Overall, I thank God for the ministry of John Piper. God has often blessed me through his teaching and I pray that God will continue to bless many people through his teaching. However, on this topic, I believe Piper is wrong. I believe that the annihilation view of hell is correct. I actually began to shift from believing in the eternal torment view of hell to believing in the annihilation view while reading a quote from John Stott that was in a footnote in a book by Piper where Piper was defending eternal torment. I shared that story in a recent talk at a Rethinking Hell conference. In the question and answer session of that same talk, I also specifically address 2 Thes 1:9-10. The talk is available online on the Rethinking Hell RUclips channel and should be easy to find for anyone who is interested.

I'm thinking it might not be as clear cut... how eternal torment could be temporary... until eternal destruction... just a thought. Imagine though, your last thought (consciousness) knowing it/the punishment will continue forever and then being relieved of that... would that really be relief?
What would be fair in your opinion... living the most hideously evil life on earth and getting away with it scott free.. having known the truth?👀 I dont think so brother🙏

@@jdubruyn , thanks for sharing your thoughts and questions. I have a few replies.
I did not say or imply, nor do I believe, that "eternal torment could be temporary." I do not believe that the Bible teaches eternal torment. "Eternal destruction" does not mean eternal torment. The Greek word translated "destruction" here is olethros and was used in ancient Greek to refer to the complete and permanent annihilation of all parts of a person. So, "eternal destruction" is a destruction that is permanent and lasts forever.
The punishment is death. The Bible teaches that the wages of sin is death. So, it is wrong to imagine that the punishment is something else and then the punishment is ended by death. Nevertheless, this does not mean that the process of dying will be pleasant - it wasn't for Jesus.
If someone is given the death penalty, that is not the same as "getting away with it scott free."

I'm autistic and have been suffering from depression and anxiety for more than 6 years. As a Christian, it's so hard to even be a true follower of Jesus. Even reading the old KJV of the Bible is hard in places I've never read. I do not deny the reality of Hell or the Gospel. But even though I believe that Jesus paid the penalty of the sins of the world, I still believe that I'm going to end up in Hell when I die. There are many sins I commit daily, such as masturbation, sexual impurity, anger, bitterness, slothfulness, fear, doubt, anxiety, worry, and other unintentional sins. I come to God in prayer to free me from these temptations. But all I hear is that I'm a fake Christian and that I'm doing everything all wrong. I know that the devil is telling me these things and persuading me to give up and stray further away from God. More than Hell, I'm afraid of Satan and his demons knowing that they're smarter than all of humanity. They have the power to deceive, lie, steal, kill, and destroy. I know that every day, I'm being tempted and deceived by the devil. It also feels that God doesn't even care what Satan is doing to me. Being autistic is so hard for me. I want an everlasting relationship with Jesus. But I so often see God as a ruthless, tyrannical dictator who eagerly waits for me to commit another sin so He can cast me into Hell forever. I also see Him protecting and comforting Satan and his demons while they steal, kill, and destroy. Whenever I fall asleep at night, I only have gloomy, sad, empty, and hopeless dreams. I don't see anything good about God when he gives Satan permission to cause deception and destruction on us. And then God sits back on His throne with a smirk on His face overlooking our small, detailed areas of hypocrisy, paganism, false Christianity, and being lukewarm.

