I’ve read a lot of comments here on facepulling, over theatrical presentation, etc. in my opinion Aldous can paint her arse blue and walk like a chicken as long as she keeps on producing such beautiful work.
Came home from work one night, stuck on the tv and Jools was introducing this. Just when you think no one can really do anything new in music, something unique springs out of nowhere while you're eating a chicken jalfrezi microwave meal.... magic.
I like the fact she doesn't give a shit what she looks like or morons think of her, I'm sick of self conscious music posing, this has an air of emotional authenticity.
Reb Fromme. I think she does care what people think of her...a lot, why else would she put on such a performance? It's clearly not a natural way to present oneself. I found the whole thing rather cringe inducing, but that's fine, her prerogative as an artist as far as I'm concerned. I think many people will see her performance and be immediately turned off by it, I like that she isn't just going in for gathering as many fans as possible, but it brings some fairly uncharitable thoughts to my mind, perhaps holding a mirror up to parts of my personality....all said and done, I'm not a fan, she's got talent but it all seems overly pretentious to me,
Earth From Observer maybe it's part of the story she's telling. I don't know, I like it that a singer, especially female, can present a song through something that is not... aesthetically beautiful but rather in some other way, emotional or raw. She reminds me a bit Jarboe, from Swans. But, to each to their own....I can understand very well that it might not appeal to everyone. I think that in this song or at least in this particular presentation of it, she does want to appear insane, or as a woman scorned.
shes from new zealand. this is performed in traditional maori waka style. and he (maori)had to choose tradition ( a maori princess) over the wide horizon of traditionless life. ( her- not being maori)
She opens herself up for the wave of trolls that this will no doubt bring. And she does so seemingly without a care. Vocally stunning here in my opinion.
I truly believe she does what she needs to coax an authentic performance from herself. It is not for theatrical effect and all about the music. I am so glad we finally got another true poet in "popular" music.
To everyone criticising her performance read the lyrics. The song is filled with hurt, anger, disappointment and pride. Her beloved was competitive, egotistical, jealous and ultimately sacrificed their love for his ambition. He had to make a choice and he made the wrong one. Marlon sang Jealous Guy at the Sydney show which kind of says it all.
She always performs like this, it's part of her theatre and artistry. She's also very intense in interviews and answers each question overly carefully! I've never seen anyone do that in an interview.
Late to the party as usual. Just been introduced to Aldous, here on YT. Oh my days, there ARE real singers still. The lost eyes of Anna McGarrigle, the sheer face of early Leo Sayer. The courage of Steve Harley. And all of it totally hers. I think she's rather splendid.
Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, and even Alice Cooper, just a few names of people trying to escape from the "box"....Aldous is breaking out too, so for many its very painful / funny but for me a breath of fresh air.
Yes, a breath of fresh air, she is channeling the best that has gone before her and adding to their legacy in the most delicious way. Haunting, wonderful and pure.
Everything about Aldous Harding is extraordinary! If anyone ever complains there's no good music and nothing original anymore, just point them to Aldous Harding.
It seems to me that the music and emotion is being expressed through her. I think she is a courageous and fearless artist prepared to abandon her self and personality/ego for the sake of the truth of the work which she is immersed in. That is very rare nowadays as most artists would never reveal what they were really feeling when they perform a song as everyone's so paranoid about how they are perceived by the world, lol. She is laying it all out there when she performs her music. Fantastic x peace and love Aldous x
She reminds me of Kate Bush and other artists who are reaching deep inside and bring something out that doesn't suit a conformity culture. This is art. Let it be what it is.
Aldous Harding is performing live during May 2019 in the U.K. I have my ticket booked already, and I never do anything in advance as a rule. Love this Ladies work, all those cleverly crafted songs, and what an amazing voice and range she has. I'm truly looking forward to the release of her New Album in April 19 also. Thanks.
I read through tons of these comments and they are either complimentary or they're complaining about people who have left a comment about how they don't like her face pulling. But I can't actually find anyone complaining about her face pulling.
:-O ..just discovered this beautiful & beguiling artist today, some of these songs are just instantly rendering me catatonic with awe,and this performance on jools..spine tingling..whether it's 'put on' or she's really 'in the zone' i'm not sure, but i'm hooked..
shes from nz. it reminds me of maori waka dance ceremony- in which you express your thoughts and feelings very lively. there are diff dances& rituals.- marriage, funeral.etc this one was created by her for a divorce of a couple. he was maori and maoris still got native kingdoms and native kings& queens. he felt he had to choose the tradition and pass it further with a maori wife and a full maori child. and there she is- the wide horizon- with no limitations in the name of traditions. its very poetic- its full of life: love, hate , anger and warmth. you gotta know the backround.

To all the people pissed off because she isn't behaving in a stereotypically appealing feminine manner maybe you should youtube the new Miley Cyrus song or something?
It's 2020 and I love Aldous but just lately I've noticed that Miley can actually sing too. This surprised me I always thought of her as a an annoying pop princess but she can belt out rock songs as well.

I was so unprepared for this I almost burst into tears. Very occasionally the real deal sneaks into the room. Aldous - welcome.
Congratulations. You're even more pretentious than you ever imagined.
Agree 100%, well said 👏
So refreshing, she uses so many haunting timbres in her voice, and creates such atmosphere with her presence. Fascinating.

I would absolutely love to have a conversation with Aldous Harding , no one is more interesting to me at this moment , very special and real
It is absurd how hard my brain wants to connect with her brain.
Love this song and love the performance. Shes taking huuuge risks here and its paying off. Its a pity some people wont see that
