    I think that only Volt owners can appreciate the convenience that the regen paddles provide. Going down hill or slowing down I shift the Volt into L to maximize regen. With the ELR you get the convenience of of just squeezing the paddle. Nice touch.

    As a huge fan of the Volt and really wanting the cost to drop to get one, I think Cadillac nailed this and I would pay a premium for this. I really like the hybrid plugin idea for a car.

    I did. I live 12 miles from the Tesla plant in Fremont. I was hot for the S until I started reading up on these cars. I figured I may as well know what I am getting into. Turns out, you should plug these cars in ALWAYS. You never let the charge deplete unless you have to. Even going to the corner store, you plug in when you get back. That makes the extra range pointless if you drive less than 40 miles per day. $105k for a tesla that MotorTrend got only 235 miles with. I bought a Volt.

    Love the styling. I would love this as my daily commute car. The 40 mile electric range is plenty considering that most people commute less than 25 miles per day. I know for me it would be months before that gas engine ever needed to fire up. Also the electric puts out 290 ft lbs of torque which is more than some of the V8's from just a couple of years ago. I think this is going to do very well for Cadillac.

    Finally a hybrid worth owning. However, that's only because this beauty of a car doesn't come with anything else for powertrain options. I think this is Cadillac's best looking car, and I would kill for a CTS-V with this body.

    Excellent review. You pulled allot of information out of GM. Good work. The ElR is beautiful. Cadillac is taking a big risk. The consumer is taking less of a risk than going with Tesler or Fisker. I dont see the average Joe buying this car. I see it being added to the garage of folks that have several cars. Graduation Gifts for well off youth. I hope that will generate enough sales for Cadillac to be successful with the ELR. It is a beautiful effort.

    I hope I'm looking at the new Coupe styling for the ATS! That coupe would be nearly irresistible. A two-seater ATS with this styling would be over the Moon (with the V6 of course, and maybe hybrid format with the V6).
    Does the ELR have good cold-weather performance, like being left outside in near zero temperatures?

  • @YaBoiScrumpo
    @YaBoiScrumpo 12 лет назад

    Okay, you have a good point as far as coupes having 4 seats and car companies knowing about it. In the end, Caddy just needs to make an electric car that is a sedan and then make the ELR a rear wheel drive coupe, and then they may actually start getting somewhere. I presume they were thinking that they would leave the Volt for the people who wanted more than 2 doors, though I find that mindset a little stupid myself. When I look back on it, you're right, the fact that it is FWD doesn't help.

    what I like better than the other electric cars is you won't be stuck when the battery power runs out. you have the gasoline engine that starts up and acts as a generator and you can keep driving until you can charge the batteries up again.

    So the drivetrain is the same as the Volt? I was expecting more battery capacity and more power. When is the second gen Voltec drivetrain coming out if not in the high end Cadillac? Looks great, but I was expecting more.

    In answer to Car and Driver: YES! the 2014 ELR looks good enough that I would own one. Usually I need to drive something before I buy it but this car brings new excitement (and a return to domestic brands for me) that I am considering putting money down on a car that isn't even built yet. How's that for enthusiasm? :-D

  • @AlternativeUses
    @AlternativeUses 12 лет назад

    i should have clarified, i didn't mean 250 HP per se, i meant the acceleration one would expect from a 250 HP car, something like 0-60 in around 7 seconds (or less). if anything, i prefer an engine with a lot of torque because i do mainly city driving. i have a small 2.0T which makes 258lb-ft at around 1500rpm and would rather have that over a high revving I-4 that makes peak torque around 6000 rpm. the tesla is a good example of what electric cars are capable of in terms of torque production.

  • @shizzy_Snorlax
    @shizzy_Snorlax 12 лет назад

    Wow. They nailed this from concept to production design wise. Very sexy. I was not hot paying $45k for a Volt but I would pay that much for this (looks like it will be well north of that though). This is the perfect car for the executive who needs a great ride to and from the workplace, or that high society couple looking to go green and just look damn good doing it. I'm putting this car on my list of dream rides!

    This is a good looking car. Say what you want about Cadillac, they have a distinctive look. You will not mistake them for any other manufacturer's line up. I was getting gas the other day when a lady pulled up in a Hyundai Genesis. There were two guys at the pump next to me and one belts out, "That's a good looking BMW!" I didn't even bother to correct them. No way would they have made that mistake with a Cadillac. I think this car will do well.

    Motor Trend named the Tesla S Car Of The Year. They did a real world drive. They barely eaked 236 miles out of the top of the line S. They had to shut down some systems to achieve that. That model cost $105,000. The projected price of the ELR is $60,000. Per Tesla, the cheapest S model is $52,000. Believe me, the options in the cheap S and the expensive S are day and night. The ELR will be fully equiped. And ... you won't need to own a second car.

    imo the interior looks great and the exterior pretty good. but I wonder who the market for this car is? I guess modern people value tech as much as hp. The next gen with a larger battery and at least 250 hp would be my minimum at this price point. Oh yeah, an independent suspension as well. Nevertheless, looks like another good product from gm

    The regenerative braking via shift paddles was stolen 100% from the Golf E and A3 E-tron. Nice engineering Cadillac lol I mean copying. "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" Regardless of the blatant stealing of technology, the ELR looks and feels great. And as always C&D delivers great informative videos. Keep it up.

    I meant to say chevrolet which came up with the concept in January 2007 before Toyota.Maybe Toyota got an approval first but Gm built the first PHEV. In addition, Bmw hired one of the major engineer on the Volt to build the i8. You can't except the fact that Cadillac has more technology and better styling than a BMW. However, you can say that BMW has a better name.

    The biggest issue is that for $70K, you're still getting a vehicle that isn't very much different than a Chevy Volt with leather seats as it would have been nice if the headlights came off the ATS or a more robust electric motor for better performance.

    I like the Volt, and it makes sense. In another universe where Tesla doesn't exist, this Cadillac might make sense too, but I don't see why you would pay $60-77k for this when you could get a 40 or 60kwh Model S instead, unless you just like the Cadillac design style that much.

    The range is lower than what Tesla advertises. There are a few real world tests out there. Look up "World Exclusive! 2012 Tesla Model S Test and Range Verification". There is no such thing as a Cadillac cash cow. I owned two Cadillac's. The Volt needs to be toned down so more people can afford it. I ordered the basic Volt because I didn't need the back-up camera and GPS. But believe me, I got more than I wanted. The top of the line Volt is plush & beyond. Go drive one. You'll be amazed

    has anyone ever told you that writing in all caps does not improve your arguement/statement? and i will never drive a volt. about the fuel; i was talking about driving it on the 1.4 ltr engine by itself. and some areas cost more than others. the only way i will drive an electric vehicle is of two ways. 1) find a way to up the recharge rate (4-12 hours is too damn long) and 2) increase the range of the battery (35 miles on a single charge is too low vs the 300 miles for gasoline for this car)

    Is the Type S's range debatable - sure! Will the ELR be more loaded than the base Type S. Probably...but not by much I'd think.
    I think the ELR is GM's Voltec Cash cow. Take the Volt, make it look incredible, give it the bells and whistles and then sell it at near double the price. This higher perceived value translates to incredible margins for GM. Everybody's a winner if you're okay paying for that. I'm not. I'd bite at 55k and not a dime more.