Will pray for you. Don't let people put labels on you. Psychology is something people nowadays know all too much about, but people are doing worse than ever so who is really being fooled. Eat healthy, exercise and just keep believing in God's divine power over your life no matter what - It has worked for me - you have no idea.
The devil is called the "accuser of the brethren" and he/it will make you feel guilty, believe the Word instead and do your part to improve you life. Take it one day at a time while seeking to make the gospel the backbone of your integrity and I believe and pray you will become whole💙
"But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you." Matthew 6:33
"Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil." Ephesians 6:11
"Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. If you had known Me, you would know My Father as well. From now on you do know Him and have seen Him.”
Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.”
Jesus replied, “Philip, I have been with you all this time, and still you do not know Me? Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me? The words I say to you, I do not speak on My own. Instead, it is the Father dwelling in Me, performing His works. Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me-or at least believe on account of the works themselves.
Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever believes in Me will also do the works that I am doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in My name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask Me for anything in My name, I will do it.
      Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit
If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you forever- the Spirit of truth. The world cannot receive Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you do know Him, for He abides with you and will be in you.
I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. In a little while the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you are in Me, and I am in you. Whoever has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me. The one who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and reveal Myself to him.”
Judas (not Iscariot) asked Him, “Lord, why are You going to reveal Yourself to us and not to the world?”
Jesus replied, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word. My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. Whoever does not love Me does not keep My words. The word that you hear is not My own, but it is from the Father who sent Me.
All this I have spoken to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have told you.
      Peace I Leave with You
Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled; do not be afraid. You heard Me say, ‘I am going away, and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved Me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you before it happens, so that when it does happen, you will believe.
I will not speak with you much longer, for the prince of this world is coming, and he has no claim on Me. But I do exactly what the Father has commanded Me, so that the world may know that I love the Father.
Get up! Let us go on from here."" John 14:6 -31

Sheldon, I understand your inner conflict very well and can relate to much of what you said. I fight to resist the same lies, and I struggle to overcome the same struggles. You are not alone, my friend.
While I agree with Johan that labels may sometimes be harmful, there must be a balance with using labels for mental illness. Avoiding labels might be just as harmful as overusing them. I have suffered for many years from a set of symptoms that make life harder and more painful for me than it is for the majority of people. Those symptoms have been given a few names: Clinical Depression, and ADHD - Inattentive Type: it's the ADHD without the H. These diagnoses help me to make sense of why I feel so awful so much and why life is frequently so difficult. The diagnoses help me to identify the problems I face, so that I may more easily find solutions to those problems.
The name HaSatan in Hebrew means "Accuser". Also, Satan is a liar and the father of lies. Combine his two traits and you get a lying accuser, who makes false accusations. When he lies to us, he gives us false accusations about God, such as "God is cruel, God is evil, God is unjust, God hates you, etc.". He also gives us false accusations about ourselves, such as "You're hopeless. You're a failure. You're headed for Hell. God is disgusted with you, etc." Again, all false accusations.
I sense that somebody told you that only the KJV is the inspired word of God. This is false and leads to bondage. I've heard all the arguments from narrow- minded "King James only" Christians. They are not based on sound reasoning and are not worth our time. Get yourself a N.I.V. or N.L.S. Bible, what is known as a "dynamic equivalence" translation. The books of the Bible were originally written in Hebrew (O.T.), Greek (N.T.) , and possibly Aramaic (N.T.). KJV is a literal translation, just like ESV, NASB, or NKJV. They are all reputable translations.
There are thousands of ancient manuscripts that have been cross-referenced with one another and the variations among them work out to about 0.4 %, or 1 in 250. The vast majority of those variations do not affect the meaning. And for the ones that do, there is enough repetition from multiple sources and enough thematic consistency to discern the original author's intent.
The first teaching Jesus gave was the sermon on the mount. And the first thing He said there was: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.". "Poor in spirit" means a person who realizes that (s)he has no righteousness of her/his own. This person comes before God with empty hands and a contrite heart. Poverty of spirit is the introduction to the Kingdom, because we cannot purchase our own salvation. We are broke. This is what you were talking about when you were describing your struggle against the carnal nature. Romans 7 talks about the process of discovering just how poor in spirit we really are. I mean, we are Bankrupt.
Sheldon, Christ Jesus has given you His righteousness. We have no righteousness of our own, none of us do. God showed His love for you when you were furthest from Him by sending Jesus. He became the lamb of God, killed for us so that the death angel would pass-over us when it sees that His blood has covered our sins. "For God so loves Sheldon, that if Sheldon believes on Him, he shall not perish, but have eternal life."
Put your name into the promises of God.
"If Sheldon confesses with his mouth 'Jesus is Lord, and believes in his heart that God raised Him from the dead, then Sheldon shall be saved.". The price that Jesus paid for you was big enough to cover your sins. God's grace gives us what we don't deserve (salvation), and His mercy doesn't give us what we do deserve (condemnation).

