, to my taste, than even the R6 with the 70-200/II. I can only speculate: was it the small sensor that made faces look more interestingly contoured? Experiments will continue with a portrait session next week.
Great tip for me for changing the frame format - Like you, there are times when I want to go to 1:1.6 or 1:1.3 crop mode and I have assigned that function to the aperture preview button now. Thank you!
Ahh, so this video is of particular interest Roy! The R5 is a camera I still find myself 'tweaking' settings, even after 2 years of use. I've just set up 'your' button to change crop mode, handy..! I still find it, at times, one of the most frustrating cameras I've ever used, but I think this is a Canon/Nikon, Apple/Windows type of thing, the way the operating design intent is something you chime with, or not. I don't. The lens mount design is, as you say, something extremely frustrating in some circumstances...hey pro's work in the dark sometimes Canon! I'll be ordering those luminous dots (spend your 1p Amazon referral wisely...). On the cost saving plus side, I see absolutely no reason to upgrade to the R5 mkii, my R5s will be used until they fall apart. Keep up the good work, on RUclips and behind the camera, I know the 'too busy' feeling...
Great to see you're back with another video. You must've been busy with photography assignments, as of late. It's good to be busy. I can offer a bit of advice when it comes to not being able to see how to align the caps with the lenses. What I've done is taken a silver Sharpie and made a line on each rear lens cap that aligns with the metal electrical contacts on the back of the lens. Even in a dark bag, at a dark venue, you can still see those metal contacts. I just line my Sharpie line up with those metal contacts and it twists right on. I also have a silver Sharpie line on all of my body caps to align with the camera. As for mounting the lens to the camera body, I find the word Canon on the top of the lens and align that with the shutter release button on the camera and it twists right on. I do this all in dark venues and I find it works really well. I hope it helps someone. I'm 50 with not great eyesight, btw.
Haha, great tips! Mine from my brief time with the R5, 7:01 video in stills mode if you program C3 to your desired video settings, you can press the record in stills and it will use the C3 video settings
cheers! I have tried many times to find a way to love the C options. I find it works well once im in video mode because I often change frame rates ect depending on what im doing but I will take on board the C3 thing to flip into video when in stills! very handy. would have loved a big switch like on the other cameras! Cheers! RR
Good evening Roy and welcome back. Seems a while ago since you made a video. I enjoy the videos you put out as you are what you are and say it how it is from your perspective which is a refreshing change. I did enjoy the video even if some of these tips are specific to you / hard pressed users (ie when shaving seconds off things is the difference between a cracking photo or a run-of-the-mill or even missing out on that particular shot altogether). It is nice to have the workflow / ergonomics / reasoning behind your button allocations. Some of this isn't overly applicable to me as I am just a hobbist and if I miss a shot then I just don't have it vs someone like yourself satisfying a clients requirements both in limited resourcing and time with the items being very short and limited. I didn't think you waffled on as you are explaining / justifying your choices and yes the young eagle eyed and menu zapping younger people may do it quicker but then you can have a bit of a giggle in a few years when they are swapping specs for near and far turning screen brightness's up to see the detail !! Again refreshing style and content and thanks.
@@zosozoso2 cheers. I got the R8 specifically as a second body and back up camera to use with the R5. It’s been a love hate relationship so far. It’s OK. Great sensor. Annoying body. @@RoyRiley Great to hear! @@RoyRiley Indeed, I think I will upgrade the R6 to R6II next year. Different battery, one cardslot, no IBIS, and different controls & layout puts me off... still it seems that R8 gets alot of good credit here on youtube ;-)
Ah yes, program the D of F button for crop mode. Thank you Roy, as I use crop mode a bunch as I mainly shoot landscape with a 16-35 or 17-40mm, especially useful for video. I've been using the menu and I've hated it. Stills I just crop with software as 45mp keeps plenty of detail.
