    Top tip for us frequent travelers is taking a pillow case. Makes the world of difference when changing accommodations regularly to have a familiar feeling against your face when sleeping. And takes up no room in your packing to boot.

      I really debating this one before leaving this time but didn't get around to adding one to the bag. I 100% agree that laying your head down on a comfortable and familiar pillowcase is a fantastic idea. It may be something I add along our SE Asia travels ☺️. Thanks for watching!

    We did 3 months in Europe with carry-on and backpack only. Choice of clothing vital. Most of our stuff was wash and dry. Wash it in sink, hang and dry by next morning. We did however try and book places with a washer every 3 weeks or so. It worked out better than we expected. Packing cubes helped me stay organized too.

    Something that we always take is a strong nylon cord, about 20 feet long to use primarily as a clothesline. With that length you can find good places inside or out to tie it up. It scrunches up smaller than a fist, takes up minimal space.

      I always carry electrical tape (in a little ziploc so the glue doesn't seep everywhere) -- it's a safe way to tape over a plug when the socket is loose and doesn't want to hold. I think I started doing that back in the 90s when I traveled for business, along with always carrying a surge protector since hotels at the time never had enough outlets. Oh, and a 3-to-2 prong converter, though that's probably outdated by now. lol

    I enjoy your channel. Lots of good content. We travel for about 4-6 months of the year and have been doing so for over 10 years. After much trial and error we now use a 2-bag system where the carry-on is 55x40x20 cm and weighs 8 kg or less. The personal item (under the seat backpack) is less than 40x30x20 cm and weighs under 4 kg. We use these as guidelines because a) they meet dimension/weight guidelines for most airlines worldwide although there are many airlines especially in Asia that use a 7kg limit. Some airlines are now even introducing a combo weight i.e. the carry-on and personal item bag (under the seat bag) cannot exceed a certain weight. (I have seen 12 kg from a couple of major airlines). And yes we have had our luggage tested in those dimension boxes and have had the carry-on weighed multiple times. In order to meet the 8 kg limit for our carry-on the bag should be super light (we use a bag that is now over 10 years old that weighs 1.6 kg). There is not a lot of sense in using a bag that is heavy when empty if you are serious about complying with airline guidelines. Some get away with non-compliance on dimensions and weight for most of the time - maybe never been checked at all- but I question this strategy. My guess is a lot of airlines especially in the budget category -think Ryanair, EasyJet, Norwegian- make a lot of their revenue from luggage fees and I anticipate that more and more will be checking dimensions and weight. Ryanair charges now for a carry-on but not a personal item. If your luggage exceeds the Ryanair carry-on dimensions you are forced to check it and a much higher rate than the carry-on fee. And yes I saw them checking recently when I flew from Gatwick to Malaga. This likely happens more frequently when the flight is booked solid and they know overhead bins will be packed. [[The aforementioned comments do not apply (at the moment) to US carriers as most don't impose weight limits for carry-on or ignore them and are also casual about dimensions]] Is it a challenge to only carry 12 kg? It was at first but we have become very efficient and happy traveling light. We resigned ourselves to doing laundry more often -and often in the sink. Thanks again for the content you produce. Happy trails!

    I ggot an Away carry on bigger bag. I love it, but when I took it to Sicily, I couldn’t lift it in the overhead bin. A kind gentleman helped me. This time we are flying to Bangkok to get on a cruise ship and ending in Japan. Remembering my last experience, I did a lot of research and ended up with a Travelpro Maxlite 5 carry on that weighs only 5.4 lbs. It is smaller than the Away. I packed it today with 4days of clothes plus 2 pairs of shoes and it feels good, and I am able to lift it up over my head. I will also take a backpack to go under the seat. Because I’m 77 and the cruise is 18 days long plus 2 nights long in a hotel I am checking my Away medium bag. If this were not a cruise, I could take much less. I could get away with just one dinner outfit and the rest be very casual and comfortable. We fly out Monday, May 29

    I have a soft backpack style bag from Rick Steve's Europe Thru the Back Door shop I have used for the last 15 years. It has a expansion zipper that takes it out of the carry on size and compression straps to make it so nothing is loose inside. I have had a few gate agents question it, but it always fits in the overhead bin. I have a small roller bag for the ultra low carriers like Spirit and Frontier which fits under the seat that I use for short trips, but mostly I use the larger soft bag and then I have sling bag for under seat with my laptop and things and is also a day pack. Going through the airport I wear the sling back on a front side and the backpack on the back.
    I also like the REI shirts and I still have some shorts with zip on legs for if I have to have long pants. I have Teva waterproof sandals, but now I probably wear my Olukai mesh sneakers, aka slippa's 90% of the time. I don't think they are technically waterproof, but they dry quickly and I don't need socks.
    I heard a person advocate taking used clothes on trips and donating, or binning them so they don't go on the flight home, but I don't know if that works for continuous travel. I do like light weight things that dry quickly, so you can get by with three sets of clothing if you wash one set every day or two.