    • @harriedsloth4399

@Charlie Chapman I don't think Sheldon needs to be convinced that God will destroy the wicked for their sins. This is like telling a hypochondriac that he is covered with disease-causing germs.
Sheldon falsely believes that the atonement of Christ on the cross was insufficient for a sinner of his magnitude, thus elevating his sin as being greater than God's mercy. It is God's mercy that must be exalted to its proper place in Sheldon's perspective.
Nor do I think Sheldon needs to hear that God is sifting out the tares. Tares are generally not afraid of sin and judgment, such as Sheldon is. Tares have no concern for pleasing God nor doing His will.
God's word tells us to encourage/support/uphold the fainthearted, and to bear patiently with him whose faith is weak. Sheldon is struggling to see God accurately, therefore, he needs to learn more about the goodness and mercy of God.

Sheldon, brother. In Ephesians 3, Paul is adamant that we must grasp how wide and deep the love of God is for us. Rather than nitpick our sins, remind us that we are sinful people, Paul wants us to grasp that the knowledge of God‘s love for us is the highway for change-lasting change. If people could just realize after they sin, that God is not standing in front of them with crossed arms or clenched fist, but instead his arms are stretched out wide to embrace them, then much of the battle over sin could be won. If we have any doubt about God’s extended arms spread wide in our minds, we need to grasp the image that God sent his Son in love for us to literally stretch his arms as wide as they could go and allow people to nail them there. That should be a constant reminder that God stands before us with his arms open. Truly, if we could grasp this truth, we would struggle far less with our petty sins.

Romans 10 is also refering to Joel 2 (That is sometimes what the bible does, some books refer to other books) - scripture interprets scripture
Joel 2:27 so it is talking about God's chosen people, Israel (the nation the mesiah would came from)
Joel 2:32 They shall be delivered from physical death, because the whole chapter (joel 2) is talking about the second coming of christ/day of the lord Joel 2:30-31
Romans 10:1 - Here it clearly says that it is talking to ISRAEL in the END TIMES
Romans says that if you BELIEVE you have achieved JUSTIFICATION
and if you CALL/ASK/SAY WITH YOUR MOUTH with your mouth you will be SAVED
But justification means to be saved from hell. Why would it say BELIEVE to not go to hell and ASK to not go to hell. Why would it say it twice?
PS: I did both. I believed and called to the lord (but i dont think i had to say the words) (actually at that time i did believe i had to say the words, but i changed my mind, now i dont think a person needs to)
    ruclips.net/video/rfWyWF4Ay6Y/видео.html
    ruclips.net/video/ta-aOFWeAWk/видео.html
I do think that confessing with your mouth is adding works to the salvation. It is like saying "If you really believe you will ask" which sounds almost like the more heretical statement preached by "repentance of sins to be saved preachers" "If you really believe you will have good works"
I don't agree that if you believe that you will necesarily have good works or will necesarily confess with your mouth
I don't want to be rude about this and would like to hear your point of view if you want to explain it. I could just ask the question "What about mute people?" or "what if you cut out their tongues?" but that would mean that God doesnt treat everyone equally concerning salvation from hell and gives some people a way to be saved without confessing (according to you)
Why do you think that Romans 10 is talking to everyone? Literally in the first verse it says "ISRAEL" and many times more in the chapter it says that it is talking to ISRAEL
I think of it like this. If you're not sure that your faith is at least the size of a mustard seed, then you can be sure your faith is bigger than that if you willingly confess, but i never said that if you don't utter the words, that you are not saved. John 12:24
If you read Romans 9, 10 and 11 it is ALL talking about the JEWS and ISRAEL and paul quotes the old testament a lot lemme give you some context
Only chapter 12 starts talking more about the whole world
    1. Paul quotes Joel 2 (i already explained that)
2.Romans 10:14-15 quotes Isaiah 52:7 and if you read surrounding verses in Isaiah 52 you'll see that it is talking about the END TIMES and the messianic kingdom
    3. A big part of the tribulation period is to make the Jews nationally believe in Jesus for their salvation (if they believe they wont go to hell, if they confess they wont die in the tribulation)
    4. Zechariah 13:8 says that a lot of Jews are gonna be killed and not only that. A lot of believers (jews and gentiles) are gonna be killed, because they were unfaithful and the faithful shall remain alive matthew 24:13 (matthew isnt talking about salvation from hell, it is talking just like romans about the salvation from physical death in the end times) otherwise it would mean that if you lost faith, you lost salvation from hell, which it cant mean because OSAS

