I literally thought to myself "I wonder if cattle riding is a thing" and this was the search result. Wow. Those are some well trained and bonded cattle.
They are behaving better than most horses do! Great job with these two! You can train cattle just like a horse, they are actually about the same intelligence level in some cases, depending on the individual. Most would say horses are a bit smarter but TBH, this video kind of makes me question that theory, as it is most likely the opinion of HORSE owners who don't know much about cattle. Texas Longhorns are another very intelligent cattle breed and there are videos here of them being ridden too. People see a rodeo and get the wrong idea about bulls and cattle as a species. Bulls are not generally mean and cows are not always gentle. Either gender can be calm, or they can be aggressive and spooky, same as horses. Some of it has to do with genetics, breeding and temperament but MOST of it is how you handle the animal and this goes for all livestock. The bulls in rodeos are often rescued bulls, who were NOT trained to be ridden and who are often too dangerous to be handled by farmers. Other times they are gentle bulls who can be petted by people, they just don't like people on their back. In some cases, the animal was abused and given a second chance as a rodeo animal instead of becoming steak. There is a lot to know about cattle and they can be as interesting as horses IF you take the time to learn about them. Great video and TY for sharing!
Interesting read. I care for a 900 lb/2 yo cow that is extremely tame with me. Loves to play and roughhouse around but is also super safe, balanced and trustworthy. Absolutely tolerant in temperament with me, just an amazing balanced creature. I was wondering whether I'd be too heavy for her to easily take on her back, me being a pretty heavy 200 lbs. There is a 20% rule in horseriding so I'd be about breaking that rule. A source on cow riding says they can carry up to 50% of their bodyweight, which seems to greatly contradict the 20% rule of horseriding, although perhaps 50% refers to carrying loads and not actual riding, I don't know. If I get on her back I don't want to be an uncomfortable or borderline amount of weight for the 900 lb beast, she needs to be able to bare me easy or I won't do it. Would you know? If I was say 150 lbs I'd feel better about it, but 200 lbs seems like a fair bit and she's only 900 lbs. Her breeding is a beef cross. Based on literature, if it was a horse I think the recommendation would be I'm too heavy as I break the 20% rule.

my steers are finally old enough to do the actual breaking to ride which i am starting next week if i dont have time this week. i have done a lot of exposing them to saddles and such as this has been something i have wanted to for a long time, i have broke and trained horses for years. time to try something new. i have 2 Ayrshire steers :)

I don’t understand comments like this. U been around “farm animals” ur whole life and didn’t know u could train a cow??? U obviously grew up with chickens pigs sheep goats etc. they are smart and have brains. Anything with a brain can be taught certain things.

This is such an amazing achievement! I have so many questions. What is the working life expectancy of an ox team? Can you ride both of them or only the one on the right? (IDK which is Simon, which is Oliver.) Are they shod? Do they need to be seen by a farrier? Do they get distressed if they need to be separated for a time (vet care, etc.)? Do they need special fencing because of their size?

Can I also say, thank you, that you keep the steers/ oxen horns (with interesting covers) as it is an important tool and organ of this animal. They are said to be able to regulate body temperature with their horns and it also is important for their self worth and esteem. These are magnificent animals. I used to say I wanted a horse. Then I jokingly said I'd even take a riding cow. Now RUclips has decided to show me that lots of different people have done this. Ah well, I'd still take a riding anything but only if I win the lottery. Because there's no way I could physically care for them. I'd have to hire someone. Although I'd just kind of like a field of retired animals mostly.
I have calls and we have a very close bond I can lie over them like my feet in the ground and my belly on there back I can sit with them and we have a verry verry close bond and I really want to ride her but I'm like a but unsure I'm defo going start halter training this week and iv had them for 5 months but there 9 months only
Gemma Mccorry, like the lady in the video said, gradually get them used to having somebody sitting on them. Sit on them once or twice a week. You could do that in a horse stall if you're worried about the cow moving around too much. Just don't start doing any serious riding until your cow is mature. You could injure it otherwise.

Yea probably! I’m starting to train my Holstein heifer she is only 4-5 months so she’s still learning. She’s halter broken (mostly still working on it but she’s so good!) and I’m starting to press and lean in her back.

I am in the process of starting up a ranch and am going to be looking to train one of my bulls for riding, but while I have extensive animal training experience, that experience has been with more predatory species than hooved species -- and never riding type experience. By riding I mean the style you demonstrate in this video -- cattle-back riding, not the wild bucking kind most people would think of hearing 'bull riding'.

But based on my extensive study, based on Colorado State University's Animal Science plus other texts (such as Temple Grandin's books on cattle behavior), there are substantive differences that will take guided experience to learn. This and other aspects are why the plan includes a generous salary for a hand, as they will need to effectively be able to run the place in order to recognize I am about to err and correct me.

Your are so right! People misunderstand cows. I love my horses, and my cows. In fact a lot of times the cows are much simpler.
It should be noted that this bulls is sterilizated. Therefore they is calm.

Thomas Farmer horns aren't organs.
Cattle don't have self esteem issues. That's a human emotion.
Cows have a relatively wide range of emotions. I would say pride was for some, especially bulls.