    • @BrianandCarrie

    Very helpful video. With the latest news coverage during the holidays of numerous airlines with checked bags piled up in various airports around the world, it reinforces the idea to ONLY travel with a carry on bag. Rick Steves would absolutely agree. I never check a bag. Less is more. The fact that you are travelling seven months with such luggage is a PSA for one and all. Incidentally, Brian, I commend any man (and respect) who will look over what his wife/female partner packs and brings! Very dangerous territory!! Very interesting that you find it so easy to pack.
    The only reservation I would have is you don’t seem to cover what I call casual smart clothes in packing. A nice sports jacket with trousers more formal shirts ties dress shoes when going out to a nice restaurant or hotel bars clubs etc. maybe a thicker coat if you’re travelling in mountains where it will be cold. Guess it comes down to where you going and time of year.
    Thanks again for insight into your packing solutions. All best wishes.

    Another reason to avoid checked luggage, I was recently in an airport that shut down because of an ice storm and all the people who had checked luggage were told they weren't getting it back that day. Even though that hadn't gone anywhere the airport was going to ship the checked luggage to their home, or destination. I don't know why people put important items in checked luggage, but I heard stories about house and car keys and vital medicines, or expensive electronics being put in them. I think people want the convenience of carrying nothing in the airport, but don't think about what happens if that checked bag ends up in a warehouse in Alabama to be sold off with all the other lost items.

    • @BrianandCarrie
      @BrianandCarrie Год назад +2

      I think the news everyone saw recently about lost luggage may help them make the decision to switch to carry-on only if they are able! Even with the carry-on bags we carry, we know there is always the possibility some airlines when overbooked could make us check a bag at the gate. Because of this, we are very selective that anything of value that we know we don't want to risk losing in our under-seat bag that we know stays with us. Thanks for watching! Cheers 🍻

      I've read about people who will wear three shirts to avoid needing a larger bag and I have tried a jacket with many pockets, but I didn't love it.
      I forgot to mention a new little bag I got has security wires to prevent a thief from cutting the strap and running away. I had heard about women's travel purses having them, but nothing for a men's bag. I haven't traveled with it yet, but it potentially would carry a phone and wallet a kindle and a snack bar. It potentially gets things out of my pockets, but hopefully doesn't make it easy for someone to run off with my stuff.

    Question for Carrie -- I have the same Venus travel razor (love the case!) and wondered if you've been able to find replacement heads on the road, or whether you just start with this one and buy other disposables as you go? Excited to see how your pared-down wardrobes go on this trip, and hope it means easier travel days for you both! Great video, and nice to know that the larger size works as I've not bought mine yet. Happy 2023 full of adventures to us all! 🙂 (PS I have two logins and just realized this one wasn't subscribed. Done! lol)

    great list, we just lived in South Korea and Australia and loved it, and will remember your tips, as we also have little room as we have to take computers and a lot of camera equipment which leaves us little room for anything else, lol. We do have two things that really help, one is a bag compacter that shrinks the size of our clothes by squeezing all of the air out of them and making them much smaller in size but adds to your weight if you are not too careful. The other is a Scott vest that has a ton of pockets that you can pack if you are overweight and have to carry items with you. Just started following you and hope we can connect one day. We are currently in South America, and will be heading back to Europe in a few months, and then back to Asia. Keep making videos my friends.

If you are staying in Asia about 5 months and have some some flexibility, you might want to add Japan to your list. While it's not exactly in the SE Asia, and not as inexpensive as other countries, the exchange rate is very good right now, so you can take advantage of it. I just booked my next Euro/Asia vacation, and I was surprised to see how reasonable the hotels are compared to US or western Europe. The away bag is an inch and a quarter taller and half an inch thicker than Air Canada's requirement. And at 7.4 lbs, uses up a fair bit of the weight restriction where imposed.
    We travel with IT ( very light) and Swiss Gear carry on. We are in Mexico for three months with just that.

    • @BrianandCarrie
      @BrianandCarrie Год назад +3

      It is interesting that the size and weight restrictions that the airline's list are quite different than what people tend to carry. We were worried originally when we took off with our bigger carry on's but quickly realized by looking around that most people's carry-ons were much taller and thicker than ours. Fortunately, we have never had an issue with having our luggage measured or weighed in our last 7 months out, and that included a flight on Air Canada. Even knowing there will come a time we will need to check luggage, in the long run, the times we don't will save us so much money. Thanks for watching! Cheers

    We're also full-time travelers headed to Southeast Asia for several months. In hindsight, how well did your luggage work out for you, especially traveling in more remote areas (we've got Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, South Korea and Japan on our itinerary)? We currently only travel with a backpack and carry-on, but we are thinking we need to shift to backpacks only for this portion of travel. But even the backpack requirements we are seeing require a limitation of 7kg (and I'm not sure how well we can do that for the next six months). If we do backpacks only, we'll need to drop them off in the UA and have someone to ship our expensive luggage to our first destination in Europe when we conclude our SE Asia travels. Were you able to travel by bus and planes with all your luggage?