With all due respect, Dr. Piper has not quite examined closely enough at how Paul is borrowing language from the Old Testament. In 2 Thessalonians 5:8 about Jesus coming from heaven "with His mighty angels in flaming fire, giving vengeance on those who do not know God," comes straight from Isaiah 66:15 and 16 where it states the "Lord will come in fire, and his chariots like the whirlwind, to render his anger in fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire. For by fire will the Lord enter into judgement, and by His sword with all flesh; and those slain by the shall by many." Paul is referencing an image in the Old Testament where in the final judgement, the Lord is slaying His enemies. He is not ruining them. He is enacting vengeance on them with an eternal destruction, not an eternal destroying. The privation of one's life through the means of an eternal destruction is INDEED a punishment. It is not letting the lost get off the hook. The lost will be raised, will be judged, and be destroyed (body and soul) in what Revelation calls the second death. Eternal Conscious Torment is unfortunately engrained in the minds of believers through tradition and powerful people who refuse to even question the doctrine.

I have appreciated much of John Piper’s ministry, but I believe he is wrong on this topic. I found it interesting that he references Sodom and Gomorrah as an example of the meaning of destruction, but doesn’t draw the obvious conclusion that the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah meant their death. He also quotes Paul, who states that the wages of sin is death. It’s baffling why he would ignore the clear teaching of scripture that death is the result of sin. The opposite of eternal life is death not living forever.

I feel that Piper is trying to base his opinion on "depths of words" on a few verses, rather than basing his opinion on many verses on the same topic, which in my opinion gives a more accurate picture. the bible says: the sum of God's word is truth. This means that you must add up all the verses in the Bible that refer to this matter. We must not forget that God says that we humans have not yet received eternal life, and that the final destination of the wicked is eternal death, which is not the same as eternal life in hell.

Why repenting of your sins is a DANGEROUS teaching that doesn’t save anyone.
I was talking to a guy the other day who told me he can’t stop committing the same sins over and over every day, so he repented of them constantly. He said it was exhausting.
When I told him what I’m about to tell you, he said he felt like the world had just been lifted off his shoulders.
I challenged him. I said open up the King James Bible and show me the verse that says repent of your sins TO BE SAVED.
He couldn’t find it, and neither can you. That’s because it isn’t there. The Bible does say “Repent and believe the gospel”, so let’s look at what repent means.
It doesn’t mean to stop sinning. That’s impossible while we’re in these fallen bodies, but we’ll get to that.
Repent is derived from the Greek word metanoia. It means to have a change of mind, as in going from unbelief in Jesus to belief in Jesus. Or changing your mind about how you feel about sinning.
    Meta=change Noia=mind
Scripture is clear it means to change your mind.
    Matthew 21:28
“But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard.”

“He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went.”
He didn’t stop sinning. He changed his mind and went to work in the vineyard.
God repented many times in the Bible. Did he turn from his sins and stop sinning? No, because God can’t sin.
We are all sinners before and after we’re saved. As long as we’re in this skin we will sin. That’s why the Bible says we must get sinless glorified bodies before entering heaven, so we can finally be sinless like Jesus.
Lastly, know what the Bible says about how to be saved, and why it’s so dangerous to repent of your sins rather than resting in the finished work of Jesus.
Belief alone in Jesus alone is what saves you, and it says that nearly 100 times in the New Testament. Nothing you can do saves you. If you could “repent of your sins” and stop sinning, would it be necessary for Jesus to die for you? And you certainly don’t want to be adding to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Here’s why…
    Galatians 1:8
“But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.”

Listen to Greg Jackson on RUclips. He goes into much more detail about the Bible’s true grace doctrine vs the false repent of your sins doctrine.
You can get saved right now by simply believing that Jesus died and rose from the grave for you, to forgive you of every sin (past, present, and future).
You don’t have to stop sinning (Jesus came to save sinners), no attending church, no getting religious, no pretending to be holier than thou. The Bible is clear. Just believe to be saved.
John 3:16 KJV: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
    Acts 16:31
And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
    John 6:47, KJV:
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believes on me hath everlasting life.
    John 3:36
“He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.”
    John 6:29
“Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the will of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.”

