NCC (North Central Conference) was always D-II. A conference thats part of D-II. NDSU had been in D-II since the beginning until their recent upgrade to D-IAA (FCS) around 15 yrs ago. Edit: Ah! It was called College Division. For smaller schools. I stand corrected. Yes that was back in the '60s and prior. Before the division splits.
Don't have the fan base or $. We can't even fill the Fargodome that only has a 19K capacity, let alone a stadium that holds 40, or 50K like a lot of the FBS schools have.
If that was true, he would have said something. Considering both MSU and SDSU clearly outnumbered the Bison fans during the past two trips to Frisco, there isn't much left to be said.
Bison now have 18 championships total. Only program that has that many is Yale at 18 as well. Next year all the top schools lose their QBs including NDSU. Going to be a wide open.
Since they moved to FCS they are 9-5 against FBS teams & all but one of their losses have been by less than 6 points. They can compete with FBS teams, they just don't have the fanbase or monetary power to be in FBS.
NDSU football should be FBS, the problem is a move up affects the whole athletic department not just football. Fargo is not a big market, the stadium is only 19k. So this is not a simple issue.
As a Bison fan, I am fine with being even better than the Alabama of the FCS. An FBS move would not make money, and if it doesnt make money it doesnt make cents.
North Dakota one least populated states in 50 USA states. Fargo biggest city 135000 approximately we r an FCS we don't have money to be FBS yet 9-5 all time vs FBS teams including top 10 Iowa

Not all FBS schools have 40k, 60k, etc. sized stadiums. Many have between 25k to 35k.