    • @BrianandCarrie
      @BrianandCarrie Год назад

      Our carry-on luggage worked great in SE Asia. There are pros and cons to backpacks and the roller bags that we choose to carry now. We have done both but prefer not having the weight on our backs. We flew 5 times through the region and were only weighed one time and we were well over the 7kg. We used Air Asia and Bangkok Air. Bangkok Air doesn't give you a choice, you check your back either way. In the worst-case scenario, you check your bag and pay the fee, which we have only had to do one time in the last two years of flying mostly budget airlines. That may be less expensive than shipping your luggage to Europe. Thank you for watching, enjoy SE Asia, and safe travels!

    Hey guys! Welcome to SEA!
    I think you’re going to realize that you don’t need a hair straightener. The humidity in SEA is insane and you’re probably going to be tying your hair most of the time. 😅
    Also, it would be interesting to know in a few months if you like traveling with a suitcase in SEA. Unless you’re always taking taxis (Grab), the sidewalks aren’t exactly rolling suitcase-friendly and that’s when there are some. 🤷🏻‍♀️
    Men do need to cover their knees and shoulders when entering temples. So, Brian, you might need a sarong! 😉 Just kidding, most temples do have pants to lend.
    Lastly, my husband and I have been traveling full-time for 5 years. I have a 30L backpack and carry twice as much (or more) clothing (for various temperatures except Winter) than Carrie. 😬
    Anyways, we’re in Kuala Lumpur until January 31st and then we don’t know where we’re heading but we’re probably staying in SEA. You can follow our travels on my FB page Life Untraveled. You never know, maybe our paths will cross! 🤗

    RICK STEVES of RICK STEVE'S EUROPE taught us a lot 30 years ago and showed us how he packs to spend 3 months overseas.

    He typically only took ONE carry-on like you guys
    He was always saying that if you needed anything more, people all around the world all live the same way and use the same things in daily life, which makes perfect sense.
    So, if you find you need some drugs, clothes, shoes, you CAN buy them where you are going !
    I personally try to use soft checked bag luggage because it can be squeezed to fit anywhere plus the LESS the carry-on weighs, the MORE I can put in it.

    Any issues with your weight of carry-on? From a recent trip, while the North American carriers don’t limit weight, the Asian carriers do. So had to transfer items from the carry-on to the suitcases we were checking.

    Enjoyed your video and was ready to order the Away Carryon or the Away Bigger Carryon. They look much bigger on your video than in real life, so I'm puzzled. Maybe it's because they were on a counter instead of on the floor.

      Hi, Keith, maybe they do look bigger in the picture? Although, If they were any bigger, they wouldn't be carry-on. 🙂Traveling full time we have found that packing less is much easier to move from place to place and we have plenty of what we need. Thank you for watching!

      That's why I have been using a Rick Steve's backpack for the last 15 years. Rough surfaces and stairs aren't roller bag friendly. Although I am always envious of the roller bags when I am in the airport.

    How do you go with bag weight for carry on - we find that its not just size its carry on weight limits eg: we are flying Finnair and their carry on weight limit is 8kg total. Also flying Singapore Airlines and their carry on is 7kg plus a personal item such as a tote bag no bigger than 40x30x10cm. I can do it but it really narrows things down for a few months in Europe over multiple countries and weather conditions. It's a challenge that's for sure.

    • @BrianandCarrie
      @BrianandCarrie 9 месяцев назад

      The weight is a huge challenge. We luckily have only been weighed at the gate in all of our travels one time. Most the times we find this isn't a issue, but there is always that risk.

    • @BrianandCarrie
      @BrianandCarrie Год назад

      We used to carry one but found that it didn't work very well. Lighting and sound are very important and sometimes the most difficult. In our inside videos, we make sure that we are near a window on a bright day. 😃 We also have pillows and blankets strung out all around us that you can't see on camera.

    • @BrianandCarrie
      @BrianandCarrie Год назад +1

      Hi Connie! We do carry two fire sticks with us simply because we've had one stop working (granted it was quite old). For how small they are and being it's not something we could easily replace on the road, it's just worth it to carry a back up.

    Its been the one thing I have noticed when travelling the last several months, getting on planes and more and more people are bringing those 'away' type bags (big squared carryon) , forgive me but as a another passenger its getting really annoying as those things take up huge amount of space in the overhead and more often now I cant even get my small backpack in there. I actually hope the airlines crackdown on those type of bags because its not fair on everybody .

    I've been trying to figure out how to visit South East Asia budget wise and we are looking at flights but they're thousands of dollars per person. Did you guys manage to avoid that?

    • @BrianandCarrie
      @BrianandCarrie Год назад +1

      There is a lot that goes into searching for flights and so many things that will affect the price. From the US we were able to get a round-trip ticket for just over $1000. But we fly economy and also check the dates for the best day to leave and return. I would suggest using Google flights to search for the best areas to fly into (a hub is always better) and also the best days to fly. Good luck with finding a great deal! Cheers 🍻

    Couple of tips . You might want to consider Deet mosquito spray , band aids , neosporin ,Tylenol , vit c etc . Most of SE Asia is on the conservative side so Flowy cotton pants are more preferable than shorts . Same with tank tops . Also keeps mosquito bites our with more coverage. I would also consider some basic vaccinations ( hepatitis , typhoid ) ..Good luck