Please read 1 John 3:6-10. The true dangerous teaching is telling people not to repent! To say repentance is dangerous is completely unbiblical and downright evil, friend! Christ says explicitly in Mark 1:14 "The kingdom of God is near. REPENT and believe in the good news!" And in Matthew 18:6, Jesus says, "But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea." If a person truly loved Christ, and His Spirit was in them, they wouldn't /want/ to sin. God never said we wouldn't sin ever while we were in this flesh--but it would be a life-long struggle of sanctification until the final day where God glorifies us with Christ and completely frees us from these bodies. If you're willingly revelling in sin, enjoying in sin and justifying sin with full knowledge that it is sin--how can God be in you, and how can you profess to the faith when Scripture tells us that we should rather want to have our eyes gauged out and hands cut off than to sin? James 2:18 "So too, faith by itself, it does not result in action is DEAD. But someone will say 'You have faith and I have deeds.' Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds." Beloved, I too struggle to live a life free of sin, it brings me shame and hurt and spiritual struggle everyday, but the spirit of Christ is meant to lead us into repentance and holiness. Romans 2:4-5 "Or do you disregard the riches of His kindness, tolerance and patience, not realizing that God's kindness leads you to repentance? But because if your hard and UNREPENTANT heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of wrath, when God's righteous judgement will be revealed." And it is possible! Because Christ's work on the cross is meant to give us His Spirit which enables us to flee from sin and come to God ♡ I used to be addicted to porn and masturbation--but now God has worked in me a loss of desire for any of those things, and I haven't had an episode since for a year now. Sin is bondage, friend. Come to Christ, and I can promise you He will show you what true life, true joy, true pleasure, true satisfaction, true fulfillment, true rest really is! God says repentance is good news!! Believe and recieve the forgiveness of Christ--and have a life of abundance and holiness--not in the future, but now! ♡

@Marla Frange Do you ever imagine God as a ruthless, tyrannical monster who eagerly waits for us to fail so He can punish us forever in Hell? For instance, if a non-elect person came to saving faith in Christ, then God would say something like, "I want that person to backslide and go back to his sinful nature so He can end up in Hell!" Or, "I want that person to go back into doubt and trust in his own good works and self-righteousness so He can end up in Hell!"

@@sheldonwiens1314 I don't believe nor imagine God to ever be like that, and I know by His grace, that He isn't eagerly awaiting the eternal suffering of anyone. He openly grieves it and states in 1 Timothy 2:3-4 that He desires everyone to be saved. However, He in His wisdom knows that the goodest possible outcome in which He alone is glorified is not for all to be chosen. This is a Calvinist doctrine, I think, based on Scripture. I know this may sound terrifying and the Spirit did a lot in me to help me truly accept this, but if anything, we are creatures that, due to the fall and our bondage to sin, deserve hell. The heart is deceitfully wicked, who can understand it but God? Jeremiah 17:9 But repentance isn't "relying solely on one's own righteousness" Repentance simply means to turn from one's way, like turning over a new leaf ♡ When we recieve Christ, He empowers us to live holy lives and turn from our old lives of sin into lives of freedom in which God is glorified.

John needs a better translator. The translation is the foundation of interpretation.
0:29 Jesus never spoke of hell he warned the Pharisees about gehenna
7:48 I don't buy this argument. I never have. It's just plain sloppy and humanistic.
11:55 I never bought this argument either. It's humanistic. God is supreme but he's also not a snowflakes. There can be no "injury" to an immortal all powerful god and God is also love- more than you or I. I never said we shouldn't fear God or fear his corrective punishment (which is what kolasin in Mathew means). Make no mistake I correct those people too. Jesus said as he is lifted up he'll drag all men to him.
All these ideas and more are discoverable and testable. You have the tools. Don't skip math if you're in the sciences. Don't skip leg day if you want to be strong. Don't skip Greek and linguistic studies if you want to know the Bible, and know God. Put down your Augustine and Luther and Calvin and Zwingly for a hot second and study the actual words. We have tools they could never have dreamed of.
    God bless and keep ye
